Thanks for uploading such an important video ! Kinshi Tsuruta, Katuya Yokoyama and the compositions of Toru Takemistu are my favorite ! If you have more of the great Kinshi Tsuruta please share !

The score is written down as staff notation except the cadenza, which is written down as graphic notation. So there is scope for sonething new in the cadenza each time so to speak. To freely improvise would be very from the tradition both Tsuruta and Yokoyama come from. However, they probably played differently each time regarding timing, and slight changes of embellishments etc. So what they probably learned back from the record is the timing of how the cadenza was played. Live, they signal ea

Kiku, really insightful information. I had heard a rumor that the original performance was entirely improvised and was written down later. Do you know anything about that?

I was a student of Yokoyama-sensei and spent time with Tsuruta-sensei and him in NYC in 1985 when they were playing November Steps with the Netherlands Dance Theatre. The choreographer (like some below) did not realize that their parts had improvisation and had set movements in exact time to every gesture from the Denon/Phillips recording. Yokoyama and Tsuruta had to go back to their hotel rooms and learn their 'parts' off the record. These days the parts have become fixed.

Actually, the biwa and shakuhachi parts left room open for some improvisation. See the section "aleatory techniques" in the Wikipedia article for Takemitsu; the citation is from Peter Burt's "The Music of Toru Takemitsu."
