The fact that you noted that Buddy was doing "incredible" things but was so filled with hate that he never did anything good with it was a point i never realized before. He already was capable of becoming a super hero... but he never realized it for himself.
Bob created his own villain by being too arrogant.
Buddy was guided in the wrong direction, I guess the saying is true, ''never meet your heroes''
I feel like in a different life buddy directed all that hate towards trying to be a better hero than bob was the legitimate way. I'd imagine it could be a cool set up for a what if movie where bob realizes buddy's potential but is constantly pushed away by buddy the same way he pushed him away.
@@luf4rall
Buddy was kid who didn't understand that life (in the Incredibles universe, like in real life) is too flicking dangerous for an adult to bring kids into violent real-world situations.
The encounter with Bomb Voyage showed that graphically, but Buddy was too emotionally immature to understand.
Bob being a little nicer wouldn't have changed that reality.
In case you didn't know, there's a short called "Jack Jack Attacks" that tells how Kari (the babysitter) sees that Jack Jack has powers.
Kari actually has superpowers of her own, because she really does handle everything that Jack Jack dishes out.
The best part of the short is when Syndrome says that the "S" on his suit stands for "Sitter".
this should be watched before the second film, because they kind of seamlessly connect together
I was just going to share this as well. It is hilarious.
Best babysitter in the world.
Bob's depression is due to repression, not ordinary circumstances beyond his control. It's like someone with a 200 IQ being forced to act like they had a 100 IQ. So many limits compared to what they can do which is different than if he'd had brain trauma and now had the same change but the limit was now about what they were unable to do. It's so much easier to be accepting in the latter than the former, though depression is a likely visitor to both. It's like what Peter Parker told Tony Stark: "When you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you." That's a hard thing to put a big smile on.
Agreed, he wasn't depressed because he didn't realise what he had, he was depressed because despite all he had, he couldn't be himself.
yeah, it's depression from living an inauthentic life for so long - knowing you have this gift, feeling overwhelming urge to use it for the good of all, and being told "better lock that away because it makes others look bad and uncomfortable"
🍨🍌🍨🍌
Damn…guess i figured out my depression
In a phrase, job dissatisfaction.
22:15 _"Vi!_ You have to put a _force field_ _around_ the _plane!"_
It's true, Violet _has_ this ability, but as of _this_ point, she has spent the whole of her life _hiding_ it. There's no chance in _hell_ she can be expected to generate a force field big enough to encompass the plane.
To fully enjoy the sequel, I suggest waiting 14 years.
To better enjoy the sequel, pretend it doesn't exist because it completely ruins everything built up.
It just doesn't have the same impact. The Incredibles was the first movie I ever remember watching in the cinema.
@@silencedmaxim5889 Does it? It's kinda repeatable, but it develops characters further...
@@user-xx6vy9ri8p It regresses everything back to square one and completely repeats the same story as the first but with the wahman at the helm. Hell, the best parts are when Mr. Incredible is learning how to raise his kids as a father who's only ever worked all his life.
The comic was actually really good until they erased it from continuity
Funny how there was a scene with “this message will self-destruct”, when Brad Bird would later direct one of the Mission Impossible films (based on the TV show, which made that phrase iconic.)
Yep, Ghost Protocol. She has yet to see the mission impossible movies as well. All 6 of them!
Fallout is undeniably the best film in the franchise
That phrase was iconic long before Brad Bird and Tom Cruise
Funny story: when I was in college taking ASL, we had an assignment where you had to do a PowerPoint presentation on celebrities that you admired. I decided to do mine on Bird, and so I spent the whole time, silently signing my topics on his career and awards, and since he did very few live action media, I saved that to be a slide all on it's own. And when I signed about him directing ghost protocol, just for fun, I blinked a couple of times and made a "wait what" face, looking up at the screen just to check if I said that right and then back and shrugged. That was really fun. XD
Of course, most Gen-Xers will remember that quote more from _Inspector Gadget._
Take a second and think about the fact that Jack Jack has powers when he's roughly a year old. Which means supers can use their powers even when they're that young, possibly even younger since the family were convinced Jack Jack had no powers.
Now imagine Mr. and Mrs. Parr having to go through the stress of having to raise their first ever baby.... and also that baby can turn invisible.
You're welcome.
Baby crying at 3 am, but no baby in sight. Violet Parr
On another note, imagine being/handling a toddler with super strength.
Or baby who runs super fast...
My heart goes out to young Gazerbeam's parents....
@@user-xx6vy9ri8p :checks baby's heart rate: huh... it's about 1000x faster than normal today...
when I was in college there was this Mathematics professor who told me he worked at a bank as an actuary. He quit after 1 year, despite how good the pay the way. He was so bored with his job because it lacked challenge. He became a professor at a community college because he loved to see his teachings help others. This kind of reminds me of Bob's issues.
"Megamind" is another great animated film that I think you would enjoy.
Megamind is a great film.
Yes. One of the best animated movies ever. The best "superman" movie ever.
Like a bantha, yes?
Yep love Megamind
Yyeeessss
The sequel takes place seconds after this one!
Fun fact: Edna Mode was supposed to get her own voice actor. Until they found one Brad Bird himself spoke her lines as a stand-in. The recording crew was so happy with this work that they finally convinced Brad Bird to drop his search and keep on voicing her. So in essence the crew had to convince the director and producer in one person to do such an awesome impression.
Because in my book, Edna is a hidden gem of the movie, or in fact, the two movie mini-series.
Should there ever be an animated series, I do hope they still get Brad Bird as the voice actor for her.
For me the perfect representation of an intro to powers was when Dash ran from the jungle, saw the water, closed his eyes for what seemed an immediate splash down.
Then that astonished little gleeful laugh when he noticed that he is so fast he can run on water. That was AWESOME!
Granted, he wasn't the first male to voice a female character in a Pixar movie (see: Pixar employee Bob Peterson voicing Roz in the "Monsters" movies).
@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy Totally agreed. But it is fairly non-standard for the producer to voice characters, right?
@@RustyDust101 Probably. I'd heard this story before, and standard or non-standard, I'm just amused by the whole process. Brad Bird trying to find the perfect voice - and it turns out he WAS the perfect voice! And had to be convinced - because for awhile he probably had the mental block of "No no - I'm the PRODUCER and the DIRECTOR. I'm not supposed to be a VOICE!"
Man I'd love to have been a fly on the wall to listen to all the people who finally argued him around to the correct realization. :D
I've heard that it was the actress he chose for Edna. He wasn't satisfied with what she did, and tried to show her exactly what he wanted. And after he did it a few times, she told him that he would do a better job than she ever could.
Violet jumped in front of Dash so he wouldn’t get shot not knowing she could put a force field around them both 🥺
20:13 In the American release, each superhero that was killed by one of Syndrome's robots has the word "Terminated" show up in front of them instead of the red diagonal line. Honestly, I think the word "Terminated" adds so much to the scene because that word comes across as cold and unfeeling - like Syndrome viewed them as little more than test subjects in a trial.
Did you know their names have multiple meanings?
Mr Incredible - The Man of the house, and incredible super strength.
Elastigirl - Susan is always there when the kids needs her as a mom.
Violet - She’s has ultraviolet rays that are purple (violet) and allow for force fields and to turn herself invisible (which is apart of her stage of life as a teenager).
Dash - He’s a speedster and at the point of his life where your an energetic kid.
Jack Jack - He’s a baby (they do things when you least expect) and Jack of all trades (goes along with being a baby) for superpowers.
Syndrome - He’s wanted to be a hero so bad that he has hero syndrome (where you create bad situations and stop them yourself to get admiration).
Elastigirl's name is Helen though, not Susan.
The tape showed that Dash was running super fast. There's a tiny blur that happens in the back of the room. I'm surprised that you didn't see it.
Holly Hunter (Helen) took some lessons on piloting, so the lingo she used was accurate; it wasn't written in the script, but they were impressed, so they kept it, and animated it.
Those two old men on the bench -- "That's old school." -- were two of the original animators who had worked for Walt Disney, WAY back in the day. Shortly after the film was released, one of them had passed away.
Holly Hunter's work really elevated that scene on the plane. It's super tense!
It WAS written in the script, but she insisted that EVERY word is explained to her.
Love this movie. It still absolutely holds up 18 years later. I love the whole 60's aesthetic, and I love how the entire thing just feels like a slick mash-up of James Bond and Marvel's Fantastic Four. And the music in this movie is just....phenomenal. ;) Also there is kind of a shocking amount of death in this Pixar kids' movie. :P Exploding henchman, people being violently sucked into jet engines, and random bystanders getting crushed. Not that I'm complaining, it's just kind of surprising! :P
Also, you should watch the next one. It's definitely not as good as the first one, but that is a very high bar to clear, and it's still quite good. Plus, Bob Odenkirk is in it and I am destined to love anything he's in. ;) It's a very underrated movie, IMO
Have you seen Nobody yet? Easily my favorite Odenkirk project so far.
The Incredibles is the best Fantastic Four movie to date…
and the under miner is the mole man in the ff comics
@@upspaul7778 I'm actually embarrassed after all these years, I never realized The Underminer was based off Mole Man
And the best watchman movie
I like how each of their powers is a reflection of who they are in the family: Bob the dad is the strong protector, Helen the mom needs to stretch and assume multiple roles for everyone’s needs, Violet is the typical shy teen- turns invisible and creates force fields to keep people out. Dash the hyper little kid has super speed, and Jack-Jack the baby is pure potential who can become anything
They're basically the Fantastic Four. Bob is the Thing/Ben Grimm, Helen is Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Violet is Sue Richards/Invisible Woman and Dash is Johnny Storm/Human Torch. They just swapped fire powers for superspeed because keeping the elemental theme entirely would be a potential copyright suit.
@@flatebo1hmmmmmmm nah
@@maykonbrasileiro761 Three of the four characters are direct analogues of the Fantastic Four. Both sets of characters are a family. The similarities are obvious. Copyright law requires a certain degree of alteration from an existing product in order for the new work to be considered original rather than a ripoff. One way to do that would be to break the elemental theme of the FF.
@@flatebo1 1: the incredibles is a group of five people
The fantastic four
2: actualy only 1 characther has the same power as the other
That being Violet and Sue
Bob has super phisicality, the thing has super streght and durability
Helen can strecht her body, Reed richards can shapeshift
@@maykonbrasileiro761 Aaaand...you are wrong.
Each group has 4 members.
Bob has superstrength and durability. As does the Thing. Both are the tank of the group.
Helen and Reed have elasticity powers.
Violet and Sue have invisibility/force fields.
Only Dash/Johnny have obviously dissimilar powers. And even then, both are impulsive, i.e. hotheads. So they have somewhat similar personalities.
Jack-Jack is similar to Franklin. He's there in the background but, being a small child, isn't normally part of the group.
Yes, there are slight differences between Sue/Violet or Helen/Reed. So what? They're different takes on the same basic concept. And that's the point. They are the same basic concept. Everything else is just window dressing.
The Latin Spanish dub is iconic. It had two different versions. One used a lot of Mexican slang, and the other didn't use as much but had the same cast and it was used for the general public including here in the United States.
Bomb Voyage is the single greatest super hero/villain name pun
I love that you can enjoy this movie as a kid or a teen or an adult. There is something for everyone.
Awesome that you picked up on the depression that Bob was going through.
It was kind of funny how the character's names were puns - Dash runs fast, Violet is a shrinking violet, Jack is a jack of all trades, etc...
The depression take about Bob is the first time I have ever read that and I think it is a great insight. This movie also pays great homages to the early James Bond movies.
If you listen to the soundtrack carefully, it's easy to spot the Bond parallels.
The trailer actually borrowed music from Bond. On Her Majesty's Secret Service in particular. I think they really wanted long time Bond composer John Barry to do the music, but he wasn't coming out of retirement. Michael Giaccino did an excellent homage, though.
I also think some of the score is reminiscent of Henry Mancini, creator of, among other things, the Pink Panther theme.
27:49- i tink that line has a double meaning. he says no one will be super but also that he knows nations will buy his technology to make super soldiers to fight against each other and destroy themselves in the process. he know that will happen and he doesnt care as long as he gets what he wants
That's not his point. His point is to not only destroy (i.e. kill) all super heroes but to make them normal by making everyone be super - which would then become the new normal.
Note that Syndrome's punchline for his master plan is almost word for word the same as the exchange between Dash and Helen Parr: "Everyone's special, Dash." / "Which is another way of saying that nobody is."
Another great reaction, love The Incredibles! As an animator, I can tell you that there’s a difference between cartoon characters and animated characters. Cartoon characters are like Tom & Jerry: they don’t die and their sole purpose is to make you laugh. Animated characters are treated more like real, well rounded people who we care more for if they get hurt, and they have the ability to make us cry.
For these type of movies, you can refer to them as animated movies, animated characters or animations.
Or "Anime" if it's done in Japan - and then ALL bets are off and in the more serious productions, almost NO ONE has "plot armor".
3:05 Duaffy sees Mr Incredible move a 1,000+ pound tree around like it was a roll of wrapper paper.
4:05 “Mr Incredible doesn’t have any powers.” 🤔
The director, Brad Bird, also voices Edna! 👓
Suggestion: Do a reaction to "Incredibles 1.5" (aka, the short subject called "Jack Jack Attack") in which the mystery behind Kari's increasingly frantic phone messages to Mrs. Parr is finally laid bare. I suspect you will love it every bit as much as the feature.
22:00 Hi Duaffy, there is a hilarious short video on RUclips that shows what happens at home with the babysitter, it's called Jack Jack Attack 😘
Duaffy this may be one of your most heartfelt videos. I loved it!!
I remember this being one of my favorite movies when i was a kid, i even bought the soundtrack, but it was a long time no see the movie and now i noticed sine things:
-Watching this movie as an adult really hits different, there is so much you miss as a kid, being a "kid's" movie doesn't mean there is no place for some adult issues
-The plot about the heroes retirement is very similar to Marvel's Civil War comics
-Duaffy is a very beautiful human being you can learn and identify so much with her
Thanks for being honest about depression. Can I recommend "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1998) It is a combination or real human actors and animated characters interacting with each other. The animated characters are hand painted (one of the last). It has a happy ending.
Hey Duaffy, I wish you good health both physically and mentally. This was a great reaction and I loved the anecdote about your grand dad and your searching for the word “drum”! Lol. Many thanks
It’s been nearly a month since you reacted to a film I was interested in and this is a great one. Hard to believe it came out 17 years ago.
You forgot the bonus clip at the end ….. Jack jacks baby sitter (phone call explained)
Duaffy, you are a really good person. Seeing the lesson of depression is something that is missed by so many people as it's just so relatable as personal depression is so common that it's become background noise. As for using your grandpas' tummy as a drum, my niece, when she was really little, used to do that to me. Now, she's 34 and her kid does that to me. Funny how her daughter can only go to sleep on my chest when they're over... Just like her mother used to do. My wife jokes that I'm the house bed as when the cat isn't using me as a taxi/bed a visiting kid is.
Those techniques might help for some forms of mild depression but it is more complicated than that for more severe types that have a chemical component since none of methods will make any difference until the neurotransmitters and hormones are brought back into balance
Hahaha, great story.
Watch the short "Jack Jack Attacks" next, then "Incredibles 2" , and finally the short "Auntie Edna". Then you will have seen all of it in order.
You ought to also watch The Iron Giant, from the same director as this movie. It's also a masterpiece.
The Greatest Superman story ever told, where Superman never makes an appearance or is even in-universe.
As time goes by, terminology also changes. These films are not cartoons per se, but rather animated features (or animations). It's like when my female friends refer to my 'action figures' as "toys". It sends a shiver down my spine. 😂 I'm glad you enjoyed the Incredibles. Jack-Jack plays a longer part in the sequel and it's just as qood as this feature.
Well, sorry to say this but yes they are toys. Cool and very collectable toys just like barbies, hot wheels and pogs. So what, own it.
You're almost right except that your female friends would probably call your action figures as "dolls" .😁
@@haroldcruz8550lol no. They’re toys. Little girls might call them dolls but not grown women.
Edna had a point with all the examples that she cited because NO CAPES would be best for them, but that doesn't apply to people like Superman since they are invulnerable and wouldn't face the problems that the others did
Even to Batman it doesn't apply
He has contingecy plans for capes😂😂

I don't know what Helen's problem was with the girl babysitting-She took a whole bunch of child care and CPR courses to prepare for this job and is probably more experienced than some 'adult sitters'
It was just the first time for her to leave him with another person.
However, there's also a short movie showing the babysitter's experience on that session.
Let's just say the finale wasn't the first moment he developed his abilities…
Because when you have a baby and you leave it with someone for the first time you naturally worry
well, powers tend to manifest under moments of high stress, so the baby being around someone unfamiliar with no one else in sight is an understandably worrisome risk
BPD. That’s why.
Um. Well. Considering what happened during the gig and with syndrome, can you really blame her? I think, despite the panic, Carie actually handled Jack Jack pretty well. It was just the handing him off to an adult she doesn’t know and didn’t confirm he was actually sent by the Parrs.
This film was released with the short "jack-jack-attack" I think it was called.. and its just the entire time the baby sitter spends with Jack Jack.. And no one reacts to it even though it released with the film
In 8th grade, my Spanish teacher put on this film in Spanish because someone told her she looked like Edna Mode (which she did).
This is such a great movie and it holds up very well today! I love three metaphor of the characters. Dad has to be strong no matter what, mom has stretch herself beyond imagination, the boy is super hyper, the girl is shy and wants to be invisible (and of course puts up shields), and the baby.... Well, self explanatory. Lol
Another animated movie you should look into is the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, it seems purely fantasy but there's a lot that goes into them and the characters grow throughout the movies both literally and mentally. I think you would find the trilogy really interesting both on an entertainment level and deeper level.
When you watch Incredibles 2, you need to react to the Jack Jack Attack short beforehand.
You need to react to Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and The Road to El Dorado (two dreamworks classics)! Love how you pick up on the deeper meanings to the story!
When he refers to Buddy as Brodie that’s a reference to the character played by his voice actor, Jason Lee, in the movie Mallrats
Thanks, D. Good wrap up. Peace and love to you and yours.
In the scene where Syndrome is monologing notice Bomb Voyage isn't in the flash back showing how obsessed Buddy was with being Mr. Incredible's sidekick, plus another theory is that Syndrome is the son of one of the deceased Supers
Adding to Bob's depression is the fact that while he's still doing his best to help people in his normal-job capacity, doing so gets him in trouble with his boss. It would probably help if he recognized the good he's doing but, as you said, he's so fixated on what he can't do that he's losing sight of what he can - and has - done.
YES this is one of my top 3 favorite animated movies
My funny little ""Incredibles" story..I went to DragonCon one year and there was a family dressed as "The Incredibles". They were all walking in the DragonCon parade outside of the hotel. All of a sudden, the young boy took off like a bullet, and he was so fast, someone a quarter block down had to catch him for the parents. Its was life imitating art!
you truly need to see the short, "JACK JACK ATTACKS" it's about what the baby sitter went through
When people say someone should make a really good Fantastic Four movie I say they already did. It was called The Incredibles. 👌😁
“What have we here? Matching uniforms? Oh, no! Elastigirl? You married Elastigirl? Whoa! AND GOT BUSY!”
That’s still funny no matter how many times I hear it. 🤣

He didn’t save his life! He ruined his death! 😜
It's Ellie from TLOU2.
Love this lady and her reactions. 2 thumbs up! Really excited for you to do the sequel. Thanks
You should really consider watching the six "mission impossible" movies if you haven't already, from 1996 to 2018, before the seventh one comes out. The Director of this film in fact made one of them :)
She should do it in her free time, if she wants to, not here.
IMO it'll be a waste of time on her channel. There are much better options for her to watch for her channel.
Duaffy, you're wonderful. Your enjoyment of the movie is excellent as always, and your understanding of depression and discussion of it was great. Love this!
A masterpiece, I enjoy it every single time, and of course your reaction and analysis!
I remember vagely that you talked about having to undergo surgery last month, and it seems like this is the first of your post-surgery videos I've watched.
I hope you'll recover soon (or already recovered through the magic of RUclips release delay) and feel much better afterwards!
Facial surgery is always scary (had to do six of them), so I'm glad to see you back doing your reactions!
Fun Fact: The GPS map in the car during the opening chase was of Emeryville, where Pixar Studios is located.
Define fun lol
I love your post-movie commentary. It's very on point.
A lot of people are in a bad place these days.
The message self-destucting is paying homage to the Mission:Impossible tv show of the 1960s.
Peter Graves's character would get his instructions via cassette tapes, which would always self-destruct a few seconds after he finished listening to them. They didn't explode, but it's hard to explain exactly how they self-destuctied.
D, if not mistaken, l saw this film first in an aeroplane somewhere between London and Johannesburg. I was in the former for a wedding of two friends l had studied with in the 90s. The ‘father’ of the bride was one of my dearest friends. He died of cancer a few years later. I have not been back to Britain since.
And thanks for picking up on the depression subtext. You are very perceptive.

It's really fun how each character's powers reflect their character archetype. Dad has to be strong for his family, Mom has to be flexible and adaptive, emo teen daughter wants to disappear and/or put up a wall around herself, little brother is just full of energy and wants to go go go, and the baby is unmoulded clay just waiting to figure out what it's going to be.

There was a 'blink and you'll miss it' moment where the call sign of the aircraft Helen was flying was "India Golf Niner Niner" (or IG99), which was a sly reference to another Brad Bird film - The Iron Giant' (1999). You might consider checking that out at some point...
I thought that was a Star Wars reference (IG-88).
I love this movie and I love your reactions! I really hope you're doing well and are happy with what you are doing. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching this film! The sequel is good, too. I would also recommend the Pixar film “Up” and of course the Toy Story series.
Just so you know the underminer is a reference to Marvel's mole man who was one of the fantastic fours first villains
Wow you're voice is so sweet ! It makes me peaceful 😌
Bomb Voyage was originally called Bomb Pérignon. But the trademark owners Moët et Chandon did not allow it.
Not only I recommand you to react to the second movie, but I'd also love if you'll react to the short movie Jack-Jack Attack, which is a DVD Bonus for the first one.
In general, Pixar are great with sequels (where Disney mostly sucks at it) Cars 2 being maybe the exception that confirms the rule (but Cars 3 rectifies that little accident).
I want a Duaffy.
Incredible reaction!
Concentration on the good is something I’ve tried to do to help with my depression. I’ve also tried doing thing I in enjoy like gaming, talking to friends, listening to music and other things. But I’m still depressed, still feel no pleasure and disinterested in things I enjoy to do. Even tried playing guitar again after weeks and still felt nothing.
As for your question about watching number two, YES.
Lol she saw him lift and swing a tree and couldn't figure out his power until he survived a huge fall.
The part where Bob figures out that and remembers The Omnidroid’s weakness is itself shows how smart Bob really is. He notices the small details for example Bomb Voyage’s bomb in the building, the bomb planted on Buddy’s cape and the mugger he saw at his job. Something a genius like Syndrome overlooked and it was even his weapon he designed himself that he didn’t bother to test its weakness (aside from using superheroes) instead of its strengths
Also, note how he knows all the loopholes in his company's insurance policies, which means he must know them inside-out.
