- Stan Lane, a master Typesetter and Printer, talked to us about the process of printing our Letterpress Shakespeare series.
Lane has been setting type for The Folio Society for 25 years and is one of the few craftsmen still skilled in the fine art of letterpress printing. Although labour-intensive, letterpress has a depth and elegance that modern printing cannot replicate.

My hat’s off to you sir! I too am a master letterpressman. I started when I was 12 years old, taught by my father who was one of the best. Your work is truly beautiful. I wish I could see it one day.

It's funny that he looks like Stan Lee. It's also funny that his name is Stan Lane.
Does Folio even do Letterpress books now?
Yes, we still use letterpress printing! We have only a single Letterpress Shakespeare edition remaining (Othello) but we do have stunning edition of Sappho's poetry printed letterpress. Letterpress printing usually features in some way in many of our limited editions as well.
