Drove these cars back to back this last weekend. After driving them I was all M550i... but 3 days later I'm torn. There is a local 3 year old E53 for under $60K with only 10K miles.
I was going to say I prefer the E53 until you mentioned the performance numbers. I'd rather take the BMW. Twin turbo V8 with that sound...
The M550i is a true powerhouse! I was comparing these 2 cars, but I ultimately went with the M550i. I have videos on my channel about it. Great job with this comparison though!

Great video! I appreciated the side by side of the MB and BMW. Totally depends on the person but I'd personally have to go with the E53. The exterior and interior are gorgeous. Although I wish it had a V8 at that same price point(75-90k) I cant be mad at what MB has done. The BMW is respectable and i'm drooling over the V8. The E53 just seems like the ultimate daily driver to me. Perfect blend of luxury and sport.
What would you choose between a 540i and e450, and why?
The Benz all day. It is not always about the faster 0-60 times. The Benz is classy, and the interior is first class wow.

Ben another great review. I chose the 2022 M550 because of that V8 and the Mercedes dealers charged 10k over msrp for E53 amg in California. I really like the interior of E53, but the back of E530 looks like the old Camry. The front of it looks aggressive. on the exterior I really like the M550, but performance of M550 is something else..
I prefer the Mercedes AMG E53 because it looks better on the inside and the outside and that is important to me. The quality of the seats and the materials of the inside is also better. Also the Mercedes AMG E53 gets better gas mileage than the BMW M550I and the 2021 Mercedes Benz E class won car of the year. Also the BMW does not have ventilated seats and no panoramic roof. Yes the BMW is faster from 0 to 60 but the Mercedes is plenty fast and will beat most cars on the road. 0 to 60 is not every thing when you buy a car. You have to look at the whole package of both cars and then decide what is right for you. So I will stick with the 2021 Mercedes AMG E53 Sedan which I bought and love...
Believe me this is not to bash your car, but the quality of the interior is definitely not better in the mercedes. I have spent plenty of time in both cars and the leather aswell as the fit and finish are not as good in the benz imo.
@@gunterlauch2264 To me the quality of the interior of the Mercedes is a lot better and the interior of the Mercedes looks a lot better than the BMW. The seating is also more comfortable in the Mercedes(Even Ben and his wife say so). That is why I got the Mercedes and not the BMW. I love my car and get lot's compliments on my car. Enjoy your BMW and I will enjoy my Mercedes.

Ben, cool review as always, buddy, keeping it clean, let me just say, the Benz is cooler untill you get to the performance part. That steering wheel on the Benz is also.. 🤔🤔 too busy, the previous one was much better.. Now, at this level of purchase, one is beginning to lean towards performance rather than comfort because otherwise, just do the E200 and the 530d...this where the BMW shines and it does, so significantly, so... It does so so much so that it leaves the Benz in a pile of dust.... And this is where most buyers will want to spend their money, on the 550i... 💸💵💶💷👍
I chose the BMW M550i. Ok on default(comfort mode) and excellent on sports mode.
I happened to own the BMW M550i and I prefer it’s stylings over the Mercedes but I agree that the Mercedes’ interior is much nicer and maybe a bit more luxurious. Nice review! Thumbs up!!

@@uofan1 I have owned it for about 3 and a half years. I bought it as soon as it hit the lots in August of 2017. It was a 2018, but no real problems. There was a couple of recalls and a seat cooler malfunction that was discovered while in service but of course it was covered in the 4 year warranty. I never paid for anything out of pocket. I just traded it for a new X5M competition which is now my third BMW. As long as you follow the break-in instructions, you should not have any issues with BMW unless you are unlucky enough to get a lemon which is possible with any brands.
@@Phuong_Nguyen_ man I know what you mean, I was thinking the same thing but it’s the X5 M so it’s more M than my M550i was. It does not drive like an ordinary suv, it a little stiff because of the M suspension but man it handles corners like crazy! You would believe how fast it moves and I’m still in the break in period so the engine is restricted to around 500 hp. If you ever get the chance to drive any of the M suvs man do it! I was really surprised. The X5 M is really not that big but it does give you a little more cargo space and a lot of extra headroom than the sedan while still being very fun to drive.

Well, I have always liked the X5 and I hadn’t really thought about making a purchase until Oct or Nov when I would of had the M550i for over 4 years and all warranty’s would have expired. I knew that I wasn’t going to buy another m550i yet because the 2021 is just a refresh so I thought about an M5 and actually considered other brands, but to make a long story short, I was looking into an X5 M50i and was told how long it would be before I would possibly get one built or find one with the colors and options I wanted, the prices aren’t that far apart either but the salesman invited me to come and drive the M that they had in stock and after some negotiations I was sold. The extra room and height inspires me to drive it more as well.
As a previous owner of a E500/E550 v8 bi turbo Mercedes, they made a huge mistake in my mind when they stopped to make the E-class with a v8 below the E63 AMG. This BMW is my new favorite in this class despite the more stylish interior of the E53 AMG. The price might be comparable but the engine is not and it shows in its preformance. The Mercedes might be smarter but its whay down on power to its competitor. I beg that these cars does not fall apart under enviromental green politics because they sell in small numbers all considered.
Currently saving up for the m550i, crisp straight lines is a big thing for me. Soft and sloppy ain't for me. I definitely want that V8 sound and that's what really seals the deal. Almost there, finna have a bright white m550i with big ass rose gold wheel
Just got the 2022 M550 you wont regret it. That V8 will put a big smile on your face..Put it in Eco-pro and it is smooth as hot knife through butter.
I would have to agree with SoftRoseforYou on this. Based on everything that was said and experienced in the reviews of the 2 cars, I would go with the E 53 as well. Speed isn't everything. However, I wouldn't make a final decision until I went and test drove both cars. I am one who will keep a car for 14 or 15 years. What's the reliability on both?
The reliability figures in this scenario will be the same for both cars, as the E53 uses a complicated mild-hybrid system. While speed is not everything, the difference is significant enough to make me choose the M550i. Plus, it sounds better, is better built, has pretty much the same tech and imo looks better.

Im actually having this dilemma right now, trading my Infiniti for either a M550i or a E53, but....... V8 with gas prices going up??? the hybrid system assist in the merc with a 3.0 V6 should be much better on fuel... but I fit in the BMW better.
If efficiency is a priority, check out the bmw m340i xdrive. Has a turbo inline 6 with mild hybrid system too. Beats the e53 on mileage by 1 mpg and beats it 0-60 by .3 seconds. And is much cheaper.
I’m actually shopping both vehicles against each other, if you optioned the sport’s exhaust on the E53, it sounds better than the 550i, however, the power difference can’t be over stated! I need to drive both vehicles, and make up my mind

Honestly, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m kinda tired of the 5 series (I’ve owned one since 2017)
And the current refreshed model looks very similar to my f10 generation.
Maybe I need to switch it up, so.... BENZ? Or, Maybe look into an Audi S6...

Mercedes man to the core but this new electrification direction is ruining that AMG gut punch. I'd buy the M550i too. After 70 mph that Twin Turbo V8 wakes up but the hybrid will just go limp.
After the hybrid the turbo kicks in and it gets faster. So no it does not go limp.
Give me the 2021 BMW M550i and twice on Sunday.

The BMW 550i is a better sporty sedan, has. V8 is faster sounds better, its a great car but compared to the merc is outdated still, the Merc is the better luxury car.

Totally different cars, totally different engines so a comparison is irrelevant. Try E53 v M430i and S63 v M550i.
Not exactly... E53 is a direct competitor to M550 despite their engine and HP differences, M340 completes with C43 AMG and S63 AMG competes with Alpina B7. You may want to do a little read up about car segments

@@lowspark68 Fair enough, my previous car was an M550(2019 pre-facelift) and had it for 2 years(totaled) and my current car (facelifted, picked it up 5 months ago) is E53 AMG Sedan, so I'm also speaking from the experience of actually owning both cars. Anyhow, hope you enjoy whatever you own(or deciding to own by watching comparison videos)
If you have the money, you buy the E53 for your wife and you buy the bmw for yourself. When you take the family out you drive the E53 and when you hanging out with your boys, you all go nuts with the bmw. P.S don't get a ticket.
I've been torn about these not quite full fat performance models for some time. The E53 and Audi S6 are simply not the same kind of car as the M550i. The E53 and S6 are for people who are brand loyal and can't afford an E63 or RS6 - basically for people that must have an AMG or Audi Sport model. In all reality, they are more comparable to the 540i x-drive in terms of acceleration and if you put the M-sport package as well as the dynamic handling package on the 540i handling is probably about the same and so is the price.
The M550i is simply an M5 grand tourer. 95% of the performance with a much better ride and more comfortable seats, as well as a substantial discount.
Throw out the M550i from the comparison and compare the E53 to a 540i M-sport - I'd take the E53 since it probably is a bit more special even though it is not really an AMG.
If you were driving these cars back to back, it is impossible to deny that N63 V8 in the M550i. I drove a GLC63 and it simply doesn't have the level of urgency you find with the N63 in the BMWs. So, if you're going to spend 90 grand on a performance car, don't you want it to take your breath away? M550i wins hands down. Not to mention, that while the interior of the MB is beautiful, it will not age as well as the interior in the BMW.

@@uofan1 Don't get me wrong, the Benz interior is awesome, but skateboard dash design is already on its way out. The BMW has the tablet on top of the dash design, and as much as I hated that look when it came out, now that the screen is much wider it seems to fit better in the cabin. That same tablet on the dash design is pretty prevalent across the automotive world now and doesn't seem to be going away any time soon.

Exactly, im lookin to compare MB E53 vs BMW 540i... i cant choose witch one to pick, and mostly everyone compare E53 vs 550i, in that case i think V8 is the choise.. but for a daily and in town the V6 for me fits fine.

I would never buy bmw. Mercedes all day long the best or nothing! The E53 Amg has both the look and the power, Bmw has ugly look but more power so the AMG is the winner for me.
Mercedes is much more superior to the BMW. The BMW interior is antiquated and is in desperate need of a refresh. My girlfriend has a BMW it’s nice but it doesn’t compare to the quality of a Mercedes Benz.
