A lot of people are afraid of heights and spiders, but that is a fear that sets you apart. They also use them to test car safety features. They'll put dummies in the car with sensors to test the force the dummies receive from the various tests, to see if a human could survive whatever the scenario they're testing is. If you've ever watched Mythbusters, they use a lot of them to test potentially deadly myths in order to figure out if a human could theoretically survive or not. Hope that clarifies things a bit.
