Heck I live in a city in the Balkans of ~100k ppl and we have 3 major ethnicities. And you could not tell them apart just by looking at them.

You're absolutely right to not trust big tech and big ai, OpenAi being one of the worst. Not because of fears of 'Skynet'. Rather, due to their connections in Silicon valley and political influence appended with a psychotic obsession with control of not just the market, but of information as well.
I work in the industry, you don't need to fear skynet. I will try to explain this as best I can, but the topic is difficult because the terminology in ML is like a never-ending nesting doll of paragraph long explanations.
That being said, the type of neural networks popular right now are transformer based large language models (LLMs). Specifically multi-head transformers. The latest OAI model making it's rounds in the media is a multimodal large language model (MLLM), but it's still a transformer. Multimodal just meaning it can accept multiple modalities as a feature (input). Such as text, image, audio, ect..
Now, here's the thing with transformers. They have a fundamental limitation that cannot be solved without nullifying the mechanism that makes these models so popular. I will spare you the details, but in short it has to do with quadratic scaling, which leads to a context limit. In other words, their long term memory sucks. And because of an Integral function called the softmax - the issue cannot be solved algebraically. Solving the issue would mean making the attention mechanism linear. And linear attention is terrible for LLMs.
Companies like OAI, Google, e.t. al. Are brute forcing the issue by dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into training larger and larger models.
Eventually, the cure of dimensionality will creep in and the cost of compute will exceed what is possible, or feasible.
Bare in mind, given the cloud nature of these APIs and services, the companies have to run the inference of these models as well. At some point, a model will be too big to justify inference.
In such a case, you can expect banks and investors to start pulling out, bursting the bubble.

All of a sudden AM, with his miles of printed circuits, seems less fantastical, which is more than a little nerve-wracking. We'll deserve it though, AI should be at best a neat novelty or a genuine supplement to human interaction, but it's being used by people incapable or unwilling to seek what they're looking for on their own initiative or through other human beings. When people can no longer trust each other, trust each others' motives, are afraid of being authentic and genuine because of IRL backlash or cyber-repercussions the AI will be the only form of catharsis an individual can experience, which of course will be for most people just a smokescreen with corpos on the other end, but people won't care, because it'll be safer in an immediate sense.
RIP civilization, it's been a wild ride
TLDR: limited capability of the models & the processing overhead needed.

@@Coconut-219 adding on to the last thing you said, people don’t realize how much manpower these giant tech corporations are pouring into manually correcting edge cases and putting guard rails around everything. Every time one of their chatbots outputs something “problematic” and it gets amplified by “journalists” whining about it on Twitter, they go into full panic mode. It’s a never-ending game of whack-a-mole that’s diverting time and resources away from the core product in an attempt to placate people who will never and can never be placated.

Honestly this is the most exciting development in AI i have seen in a long while but only if it actually works the way its demonstrated in these videos. Also if you think about it, it will only take away jobs from people you dislike. You know what kind of jobs it wont take away? Manual labour, not anytime soon atleast, robotics aren't nearly as impressiv and wont be for many years. My main problem and fear with AI isn't what it can do or will be capable of even with highly advanced robotics, but WHO controls it and WHAT their intent is. AI needs to run on local hardware and be completely decentralized.

Regarding the pride-themed droid figure, that's part of the Disney park's exclusive droid factory line. The premise is, at the parks or some other Disney stores, you can find the droid factory kiosk where you can make a little 1/18 scale droid figure (either an astromech or a protocol droid). A few years ago, they started doing Christmas and Halloween themed limited edition droid factory figures, which inevitably lead to pride month figures. I think this is the 4th one they've done and they're all equally as cringey. I used to be religious about collecting the Halloween and Christmas ones (except when they were BB droids from the awful Disney sequels) but after George Lucas' comments a few weeks ago, I'm just done with Star Wars altogether.
I find it ironic how people have been begging for a ninja/samurai themed Assassin's Creed game pretty much since the franchise started and Ubisoft explicitly said "no! We're not doing that ever!" but now they're doing it and they make the samurai black. I guess it's just another modern day thing that misses the mark, like everything else being made just about.

The only use I could see for AI in social media would be for the likes of that Thomas Mahler post where ad hominem responses could be auto filtered out, as in, make a reasoned response or auto blocked. Some could say that it could be used against us, but if you are making reasoned arguments and not name calling, it should be a means to prevent blocking and shatter echo chamber bubbles on both sides in favour of actual debate and not name calling and virtue signalling.

When Nobunaga died, he was spared because the Japanese thought he was dumb like an animal and not worth killing so they sent him back to the Portuguese.
The game is more than likely going to overstate Yasuke's importance and pretend he was an influential member of Nobunaga's court.

They are getting kind of annoying. Personally I’m not talking specifically about the podcast as a whole, tho they did come up in that circle, and they are slowly becoming like G & G where the criticisms are mostly valid but it’s becoming a constant complaining and bish fest. There needs to be a healthy mix, which I thought this podcast did fairly well before. I can see their dilemma tho, and I can also see why they would feel the need to be a sort of antithesis to the people ruining the hobby. I disagree that they’re explicitly outrage farmers tho, and that due to them being a news show are forced in a way to cover some of the more sensational news. Ik what you mean tho. Also it’s not a particularly healthy approach.
