- When hunting out West, weather can vary dramatically and a layering system is needed to remain comfortable during all conditions. Steve walks through the basics of a layering system for elk hunting. Steve was fortunate to win a category in the Kuiu Film Festival to acquire his system but we want to emphasize that brand does not matter but rather having a system that works well is the most important. All the brands like Kuiu, Sitka and First Lite have quality gear but you can get less expensive gear that will do the job especially when you are starting out. Our best advise is to go on a hunt and get experience! You will quickly learn what you like and what you don't like after that. Good luck!

I have Kuiu Yukon rain gear that works well. I would recommend the jacket as an outer layer.

Such a great explanation and demo. Well done.
Interesting video! As an eastern hunter our basics are base later, then fleece and then soft shell. Tend to shy away from other options because these are tough and warm but I can see your system is way lighter, probably allows for more temp regulation.
Great info for any hunter! Finding the right system is important for a comfortable hunt!
Thank you!
The best video yet to what to wear. Thank you
I don't know about that but I appreciate the feedback and for watching our channel!
Excellent presentation about the principles of layering and moisture reduction/ management.Starting out feeling a bit cold is a very good tip indeed.I appreciate your recommendation to use whatever clothing works for you.Cheers from Australia.Rob.
Good info and appreciate the honesty about matching or super expensive gear. Nice, not a necessity.
Thanks for the kind words!
Great info. I just switched away from using a Guide jacket with a rain coat and instead am going solely with the Yukon for a hard shell. I can't wait to try it out this season!
I think you will love it! It might be too warm for early season but I've really enjoyed it. It's tough.
Thanks for watching btw!
Great video! Thanks for the info!
Chuck & Angela Nelson thank you! I really appreciate the feedback. Getting excited for September. Good luck this Fall!
The breakdown in the video and comments have been what I have been looking for.
Shane Sawyer glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
I like that you say , don’t get caught up with matching camo.
So ready for elk season!
Jeff Bynum seems like forever from now. Can’t wait for September!

Awesome! AZ is on the list to experience one day. Are you located in NE? Might be moving to Omaha.
The Heart of Hunting yes I’ve lived in Nebraska all my life, and I currently live in Omaha.
Great information! Thanks for sharing.
Can you put links to the specific gear you show in the video please!!
That insulation layer is LOUD!!!! 👀
Saw your video post in the sales group on Facebook. After watching this you got me as a subscriber. Really well done. I like that you intro isn’t the typical cheesy hunting themed you usually see. Just something I noticed as being original and unique. 👍🏼
Logan Bagley thank you!! We try to keep it classy. I’m glad you liked it. Excited to release all the hunts this year!
The Heart of Hunting and I’ll be here for the virtual ride. 👍🏼

Gottschling555 thank you! We appreciate the support.
What size is your Yukon rain jacket? Do you find they run large or small?
They run small if anything. Kuiu generally runs small. I have a Large and it fits perfectly. I'm 5'11" and 165lbs.
Great info! Do you use all layers with the same sizes or do you go up in sizes?
All the same sizes.
So do you use the down pants over or under the attack pants? Or does it depend on conditions?
Just depends, if I'm glassing them over but moving around at all then under.
👍
Step one: be willing to spend a grand on some clothing 😂
Lol. That's not true! Lots of used outdoor gear and you don't have to get camo for a lot of these items.
the items he showed us in the video collectively costs more than $1000
There's a million an one options and can easily confuse a beginner
! Puffy jackets are loud!
We don't hunt in our puffy unless our outer layer is over it which reduces the noise.
Lol I’ve been in on over 13 elk kills now . From hot weather to cold . Don’t need to complicate things with all this stuff or spend a fortune on clothes .
