I made a top with 4 bandanas when I was your age, about a hundred years ago! I was very proud of it because it was just an idea that came to me at the time. Mine was black and white. I used to have so many design ideas when I was young! Thanks so much for this, it was fun to watch and brought many happy sewing memories! 😍🌹
I had this dress in the 70s. No sleeves. Just the bodice pieces sewn into a boat neck. And we didn’t have all the colors so the entire dress was red bandannas. I wore it to death!
Heads-up: Cotton bandannas shrink when washing! Always make sure you are washing and drying, then ironing flat your fabric before cutting out/sewing. Same when buying something new and altering, wash and dry it first, then hem/alter
My mind is racing. I have an extensive women's hankie collection. Since they are smaller it might be helpful to petite this idea. YES to pockets! Great project. Thanks.
@@MaddieLynn thanks. I have an adult daughter with Down's syndrome. She would wear this dress proudly with her purple cowgirl boots, and totally rock it, I might add. But she is 4' 10". I would have to make it petite like I do all her clothes. I liked your idea of just fabric squares. I wonder if there are kid sized bandanas out there. Or.....I could just use the printed center portions, that would work 😉
I had a similar dress in the early 70s that I made. I had completely forgotten about it until I saw this video! I want to make one now! Visions of triangles (hankies/scarves sliced in half diagonally) are calling my creative brain forth... so I'll need to make 2, at least, now. 😁 I'm glad you have all those hankies to create something new! I cant wait to see what you make!
Great dress and idea Madison. Appreciate the work that went into this video! A little tip, if you turn up the tension on your machine when doing the gathering stitches it will also gather for you. I hate that job so always thankful for that hack! Nice memory using your grandfather’s bandanas too ❤️
@@MaddieLynn Just do a test piece now and the skill will be in the back of your mind whenever you need it. Gonna try it, myself. Test pieces are the best.
Oh my gosh this is so immensely lovely. I have never actually done a copy of a dress, but I just might for this. Goodness! Now I just need to actually find some of these bandanas....
Nicely done and the alterations of pockets, ties, raising the shoulder, shortening the bodice and hemming were the most helpful part. Will spend the better part of the next few weekends trying to recreate in a plus size. Possibly as a peasant top. 💜
I know this project is already easy but the way you show the steps and explain it makes it even easier to understand which I appreciate since I'm a newbie on the sewing world, I will be definitely trying this project, thanks so much for the video!
OMG it's my lucky day!!!! I have had this dress idea saved since last summer. I bought a couple of packages of bandanas and that's as far as I got. Now with our constant heat wave I definitely need to make this now. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
@@MaddieLynn I finished it. Just an FYI....I'm slightly larger in the bust than you so I took a 17th bandana and split in half to add at the sides. I think I'm going to make a casing inside and add some elastic. I've already caught myself on things with the ties. Other than that it was a fast, fun make and I get lots of compliments. Now to make a top with the leftover bandanas.
The shape is very like an Afghani dress that I have. Can see using a panel of embroidery for the bodice and squares of solid colors for the rest. I would definitely put gussets in the underarms.
You have inspired me in so many ways with this video. You have no idea. I'd never heard of Psychic Outlaw, but thanks to you, their way of fashion making is now on my radar. Thanks so much! ♥
Oohhh, doilies would be so pretty! Oh gosh, it’s been a few years since I made this dress, can’t remeber the specific elastic length, but I kind of just stretched elastic over my shoulder and cut it
I love this idea, and I don't do tiktok or any of the other things, so I haven't seen this dress before. I think I would like to do English peasant smocking, maybe all in white for the front bodice square, and all in black for the back bodice square, to allow the dress to be pulled on but be more self-fitting. Also, I'm envisioning this would take inches off of those two pieces, allowing the arm bandanas to meet evenly with those pieces, instead of jutting into the bodice. I don't know if it would turn out that way in real life, but it would appeal to my Mr. Monk pleasure in symmetry. At the bottom, I miss the tidy pattern ending of the bandanas. Maybe I would buy smaller bandanas for that final layer and forego the final band of bandanas matching the seams of the upper skirt layer. Or, if going with the two matching rows of bandana sizes, laying it out with the bottom of the bandana pattern being preserved at the bottom of the dress and taking out any overage where the two skirt rows meet up with seams. And maybe laying in some black embroidery between the two rows if that would add interest while distracting from the missing bandana pattern. Or, third possibility, just let the dress be as long as it wants to be. I think this is the kind of dress that expresses opinions about itself as you go. lol
Okay, that sounds so fun!! You have to send me a picture of you make your own version! I also made a different style of Bandana dress a few weeks ago and it’s a new video on my Chanel
I've gotten into sewing from watching your creations. I've only gotten remnants so far to practice stitches and get to know my machine BUT I'm really excited to get better. Love your videos! :-)

hi inlove your idea. i see your instagr. and its amazing do you have hiw to make blue dress i love the sleeves its like 3 part with rubber i think but not sure. you dress convers with. thank you
Two suggestions. First, sew 2 lines of stitches on the pockets to make sure they don't get a hole with use. Second, I would cut the skirt at the waist rather than the hem so the full bandanaa are on the bottom.
I have been hoarding bandanas to make this exact dress! Delighted with your video, now a subscriber! *question did you use 100% cotton bandanas and did you wash them first?
super cute ! that's way too much colorful for me, but as I have some dark squares I made from scraps and didn't want to make a quilt, I may try this kind of dress ! so thank you for this video !
The gather is for the waistband so it would be hard to do elastic…I would encourage you to find a RUclips video about design a gathered waist to a bodice and see if that helps :)

Very cute dress. It reminds me of 1970's fashions made from bandanas.
It’s is definitely giving off 70’s vibes!

I love the idea new inspiration for my next video.. beautiful tutorial you did a great job to deliver the idea 🤎
Yay!!
Would the dress be too short if I only do one row of bandanas for the skirt?
Depends how long/short you like your skirts? I’ve seen it with one row and it was a cute mini dress
Wow! Would this be good for Fall weather? Your tutorial was so easy to understand, you have inspired me to give it a try!😄😄😄
Also, were your bandannas cotton or polyester?
I fully believe anything is good for fall weather, just mix and layer it with cardigans or wear it over another shirt.
Cotton
Do they make smaller bandana that I could use for kids
I don’t think so, but just use less bandanas
What a CUTE dress!!!! Going out to buy bandanas now... 😁❤️
YES!!! Do it, it’s such a fun project!
Did you ultimately like the elastic on the shoulder section?
I kind of did because it made it not look so flat…but if the bandanas proportionally weren’t some big on me I would have like to not use it
Very cute
I really love your dress. Ithink I will try and make one
You totally should!
What type of pen are you using for marking. Kinda looks like a ballpoint. Be nice to have one that I don't have to keep replacing the cap.
It’s linked in my supply list, so it’s the pilot frixion erasable pen that can be used on fabric because it disappears when heat is applied to it!
I love it . Great idea ❤️
I love it.
I will be creating one soon.
Yay!! Can’t wait to see it
This hair color is so cute too!!!! What color is this?
