    Hello my sweet friends. I’m sorry I’ve been away from comments for a bit but things have been a wee bit tough here. I lost my youngest sister to liver problems. She was only 45 years old. She’d struggled the last few years because she also lost her son, my eldest nephew to a ruptured stomach. It was all just a lot. Things are settling now and while my heart still aches, I know we must keep moving forward. I’m happy to see both you and Diane well. I hope you have a peaceful and happy winter. Blessings to you both and the family. ~Lisa

    Tending to my rhubarb this week. We missed the snow this week luckily. A large Colorado Low hit Saskatchewan & Manitoba today and dropped a large amount of white stuff in spots. My 2 plants produced quite well this year, hope to get more in the next few years. I look forward to viewing more of your content, thank you.

    Hi Cliff and lovely Diane this was something we were hoping to do today but we have had nothing but thunder and lightning storms since Saturday afternoon, but will be taking your instructions once we can get to it again. Keep safe Bill and val

      Hi Bill & Val we did see the thunder and lightening storms on the weather news, looked like a lot of rain. Its a good autumn job done, with plenty of material for the compost. Take care regards from us both.

    Hello Cliff and thank you for covering this subject. I grew some rhubarb from seed this year. I saved nine plants and gave some away to friends. The leaves have all flopped on the ground now and I was wondering what to do with the plants before winter. Your video answered the question perfectly. Looking forward to harvesting some rhubarb next year. All the best : )

    • @CastleHillGarden
      @CastleHillGarden  Год назад +1

      You are welcome Outlander929, as you have grown them from seed (well done ) as I don't know the severity of your winter. I would recommend you cover the young crowns with a good layer of straw, just in case regards Cliff.

    • @Outlander929
      @Outlander929 Год назад

      A really cold winter will see temperatures drop to -8C but -3C ~ -4C is the norm. I do have straw so I'll follow your advice as I don't want to lose them after getting them this far. Thanks again..

    Cliff I did not know to remove the leaves of the rhubarb! I’ll get on that tomorrow on my smallish plant. Do you think I could use some rehydrated seaweed I harvested about a month ago? Thanks to you and Diane as always.

    • @CastleHillGarden
      @CastleHillGarden  2 года назад +1

      Hi Deirdre, yes do use the rehydrated seaweed Its full of good nutrients, best not to cover the crowns. Thanks for watching regards Cliff.

    Something a little sad about a bed put away for the winter. All that good care you've given the soil will bring things back ready to go come spring, though! Hope the squirrels found their nuts! 🐿

    Hiya cliff i always thought you leave the old leaves and stalks to nourish the crowns for the following years harvest but i do admit im a beginner and your not?

    • @CastleHillGarden
      @CastleHillGarden  22 дня назад

      Hi Robert, yes you can do It that way, but you run the risk of the rotting the crowns, as the leaves decay. Thanks for watching regards Cliff.

    Never seen or done this done before. Is now a good time to split big ones?

    • @CastleHillGarden
      @CastleHillGarden  2 года назад +1

      Hi Elle best not to split until mid winter when they are fully dormant, or early spring before the crowns start to swell regards Cliff.

  • @wales123100
    @wales123100 2 года назад

    does it matter if the old stalks snap at the base by the crown I know when you pick to harvest you always careful to not snap near crown thanks

    • @CastleHillGarden
      @CastleHillGarden  2 года назад +1

      Hi the fisherman, It doesn't matter If you leave a odd one, with not covering the crowns they will just rot off regards Cliff.

    Hi Cliff , unfortunately we are overwelmed by Foxes so can not use manure as they are atracted by the worms in the manure

    • @CastleHillGarden
      @CastleHillGarden  2 года назад

      That's a shame Mike, luckily our perimeter fence does keep out the foxes, as we have chickens. Give It a feed with liquid fertiliser in the spring this will help regards Cliff.

    Great video. But can you help out a rhubarb virgin. Looking to plant a crown for next year, but need help. As I've tried 2 crowns in last 2 years and both have died.
    Looking to grow in a very deep raised bed in quality top soil..
    Thank you for any help..

    • @CastleHillGarden
      @CastleHillGarden  2 года назад

      Hi DJ Simon, the deep raised bed soil sounds ok. The best time to plant is late autumn in warm soil, or early spring as the soil warms. Plant the crowns at ground level and cover with a mat of straw till It grows through, usually they are no problem good luck regards Cliff
