  • As the city of Hamilton works to respond to its homeless population, a new plan includes keeping encampments, instead of clearing them out.

I owned a house in Hamilton from 2021 until march. Encampments were everywhere and allowed. Drugs and crime are rampant, and the idea that it is all due to homelessness is non-sensical. Two doors down was a subsidized house, just like mine. They had an ambulance come to their door at least 3 times because of ODs. Arent there single mothers that need housing. Like comeon. Parks are for families not fentanyl.

My sister worked for housing and you have no idea what a nightmare these druggies and mental people cause for the rest if the apt building or housing complex they are moved into. The homeless who are seniors or working poor is one thing but your heart might be good but it is misplaced you have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about. The misery they cause the people around them is unbelievable and it's not right. One nut in the states burned a building down with people in it. Every one lost everything including alot of pets. He made the tenants lives hell for 2 yrs and the day ot 2 before they where able to evict him he burned tge apt building yo the ground. Now over 40 people are homeless

But renting a 1 bedroom apartment shouldnt cost you 75% of your monthly wages working minimum wage. That is not a livable wage. The idea of minimum wage has lost its purpose and so have many people. I'll bet at least half of addictions in this garbage city would not exist had these people had a secure and safe place to lay their heads at night. You're the one missing the point

I've worked in Hamilton for 7 years as a case worker for the Homeless population. Unfortunately, Hamilton is mirroring the policies of the most unsuccessful cities in America concerning homeless "epidemics" such as San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. These policies do not help our homeless population to rehabilitate or habilitate, and it creates a dangerous city for our most vulnerable, our children.

Ive lived near encampments in hamilton. 90% of these people are rabid drug crazed animals. They dont belong in a park and they don't belong in housing either. They belong in rehab facilities and jails. Getting these people housed just passes on the problem to some poor soul trying to rent out their condo and not have it destroyed. (Which they will do). I rented an apartment once to someone that had 15 people move in with him in his 1 bedroom apartment and while he was at it he rented out the garage to another 4 people and theit dogs. Tried everything to get them out, eventually one of them stabbed the person living in the unit above them and went to jail. Applied for an eviction, 8 MONTHS. FOR A STABBING. The person who stabbed the other tenant had already been released from jail and gone through the criminal court system and was BACK LIVING IN THE SAME APARTMENT. yes thats right, you can get out of jail for stabbing someone quicker than you can evict them for stabbing someone. And now those people moved in 200 meters downthe road to the park by the house and attempt to break in regularly. I moved out of the city last year because of these problems and the fact that they are sanctioning this is absolutely dispicable. Way to go hamilton, i knew it was going to shit when i saw all the ndp signs on everyones lawns a couple years back. I miss what the city used to be. Get these people treatment not housing. It will only continue to get more and more dangerous

We need a segregated area away from the city where all the homeless drug addicts can be located. Somewhere in the boonies atleast 50 km away from major cities. The government can supply them all the drugs the want in that area. Right beside the segregated area, have a rehab center. The ones that want to get clean and reintroduced to society can go there before coming back to the cities. The ones that want to keep doing drugs can stay there and keep doing drugs. They'll either die of OD or they'll come to their senses and get clean. It's disgusting seeing people taking drugs shamelessly in public.

I just returned from Hamilton while visiting with my family. The downtown core, right around City Hall, has about 200+ homeless individuals in makeshift tents and sleeping rough, shooting drugs in the open, urinating/defecating wherever, the evidence is all over. Garbage everywhere, not only was it disgusting walking through some of the public spaces/parks, there was a naked guy raging outside of Dundurn Castle, it felt downright unsafe for visitors, locals and the homeless included. It's too bad, Hamilton seems like a beautiful city underneath, but it is a ghost town when the 9-5 workers leave, and an unsafe one at that, shooting last Saturday night as well. The tourist sites (Art Museum, Historical houses) have more employees than people visiting them. I would not recommend anyone visit the downtown core under any circumstances.

You’ll see kids playing at a park next to a bunch of crack junkies in tents. You’ll see 100 people waiting outside the YMCA as well which is just sad and scary. These people need mental health assistance in the worst way, and a place to stay… it’s just a slippery slope because even working middle class residents struggle to make ends meet.

Unsustainable immigration. Too many immigrants in too short a period of time. What Canadian city has been able to cope with the increasing demand for affordable housing? High demand for a limited supply pushes up the cost of homes and rentals thereby making the problem worse for local governments. I blame the federal government's too-liberal immigration policies that off-load housing problems to municipalities.

Affordable housing is only one part of the puzzle. The root of the problem is a lack of good paying jobs, that these people would be qualified for, combined with a lack of good family and social ties to keep them "on the wagon" and off drugs. Moreover, we have a social culture that simultaneously not only condones living in such a degrading way, but actively mocks these people in private. We need to be more considerate for the plight of others and not always thinking about ourselves. And this means putting pressure on politicians to make the right calls for what's best for these people and society as a whole, and not what's best for one group of elites. The first call should be to re-shore all the jobs that were sent to China and make it illegal to outsource to lower wage labor. We also need to reduce immigration to increase wages in certain sectors where they are being depressed.

Stop building luxury apartments and condominiums in towns and cities that only accommodate the Upper Class citizens. Start building high rise apartments of affordable rental rates under $1,000 per month but with a police substation (stopping drug use, violence, and crimes), CCTV video monitored, secure front entrance, high speed internet connections, running hot and cold water, a kitchen, and a bathroom, and most important, properly heated during the winter. Then make these buildings owned by the provincial government, not private citizens as not-for-profit housing solutions.

I have just finished watching this disturbing interview about our rampant, disgusting free for all homelessness. Moving these camps around only makes you (councillers) feel better and gives the fire dept. time to wash down the human remains, needles, garbage, and food waste that is making our citys rat problem only worst. Why doesn't a reporter find out and print a list of how far away these camps are from our mayor and her counsillers homes? Lets see how their bleeding hearts are being put to the test, or is it just the rest of us taxpayers that have to deal with this burden on society. The great majority of these people are young, decently healthly looking if you can over look the drug fog. With all the jobs available all over Hamilton why are they not able to stop pan handling and put a roof over their own heads and food in their bellys? I remember when you would be picked up and arrested for loitering, and then the streets were alot cleaner. You were not in fear for your life out walking because you don't know when one of these people will snap and become violent. We need mental health rehab centres opened asap as well as drug rehab centers. Stop wasting OUR tax dollars on the LRT which will only give them something to do all day long while they ride around to keep warm and the rest of us will avoid the system because we won't feel safe. Put that money into something that works starting in weeks , not years. The city needs to come down from their isolated covid world they have lived in since 2020, and talk to the hundreds of thousands of us who pay for your whim, that make you feel better, but not us as citizen. Your priority is to keep us safe, not just spend our money.

So the solution is to just let them do bad, but just.."with dignity" what a JOKE. Rent prices need to be adjusted by the government and THAT is what will help combat homelessness. How can the people making decisions be so disconnected from the truth? Or turn a blind eye to the real issue? $2400 for a basement apartment is currently an "option" for my family. What is that? If a home is under 2000 sq feet it shouldn't be $3000 a month to live in. Make better choices and actually help people instead of allowing greed to swallow this city and every other. Pathetic.

. I will solve it for you right now . Whatever it costs , we should be willing to pay .
    1. All mentally ill people living on the streets will be given mandatory treatment. They will receive treatment and support to get them as cognivitily well as possible . If they can return to society independently. Then all aupports should be provided. If not then we need to provide care .
    2. All drug users on the streets will be arrested and be given mandatory treatment . No criminal charge will be added to their record. All supports provided with the latest medical care .
    3. All violent assauts prosecuted with no parole .
If you want to pitch a tent outside Starbucks , relieve yourelf in the street , and threaten people with knives . Then the state should remove your personel autonomy.

I've seen several examples of tiny home encampments in the US that have been done successfully for people that were homeless and are not anymore; where they are all responsible for their tiny neighbourhood and it is helping the people feel more like human beings as it should!. All I've seen here is B.S. study after study but no one doing anything about the issues except lining their own pockets with the money. Until that evil is ousted out it will never change.

Yes ppl do walk their dogs in both fields that's how we found it, but it would be such a good location for the encampment at least to start.
