    Kirk Giordano Plastering Inc.
Hello ladies and gentlemen. I’m talking about Scaffold Planks for stucco, plastering, or painting. The best scaffolding plank is OSHA-approved.
It’s not a good idea to purchase lumber at ant Home Depot Lowes or any other lumber yard for too many reasons to list here. So, please don’t waste your time and money on twelve-foot two by twelve as they bend much too easily.
They are kind of like being on a trampoline without the fun.
In this video, I explain a bit about planks as I had to turn down a job I was under contract to get started with but had to decline for safety reasons.
If you’re looking to purchase planks, I’d recommend Googling NP Planks if they are still in business or any scaffolding companies that are OSHA-approved.
They also engrave your business name on the sides for free.
This way, your pals can’t run off with them.
Or most plastering yards, such as “Westside Building materials,” also sell them and the A-Frames. Google plastering yards near me to find one in your area.
When I was 20, I was on scaffolding that did collapse.
A plank fell on my wrist and snapped it like a toothpick man that hurt.
Good thing we were working at the new Kaiser hospital in Hayward.
I was told I would by the doctor who set my wrist, that I would never plaster again!
I try not to take that kind of negative talk too seriously.
But I take scaffolding setup foolishly seriously.

kirk the type of scaffold we use in ireland comes in 8 foot bays that join together .the planks are 8 foot long and 60mm thick that,s around 2 3\8 inches, very sturdy planks , the scaffold also has a facility to turn one plank on edge at the back of the scaffold its called a kicker board and its there to stop guys either by accident or design from kicking bits of brick or block or what ever else off the scaffold .i know one guy in the scaffold game and he told me that on a lot of his contracts the main contractor would insist that only brand new blanks be used on the job. the planks sit on L brackets that are part of the cross members so the scaffold walk way is a level surface with no over lapping of planks.

Wow. I can't even believe that setup you described. 1x12 boards and cinder-block levelers! Scary. Good video. I'm noticing you are adding about 1,000 subscribers a week now. I'm sure you've already noticed! Good job, team!

    • @StuccoPlastering
      @StuccoPlastering  9 лет назад

Hi Black Swan, oppps, my mistake they had the right size boards however they were not meant to be stood or walked on.
As they flexed as the the 1x10 did in the video, just not as much, but real close.
I didn't have a board that was the size necessary to prove the point so I use this 1 inch board.
I don't believe there are 1,000 subscriber a week, as Jason and I have about 10,000 total, after more than 4 years of filming and uploading these DIY plastering video's and other similar trade tips. Cheers, and have a Fantastic New Year!

No doubt you have read “Christ in Concrete”. It’s a classic. I picked it up off a shelf when I was eating alone in a restaurant one time. Could not put it down so they let me take it and so I left a nice tip. Hats off to those old time construction workers. Love your videos. I’m doing my own place up in New Brunswick Canada. It is aweful, but I love trying. Cheers. “Christ in Concrete is a 1939 novel by Pietro di Donato about Italian-American construction workers. The book, which made di Donato famous, was originally published by Esquire Magazine as a short story and was expanded into a novel by di Donato. Wikipedia”

Kirk, I learn so much from you and have so little to offer in return, however I do believe that your NP PLANK is manufactured from NelsonPine LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) in New Zealand. (That's their stamp on your plank.)
The structural uniformity of LVL makes it the perfect solution for a safe, lightweight scaffold plank. Each NP PLANK is made by laminating thin veneers together which increases the reliability and strength of the product.

Hey Kirk, I used to have a chap worked for me who used to like putting up the scaffolds.
The condition was - He had to test them out first :-)
He set up a pretty awkward scaffold in a three-story well-hole one day - brilliant construction - he tested it out while I was working in a top bedroom - Crash - bang - wallop!! .... He was led on the deck at the bottom with a pile of planks etc on top of him screaming out - "Pete ..... Heeeeeeeeeeeelp!!"
I couldn't stop laughing at the time ..... (Though NOT Funny Folks ;-)
He got up with just a couple of bruises thankfully, but the importance of a solid scaffold, inside or outside featured a bit higher up his list of priorities after that.
    Cheers ..... Pete.

Hi Peter, it is sort of funny sometimes, when the scaffold collapsed with me on it when I was woking union about 30 years ago, a plank fell at the perfect spot and snapped all the bones in my wrist, I walked across the street to Kaiser, they said I would never plater agin.
I was plastering again within 6 months,
The good old days when everything healed really fast.

Thanks for the video. Your wife is quite fetching I might add. I need to buy some plank(s) to make a scaffold based on a 23 foot Werner multi-ladder. I don't want to buy one of their aluminum planks. It would be for light-duty household stuff like painting. Would 2 x 4s or a couple of 2 x 8s be ok? Any special requirements I should be thinking about ?

Plank... what is one wanted to build a temporary 2x4 scaffold with some nonplank walking surfaces, to replace a small deck 14 feet off the ground... good idea, bad idea, should one just let the scaffold guys do it and shell out the expen$e ?!
    Looking good!!

Kirk will answer with his professional reply, but as a DIY, when I painted my last house, I rented scaffolding and plank. Best investment of that entire summer-long job! It was only 1 story, but the back side was a bit elevated. And be sure to use at least 2 plank, preferably 3, per scaffold. To save costs, I rented enough to run an entire side, then would move it as I worked around the house. My labor was cheaper than the extra scaffold!

kirk its good that your pointing out safety concerns regarding scaffolding planks, but to be honest with you the planks that you do use ,there is no way i would use them over a ten foot span i.m.o there is to much flex in them. i would only use them if there was a support bar put in at the 5 foot mark to break the ten foot span.i was looking at 2 of your videos in particular .1st one is (wind driven rain and water intrusion on stucco walls) in this one there appears to be so much flex in the planks that when you stand in the middle of one ,the plank deflects so much that top of the plank bends down to the level of the bottom of the one next to it, presenting a dangerous trip hazard .in your video(acrylic skim coat over old existing acrylic coat to avoid ghosting effects)apart from the fact that your up 3 lifts standing on just 2 planks with no safety railing and another plasterer with you, if either one of you take a step back and clip your boot heel on the plank next to it you don,t need me to work out what could happen to ye...i.m.o you should take a serious look at both of these videos particularly the second one.apart from safety concerns its just plain uncomfortable to be walking around on planks that are flexing all over the place.take the time to put up the safety rail it takes a few minutes.better than pushing up daisys 30 or 40 years to early.

are you serious,, that plank you were walking on looked like a 3/4 inch thick board,, surely they did not build scaffold with that for planking did they?
the laminated is the way to go , but have saw it fail,,, that stuff needs to be inspected as it goes up,, scaffold boards take a lot of abuse for sure,,
i believe if you dont get that scaffold planking out of the patio area you gonna have one unhappy wife there,, I believe I would get that moved ASAP,,
my family were masons,, before laminated planking came out,, they used southern yellow pine (low to no knots) and oak,, as a kid I used to have to clean those damned things , scape em, wash em, dry em in stacks with strips to air out, and oil em down,, keep the ends trimmed, keep em cleated where they would start to split of check,, damn I do not miss those days at all.
anyway,, good vid,, glad to see someone talk about the safety of scaffolding,, scaffolding can get you killed as well as those around you,,, good vid
I remember when I worked with my tools,, I always done better work and was more productive if I was working on good scaffolding,,,
bottom line I am with you,, good planking and scaffolding is money well spent,, and I would not risk my life or lives of those around me with piss poor scaffold ,, it aint worth it..
what is a little sad,, there are a lot of folks in the trades today that are really I say are ignorant,, ( i dont think they are stupid ,, well maybe some are) but a lot just have not been educated or taught the right way to do things ,, and end up hurting themselves, or others,, and can not perform thier work well due to bad scaffold.. I never was a safety fanatic,, but good common sense is really all it takes,,, just is a lot of folks today in the industry just lacking in common sense.
I have fell from poor scaffold, or weak boards,, as I am sure you have,, if we are lucky enough to survive,, it makes you a little smarter when working on scaffolding after the fall.,,
I still just cant believe that board was what someone put up for planking,, thats just plain stupid,, and as you know .. "you can't fix stupid"
ok,, I will shut up now,,
    great vid there Kirk..
keep em coming, keep troweling that mud man.

Hi Nate, the board they used were standard size they just weren't made for walking on, the fella went to a lumber yard and bought the less expensive boards, I used that thinner board as I don't have any boards that aren't really plank, and didn't want to purchase one for the explanation of this video,

Why not make sure that you are truly saved by Jesus Christ and practice this way.
Remorsefully confess with your heart your sins to Jesus Christ who is God and tell Him that you right now are repenting of your sins and you want to be born again of the Spirit from above. Tell Jesus that you are remorsefully sorry for breaking His commandments and that you are begging for forgiveness from Him. Allow His blood from the cross to wash away your sins. After this is done with your heart successfully the Holy Spirit will come to live within you and He will rebuild you from the inside out.
Look for signs that you are living righteously. Things like spreading the good news from Jesus, getting other people saved, a craving for the word of God, reading the Bible, etc… These things are known as a calling and fruit bearing. If you're not bearing fruit then keep doing it. Sometimes it takes time to get saved. Read Matthew chapter 13 from the King James Bible. God bless!!!
