Dance Moms star, Kalani Hilliker, faces backlash after making jokes on a recent podcast, Sofia with a K. Kalani has a new brand called Kare and that's what she was on the podcast promoting. Since then she's posted videos with her mom Kira and her new sister, so she doesn't seem too affected by it.

Yea idk why they would say they “I love mental illness” as if its a trend… i however don’t think kalani was trying to make fun of mental illness though. I think she was feeling off the vibe the other girl was giving and trying to not make the topic as sad as it is.

True. While I do not find it funny nor a joke. I actually know what they were trying to get across. But by cutting it into one single sentence such as that was was greatly insulting to anyone whom has suffered mental illness. I think a sincere apology is in order. But I also understand what she was attempting to say. Never makes it ok though. ❤️ 😞

Exactly. I think people took this way too far. She wasn’t even the one who said she “loved” her mental illness in the first place and saying it makes her her isn’t even a bad thing. A lot of the DM cast talked about how their experiences from the show and their trauma shaped who they are today, and Kalani essentially said the same thing. Her reaction was a bit much but her original statement wasn’t bad

bc having a REAL mental illness is not smth u just go on the internet and make jokes abt like “oh yeah i’m so quirky i love my mental illness.” 🤨 like i did not go to the mental hospital for people to start joking abt that shit. it’s not funny and never will be funny bc there’s a difference between real mental illness and “seasonal depression” or anything like that.

i watched the full interview and i will say the clip was definitely taken out of context. they didnt even say this during the mental health conversation they had, this was later in the video and was definitely said in an ironic/almost sarcastic way. i dont think they meant it seriously but she should not have addressed it the way she did ..

Honestly, Kalani’s reaction was worse that what she actually said in the first place.
I don’t think she was ‘glamorizing’ mental illness, she wasn’t even the one that said she “loved” her mental illness - she just said that it made her her, which is a commonly recommended way to get stronger and build healthy steps to recovering.

I don’t think they meant it quite that way. I’m not the kind of person to wallow in my misery and my darkness all the time. I have pretty bad anxiety (not a disorder on its own, I believe it stems from one of other disorders I have), and I like to look at the positive sides. For example, I get into far less confrontations, far less misunderstandings, I’m nicer to people in general, and don’t end up in bad situations that can be avoided. And I’ll be completely honest, with the way a lot of people my age act, I am SLIGHTLY appreciate of my trauma in a weird sense. Honestly, they’re childish, dependent, spoiled, relatively unaware of the rest of the world around them. They don’t really have any perspective. My 25 year old friends have fucked issues with their car and say “eh we’ll check it out when we get back from vacation a thousand mile car drive away” and then wonder why the bill is so expensive when they get back and get the car taken care of. They spill something on the carpet and don’t clean the carpet because “well it’s already dirty now, just toss a towel on it to dry” as if mold isn’t a thing. My point is, despite the horrible downsides those things cause me, I need to appreciate the positives to cope. But I’m not going to make this big ass speech every single time. I’m going to say something significantly shorter, such as “not gonna lie, sometimes I like that I was traumatized” and if that offends people, I’m not the problem. I have adhd and bipolar, and my childhood resulted in a PTSD diagnosis. I know mental health struggles. I have scars and small bald patches on my head from bashing it against a wall and cutting it open. My arms will always be a target for peoples stares. I soaked in depression for years and missed the biggest transition point of my life. Every dream, every goal, wasted. So I learned pretty quickly that there’s no room in the world for people that sensitive. When I cared about things that small, I was miserable, because when you care about things so insignificant, you will ALWAYS. Have a problem. My mother once said you have to choose happiness, and I assumed she meant you just flick a switch and boom you’re happy. That’s ridiculous. But during an extremely low depressive episode, I just could not take it anymore. After screaming into a pillow for an hour sobbing, pleading to something to put me out of my misery, I figured if I was going to suffer I might as well do these things I saw as so useless. I decided to do things that were good for me even if they didn’t feel good immediately, even if they felt like a chore. And slowly over time I have improved. I am still a mess, but I’m not a mess that’s cutting herself or doing drugs or blacking out. I’m not trying to od anymore, I’m not behaving recklessly and putting myself in danger constantly. I have a full time job, just got employee of the month, and happiness, though not insanely frequent, is at least present. I used to be miserable every second of every day, never sober. And now I’m doing a lot better. I’ll keep getting better. And I realized that’s what my mom meant. Honestly, y’all will probably just argue with this, but that’s your issue not mine. I’m just saying what I know, and I know that you won’t survive, or survive happily, with such a sensitive self centered mindset. Not everything is about you. If you don’t like someone else’s opinion or coping mechanism of THEIR mental health, then go cry somewhere, but leave them alone. Who the hell are you to tell them how to feel about it? You guys have no idea just how controlling and toxic you really can be. If you don’t like how she talks about her mental health go watch someone that you do like. I think it’s fucked up that you guys try to uproot peoples lives over a difference. Of. Opinion. Grow the fuck up, you children.

I feel like mentally ill people have the right to talk about their own mental illness however the fuck they want. If looking on the bright side and finding “positive” aspects to her mental illness makes her feel better about her struggles than who am I to judge her? She’s not glamorizing mental illness in general she is simply talking about herself and her own experience, who am I to judge how someone else is allowed to experience and talk about their illness? If I want to romanticize my mental illness that’s my own business, nobody else gonna do it so I might as well. I’m stuck with this shit anyways, no way out, so you kind of learn to adapt and find humor and levity where you can.

She did MAKE A JOKE and would not intentionally hurt someone. Please understand she is young and we did not hear the whole story. I have MH issues AND a sense of humor. Kalani is a kind person, and this issue should be taken in context to the big picture. She said she had MH issues, panic attacks, which is a brave statement, especially a public figure. She has a platform and joking about something that is so sensitive can be very not well received. Even if she had good intentions, it didn't come out that way and she should acknowledge the harm it did while also being self aware. Mental illness is broad and not something to be taken as lightly as she portrayed it to be.
