Regarding keeping the programming cable against the radio, I'm thinkin' a good rubber band. Only thing is, I am not sure if my GMRS license allows me to operate in the rubber band.

Randy, you are truly an "influencer". After watching Parts 1,2, and 3 of your review of the Baofeng UV-9G, I went to Amazon and got one. When I got the radio, and liberated it from it's box, and assembled it, I was pleased to see that Baofeng indeed addressed the nits you picked on. Like you, I believe this radio is the best GMRS handheld on the market. I have Baofeng GT-3TP''s Baofeng C11S's and now the UV-9G. The 9G is now my favorite sexy redhead radio.

Hey Randy. Thanks for these videos. As a newbie you are helping me get up and running. Have you seen the Baofeng GMRS-9R? It is an updated version of the UV-9G. I picked one up as my first radio and I love it. It seems to address almost all of your nits (except for the aftermarket antennae I think) and it has a better battery to boot. Keep up the good work!

So I just purchased the GMRS-9R and it sounds like it is an exact duplicate of the UV-9G but they watched this video and fixed most of the issues in this video. I paid under $30 too!

    WOW !
I never expected a wah-wah video about this radio ! I purchased this radio a few days ago (arriving tomorrow) right after watching your video
and STILL looking forward to it arriving.
I have learned a lot watching your videos, one of them is I actually learned how to program the Baofeng from the screen. (Not too difficult at all)
What is very confusing as we both know, that these radios do not come pre-program with the eight repeater tones you need/ want in your area, that is very unlikely, actually impossible,
With that said no matter what the tones are set at when you recieve the radio, , you still have to go into the radio to set the in/ out tones.
As far as the narrow / wideband setting, as long as your programming the ctcss tones programming the wide/ narrow will probably take you an additional 1.5 seconds if that....
The video was a good promo for your upcoming Thursday night Net though..

Randy, I looked around and came to the same conclusion you did about the Baofeng UV-9G. I bought a pair and they have already fixed the ctcss tones, programming cable screw and chirp compatibility. I was able to use chirp to program all the uhf and vhf channels I want to scan, all the repeaters in the areas I travel around in the South West, and get all my personal preferences customized in less than an hour. I have some whip antennas coming in today. I'll let you know if they fixed that as well! Great radio, really enjoying GMRS with my family. Thanks for the good info! YES! The Nagoya antena now fits without any modification! The power button still does not change the power level. Will check for an updated firmware since Baofeng says on their website they plan to fix this for 2022. I can't wait!

The screw size is M2.5x6 Home Depot and Lowes do not carry them. I think they are the same size as the belt clip on uv-5r if/when you lose yours. You also can't save simplex in the DIY channels. Thank you for your videos!

So kind of more technical and more of a workaround, but you can manually edit the radio configuration XML file with notepad to setup the repeaters in any order you'd like. PITA, but the option does exist. I have had to do that for the UV-5X.

If you want the Antenna to fit, you gotta use some spit.... but just on the Tip.
Not sure why, but this is becoming my favorite channel... Had a HAM license for 20 years, used it for maybe the first two, renewed once and then about 7 years ago it expired. Now I have to take the test again to get my HAM license back, but bought my GMRS license today... Have no idea why as there is no one to talk to on GMRS in my area, meaning no repeaters anywhere close, and Don't have time or money to hang out with friends and Crawl anymore, because i have a three year old...Sounds like Zello is my next stop... But this channel has gotten me geeked out again about little black boxes with buttons and antenna....Keep up the great content...

I got a Ham and GMRS licensed about the same time less than a year ago and tinkering with both since there are many repeaters of both types in my area. My nit picks, I don’t like the swivel belt clip. And mine is only putting out a max of 3.6 watts on high. And for some reason, I cannot get it to receive any weather frequencies. They are pre programmed, but will barley open the squelch enough to receive. Even with squelch set to 1.

Hey hey! Regarding the # button for power mode switching, I found out that it works if you switch to frequency mode. # button does not seem to work on channel mode. I understand in the channel mode the radio automatically sets the power to the highest allowable setting in that specific channel. If you loop the channels you can see the power level changes accordingly.
So, in frequency mode you do it manually either form the menu or simply with the # button, and in channel mode it is done automatically and you are not allowed to change it. I guess they should mention this in the manual if they don't.
My device is: Baofeng GMRS-9R (would really appreciate a video review, or at least a comment about it if you have had a chance to check it out)
Thanks for great videos. I am learning a lot from you 👍

Great review! I also like this radio! I also noticed the PITA cable screw and the 771 antenna fail. Did you notice also that the CPS will NOT let you skip the NOAA stations at the bottom during scanning? i mean its not the end of the world but when i'm scanning it stops EVERY time on the same NOAA station and i have to manually skip over it to begin the scan again...to end up right back on that NOAA station.. i'm with you. Great radio BF! almost knocked it out of the park on this one. Great video. Thanks

    • @jaybarr3307
      @jaybarr3307 3 года назад

That's annoying. Truly. Definitely the biggest of the nitpick items. One of my Ham radios allows scanning of NOAA along with others but will only pause on them if NOAA is broadcasting an extreme weather alert warning on that channel. Great feature that would be great on this radio too. But, I'm with you, I do NOT want it stopping on the NOAA channels as there's three of them around me it'd stop on every time. That's a long delay between scanning even if the delay time is set low.

I may be wrong, or atleast I haven't been limited yet, but the wouxon radios don't have a limit on how many repeater channels you can program in...I have numerous repeaters programmed for various routes I've taken as well as locally... baofeng radios seem to be the limited radios. That doesn't make them bad. Maybe baofeng should add a separate screw to the programing jack. I realize that doing so may increase the price significantly, but it would make sense to ensure water resistance by avoiding loosing the one captured screw....

I check in Chirp, and I am not seeing any tones enabled. Also looks like they may have fixed the issue you brought up in this video. Not sure if I have a defective radio or something else is going on. Any help would be appreciated. New GMRS user. Going to be adding the Midland 575 to my HMMWV for trail rides and future search and rescue.

I just plugged mine into my laptop and it looks like they have changed the programming. It looks like the codes are off and it's on wide band. I belive I'm doing it right. I also look through the menu on the uv9r and it shows cods are off. That's the way it was shipped to me right out of the box. I have two of them.

I received one from Amazon. The battery won't lock onto the radio. Keeps falling off. It's happened to several owners. Kinda makes it hard to use.

I want to buy a pair of these, I'm just wondering if they've gotten thru to the next inventory stock without all the annoyances that he mentions.

Do you have the tones turned off for the non repeater channels. Keep up the great videos.

He was saying the radio inconveniently comes with tones turned on all channels. The tones are the same as the bubble pack "Privacy" codes. Use them with fellow radio friends as long as everyone uses same code. Otherwise just leave it blank, some bubble pack radios don't even have privacy tones or codes.

When connecting to repeater with this radio do you have to change both receive and transmit tones or just transmit I've tried both no luck

On any radio the TX tone is always required, the RX tone is always optional, but if you arent using the specified RX tone, make sure there is NO tone programmed.

Hey you Smarty-Pants! 08:07 Waterproofness in these Baofengs is due to not have the classic two-holes and having this flat surface for contacting pins instead! Not because of the cover of this contact surface!
10:03 Without the cover it is still waterproof!!!
Please pin me and ask for forgiveness!
PS Love your content and style but this is a very big misunderstanding which you should clarify to your mind and all your favourite loving viewers!

I have a couple UV-9G radios on order. Can you recommend a good 12v charger for them? Specifically USB? Hard to find a specific 12v charger for this particular radio and I want to charge them in my camper van
