Hi use rit dye....with vinegar and salt....boiling hot water or close too..and soak the sheaths. Or buy black piping save the hassle. Ive used rit dye on nylon and plastics aswell as dying old army surplus clothing n webbing...works a treat.
If you put small fender washers on the rivets it will make it a little neater and help spread the compression forces. If you wish to make it a little fancier, use copper rivets and roves..
A self cleaning oven works by getting so hot for so long that all traces of food are consumed by the heat. This runs up your electric bill and burns up/damages your oven. Or as my sister said. "Don't do that."
Also they typically are coated in some sort of ceramic that aids the burning. Ours has side panels made of the stuff, but the bottom doesn’t so it still gets as gross as a normal oven.
In my opinion, you should do 3 thinks different. 1) make the "mouth" of the sheat wider using hot metal rod 2) Dril hole in the blade of machete where you tightened the sheat. It will fit more securely in the sheet and also you can put twig into it and use as handle when you want to use machete as a draw knife. 3) dip that beltloop into some soft glue like silicon, it wont tear or cut as easily. Then i think your sheat will be perfect. I do even like the colour, hate to search for sheat in the grass.....
Holster maker, here. Heated PVC offgasses extremly toxic chemicals. You need to heat it outside. To protect the belt loop from the blade, you can modify your pressing technique. If you add a piece of masonite the same width as the webbing offset from the widest part of the blade by a half inch or so, it will ceate a protected channel for the webbing. I would advise making a fixture for that to make it quick and repeatable. Good job, all around. Subbed. 🍺
I really enjoy make my gear too....I'm from Brazil and a have seen these machetes being used for all over the country ...the real floresta people use a lot these machetes.
Go to your local plumbing wholesaler and buy 2 1/2" SCR 26 PVC pipe. I have use it to make fishing rod cases. What you have there is a sewer pipe, used to carry waste from the house to the sewer in the street. Drain pipe is SCH #40 PVC and used inside the house.
Self cleaning ovens heat up the oven up to 600 degrees while locking the door for safty so you dont burn your face if you should open the door. The high temperater burns off any oil or moister leaving a dry charred residue that can be easily wiped up.
As Kydex holster and sometimes sheath maker with over a decade of experience I applaud your approach to using what's available. My most critical comment would be to round the 90 degree corner at the belt loop before putting in the webbing. Cheap materials certainly gives you some freedom to try new things without feeling too much pain if it doesn't work out.
Hey Jason, You should ask your dad where “Don’t put your lips on it” came from. My grandfather was essentially my dad growing up. There are so many things like that I wish I could ask him. Take advantage of every moment you have with those you love. Even the mundane things are sorely missed sometimes.
As an FYI 2” schedule 40 will fit most of the Latin made machetes to include the tramontina bolo. There is a little slack in it, but it’s more or less form it and go. On the other hand I discovered the sheaths from PVC can be a little brittle and crack when dropped. So I swapped to some old fire hose I found at work a lot less noisy in the woods and you can use the machete to cut it!
One thing you could do with the PVC is put a wrap on it before you put the rivets on. A lot of options there from sheets of self-stick vinyl to gluing cloth onto it. Check your wife's sewing stuff, maybe she's got a bolt of nice camo pattern.
Laundry detergent jugs are a good source of poor man’s kydex for smaller blades . Only downside is it can be difficult to find em in non fruity colors lol .
Good to know!!!!!! Fruity has its benefits! 😁 First thing that popped into my head was being able to find stuff in the woods! Them bright Whites, blues and reds can be beneficial!
Clamp a 16-penny nail, or similar, sandwiched at the bottom of the hot PVC. It'll hot-form into a drain hole. A PVC sheath really traps moisture. Blade rusts.
The taco style sheath naturally has a drain hole at the bottom. Since making this video I have made several improvements to the sheath design including drilling several large holes in the sides of the sheath for drainage and weight reduction. Thanks so much for the feedback!
I think a blade that length would be easier to access on your opposite side to be used as a cross draw. A hole lower on the sheath for a tie off to your leg would prevent it flopping around while you walk but I would guess most users would toss it in their pack if going any distance.
Correct. Gets up to 700-900 F for 1.5 - 3 hours. With heat up and cool down, the whole process can take 4-6 hours. Do NOT set it to self clean and leave the house. Just sayin'.
The primer plumbers and electricians use before adding glue to pvc will stain it. I know it comes in purple & im pretty sure it comes in a brownish-orange as well. It will scratch/scrape off as it rubs on stuff but that could look cool too.
Im not sure about PVC but i sanded and spray painted my cheap kayak for duck hunting years ago and its held up pretty well considering before sanding you could scratch the paint off with your finger nail
Self cleaning ovens heat up to an extremely high temperature and they basically just burn any type of Grease Etc on the walls. That's why you are not able to open the handle once you set it because it locks closed.
A self cleaning oven when set to do so cycles at full power from all internal burners getting as absolutely hot as it can for a period of time essentially baking or burning off any spills or messes inside of it.... You're welcome 😊 🙏
I assume Schedule 80 would be too thick/heavy to want to carry around, but if you can make it work for smaller knives, you could have black/grey sheaths.
I have a lot of expensive knifes, but not is more useful than one good and cheap machete! (I'm from Brazil, so Tramontina and Corneta, are awesome, and really cheap !)
Very difficult to find a thin walled pipe of a smaller size. I searched far and wide. Schedule 40 pvc comes in a huge variety of sizes but is too heavy for such a large sheath. The 4 inch drain pipe was the best I could do.
Quite an informative video-I think it could be improved vastly, but the biggest mistake is putting the machete frog hanger where you draw the knife out!! Surely, you should put it on the opposite side as it will hang better, and not affect anything else you draw this knife
you asked about changing the color of that sheath ...people have been dyeing ar mags with liquid rit clothing dye and they look good not sure if you can do the same with pvc but it would be good to check out even do a future video about it if it works well
pvc is very economical and the versatility is crazy can do most any thing . I am building a gravel bar cart with the grey heavy, a motorized one about 10 feet long, haul my eqipment on a gravel bar . . very tough . I use cheaper white for my sheaths . Awesome channel .
self cleaning ovens clean by getting hot enough to burn all the crud off the oven surfaces, they have locks on them because at the high temps , if you opened the door , it would explode in your face
Anybody know? Can you find thin wall in black? Regular DWV ABS pipe is too thick for sheaths. You can turn the white PVC brown with a torch, if you can be careful, I can't do it. There is gray PVC for conduit. Again gaining a lot of weight and thickness. I don't see the 125psi PVC available anymore, the drain pipe you use is the only material at a (Lowe's etc.) that I'm aware of. I want to try using black poly pipe if I can fid any. Everything is so different than I remember in the 70s, now that I'm nearing 70. Oye vey.
I know the cleaner for pvc will stain it… I wonder if you could add dye or possibly wood ash or some natural that would mix in with the cleaner and then stain it that way
if you get the correct size, you dont need to do majority of the work in this video I made a pvc sheath for a tramontina bush knife machete afew years ago, and it is literally just a flattened pvc pipe with a widened mouth and thumb ramp that I just hand formed while hot, they I just wrapped some paracord around it and used that to form a belt loop all up it took about 5 minutes and is a good snug fit with next to no extra width on it even though I did no trimming (other than length)
@ONThree im not certain of the thickness I used as it was afew years ago, but thicker pipe should still be totally fine It may be abit heavier, but you end up with a much nicer end product with less work, it will be stiffer and more durable while also eliminating entire steps from the process and the potential edge damage and snagging from the rivets
