I recently picked up that same face shield from Amazon 👍👍

Great video. I just had one of those DUH moments. I've used Uvex safety glasses for years as a safety director at a furniture plant and even working around the yard. Never thought to check to see if they made one.
    Thanks again for great info.

    No respirator?

I like the Uvex shield also. I got tired of digging the chips out of my woodworking apron pockets so had the idea to grab my Harbor Freight leather welder's apron which has no pockets and comes down to my thighs to keep the chips out of my shirt. I think it should protect against a puncture from any wood that might fly off though I may have a bruise if it's a larger piece.

Glad you agree with my choice. Thanks for the comment. It’s funny that you mentioned the welder’s apron. The next time I put on my apron after this video was recorded one of the leather straps broke. I figure that after having it for such a long time it doesn’t owe me anything. I’ve started looking at a new one and think I may go with one of the welder’s aprons I saw. Your comment is helping to push me in that direction. Thanks.

Alternatively, you might wear an apron with pockets inside out = you’re protected and the pockets are hidden from flying chips!

I have one on my wish list from Dictum. It looks to be the same. Now I just need a lathe :^D No, joking aside, a face shield can be very practical in the workshop, even in a primarily hand tool workshop like mine. I'm getting a lathe at some point, though. It's really something I want to learn.
And thank you for yet another excellent video. I really enjoy them!

Thomas, thank you for the complement. I’m glad you enjoy watching my videos.
As for getting a lathe, I hope that happens for you someday. As a hand tool user you have a step up on sharpening. In a lot of ways I think hand tool users would work better on a lathe than a lot of others. In hand tool work you’re always securing the wood and applying a sharp tool to it do form it into something. That’s exactly what turning is all about. It’s unlike all other machine work.
I wish you the best in achieving your goal. Keep me posted.

Oh Don, you would just shake your head in my shop. I did get a wake up call a year ago when a piece of bark hit me in the nose and left a 3 month long mark...but I've justified it by wearing one when I do anything with bark.
I know, I'm hanging my head. I'll see myself out. ☹️
    I appreciate the video.

You have to remember I’ve been woodworking as a hobby since 1960. Over the years I’ve had a lot of close calls and learned a few lessons the hard way. That’s why I’ve put out a video on safety glasses with magnets at all my machines and finally this video on face shields. I was watching a video from Mike Peace, a turner, on safety. He mentioned the issue with the bark but mostly centered on cracks in wood. He related a story from one of the very prominent wood turners. She had to have the the bones in left side of her face totally reconstructed after a piece flew of what she was turning. That’s one reason I’m planning on sticking with smaller spindles for now. Even that piece I showed in the video could have done quite a bit of damage if I didn’t have the face shield on. As you know things like that happen faster than expected. There’s no opportunity to get out of the way.

Just turn your vest apron around and wear it pockets-side in.😁
