Letterpress printing Howard’s favorite cut with a 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon style jobbing press

  • We do not post videos often with our 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon-style jobbing press, but when we do film, sometimes it can be an undertaking (especially when an exhibit is being built on the third floor of our museum). For this press run, Howard is using black rubber base ink to print a large photo engraving of himself and his favorite letterpress saying, “Mind your p’s & q’s.”
In this video, Howard shows inking of the press, building the form, and printing a few impressions. Sixty copies were printed in this press run. These autographed prints are now available in our museum store and website.
For those wondering, this is the standard way to apply ink to make sure an even layer of ink is on the ink disk and rollers. Once an even layer is established, then the form is placed on the bed of the printing press and printing can commence. We wish we could have filmed more of the printing but this print is a little too large to print the standard way while foot treadling the press.

What a wonderful window into history! The sounds of the machines and the old wood building just transport us to an age where life was a little less hectic and a tad more human scale.
! Hearing your descriptions of the pieces and the process...proper pronunciations of the pieces...stories etc also greatly appreciated.
Reminds me of being a kid and visiting Sutter's Fort, Gibson Ranch, and Old Town Sac and imagining what life was like back in the Gold Rush days.
    Cheers! 🎉Grateful for the memories

Because all the machines that already broke are long gone. You only see the ones that survived :) (survivorship bias). However, it's also the materials. Can you imagine this machine surviving if it's made of plastic? There is no reason to make things to last nowadays for most companies. Unless you follow the minimalist/zero waste movement - some companies start changing practices from pressures of the consumer.

I carve the fate of nations as they fade or grow. I sow the seed of factions as they come and go. I scatter deeds of kindness that future man may know, as through life he passes, to reap as he may sow. I paint a silver lining on clouds that come and go, cheer the mind when pining, and make the heart to go. I hold the key to knowledge, it's doors to open wide to those who gain the entrance and press their way inside. Job #12 - Mr. Houston's graphic arts class 1972
