Thanks and Merry Christmas! The closer I get to driving this beetle - the more excited I am - how will it drive? I made the front suspension with torsion arms and king pins and link pins so tight and great! How fun might it be to drive compared to the split bus?
@@LarsonSplitBus- yes sir I was so fustrated and gave up . Now I can’t wait to get back to the 61 vert vw . I think am going to start posting also to help others out as well . Am going to attempt to install the blinker switch as well
Thankyou for responding, I’m having trouble removing the spring and washer, there is a keeper of some sort I can’t remove. I’ll keep trying, Appreciate your response. Love your bug! I’m working on a 65 ghia😎
Yeah there is some sort of clip - I didn’t realize that may prevent the tube from coming out. You might end up having to detach the steering column from the steering box - I wonder if the access plate reveals those bolts or if that requires the fuel tank to be removed. But yeah - it would be easiest if the tube could slide out with the steering column still attached…. Good luck with it!
I think you can - you would remove the steering wheel and all the springs/nut and then the bracket under the dash, and then you should be able to slide it out toward the steering wheel, paint it and replace it…. The donut rubber piece that is about knee level is a pain if you have a new one, because it can be tough to get back in - but I bet you could manage the whole thing while leaving the steering column (inner) in place and attached…
So I can’t get the steering column shaft out of the steering column tube. It catches on something. I’ve got the whole tube out with the steering column in it. And got the new rubber grommet installed at the tube and firewall. Do I install the tube from in the trunk and push it into the car? Or from in the car and push it into the trunk? The reason method 2 perplexes me is because of the horn tab on the tube.
I can tell you how I did it - it is a tight fit with the grommet! I pushed it in from the driver side, making sure not to mess up the horn tab. But I needed soapy warm water after trying it forever cold and dry. I had the entire thing disassembled, and the column pulls out of the tube toward the driver, once you remove the attachment hardware to the steering box….
@@LarsonSplitBus- argh!!! This might be impossible. I was trying to isolate the horn issue and needed the missing rubber grommet at the firewall for the steering column tube. And my gracious I’ll never get this tube back in!! And it’s heavy, because I can’t seem to get the steering column itself out of the tube LOL! 🤦🏼♀️
Looking great!👌😎👍looking forward for more updates! Merry Christmas 🎄🎁🎅👍

thank you. solved the mystery why I could not get my steering wheel to fit .column cover goes first then the steering shaft ,thank you
So glad you figured it out! I was in so many similar situations where I had to use RUclips on a particular step!

Can you remove steering column sleeve without taking the whole assembly apart?
Just the sleeve for paint
