- As the city of Hamilton works to respond to its homeless population, a new plan includes keeping encampments, instead of clearing them out.

I owned a house in Hamilton from 2021 until march. Encampments were everywhere and allowed. Drugs and crime are rampant, and the idea that it is all due to homelessness is non-sensical. Two doors down was a subsidized house, just like mine. They had an ambulance come to their door at least 3 times because of ODs. Arent there single mothers that need housing. Like comeon. Parks are for families not fentanyl.
The needs of a few always outnumber the consideration of the many to liberals. Our cities are all on their way to quickly becoming like the American ones that Canadians smugly derided for years and years.
there should be homes for everyone. there's no reason for homelessness other than greed
My sister worked for housing and you have no idea what a nightmare these druggies and mental people cause for the rest if the apt building or housing complex they are moved into. The homeless who are seniors or working poor is one thing but your heart might be good but it is misplaced you have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about. The misery they cause the people around them is unbelievable and it's not right. One nut in the states burned a building down with people in it. Every one lost everything including alot of pets. He made the tenants lives hell for 2 yrs and the day ot 2 before they where able to evict him he burned tge apt building yo the ground. Now over 40 people are homeless

@@elduderino3236 a lot of this drug use stems from depression because life is so difficult. Not everyone can have 50k a year jobs..that's just not the world we live in. They should put encampments around these city counsellors residential areas and see how fast they will react to reality.

Half of them are commie obstructionists whose stated mission is to wreck this city to punish us for electing... Doug Ford, when all our MPPs are NDP? The other half just sit there commissioning more and more studies.
What's really going on here is they don't like the city hall encampment staring them in the face, so they want to dump the homeless into our parks so we have to deal with them. Our council and the upper bureaucracy are utterly worthless.
half of the hamilton city councillors are either getting high on drugs sold by street sellers or are getting paid on the side to ignore the problem by the Mafia.

I've worked in Hamilton for 7 years as a case worker for the Homeless population. Unfortunately, Hamilton is mirroring the policies of the most unsuccessful cities in America concerning homeless "epidemics" such as San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle. These policies do not help our homeless population to rehabilitate or habilitate, and it creates a dangerous city for our most vulnerable, our children.
Have you made your voice heard? I agree with you. It's disgusting. Punting a problem down the road. Filling up Barton Street w bs. I don't expect a place like Hamilton to have leadership smart or bold enough to do something different tbh.

Liberal/left wing loons ruining um, I mean running the city. What do you think will happen? You get what you vote for Hamilton.
Ive lived near encampments in hamilton. 90% of these people are rabid drug crazed animals. They dont belong in a park and they don't belong in housing either. They belong in rehab facilities and jails. Getting these people housed just passes on the problem to some poor soul trying to rent out their condo and not have it destroyed. (Which they will do). I rented an apartment once to someone that had 15 people move in with him in his 1 bedroom apartment and while he was at it he rented out the garage to another 4 people and theit dogs. Tried everything to get them out, eventually one of them stabbed the person living in the unit above them and went to jail. Applied for an eviction, 8 MONTHS. FOR A STABBING. The person who stabbed the other tenant had already been released from jail and gone through the criminal court system and was BACK LIVING IN THE SAME APARTMENT. yes thats right, you can get out of jail for stabbing someone quicker than you can evict them for stabbing someone. And now those people moved in 200 meters downthe road to the park by the house and attempt to break in regularly. I moved out of the city last year because of these problems and the fact that they are sanctioning this is absolutely dispicable. Way to go hamilton, i knew it was going to shit when i saw all the ndp signs on everyones lawns a couple years back. I miss what the city used to be. Get these people treatment not housing. It will only continue to get more and more dangerous
I'm going to sell my house , so I will stop paying many taxes including property taxes. And I'm going to camp in the park just across the street
perfectly fine so long as your camp is cleared out every morning by 6:00am and not set back up until 8:00p.m.

We need a segregated area away from the city where all the homeless drug addicts can be located. Somewhere in the boonies atleast 50 km away from major cities. The government can supply them all the drugs the want in that area. Right beside the segregated area, have a rehab center. The ones that want to get clean and reintroduced to society can go there before coming back to the cities. The ones that want to keep doing drugs can stay there and keep doing drugs. They'll either die of OD or they'll come to their senses and get clean. It's disgusting seeing people taking drugs shamelessly in public.

Great questions asked by the news anchor. This is not a feasible solution. Resources and money should be spent into helping mental illness and addictions and proper shelter for these people.
New name for Hamilton will be San Hamilton.... San Francisco's twin city....😢😮
The government should make a permanent solution for this, not just a temporary solution for a week or a year.I think due to high cost of home, more people will become homeless soon.
$10,000 per month .. where has the money go?

I just returned from Hamilton while visiting with my family. The downtown core, right around City Hall, has about 200+ homeless individuals in makeshift tents and sleeping rough, shooting drugs in the open, urinating/defecating wherever, the evidence is all over. Garbage everywhere, not only was it disgusting walking through some of the public spaces/parks, there was a naked guy raging outside of Dundurn Castle, it felt downright unsafe for visitors, locals and the homeless included. It's too bad, Hamilton seems like a beautiful city underneath, but it is a ghost town when the 9-5 workers leave, and an unsafe one at that, shooting last Saturday night as well. The tourist sites (Art Museum, Historical houses) have more employees than people visiting them. I would not recommend anyone visit the downtown core under any circumstances.
These people are dangerous, three times in the last year I’ve driven by massive infernos from these people creating a mess and starting fires, it’s pretty insane, also the garbage that they leave behind is sickening
Man it’s crazy… I just went for a stroll through the ghetto for a couple hours and you can feel the tension… and the lack of police presence. You’ll see kids playing at a park next to a bunch of crack junkies in tents. You’ll see 100 people waiting outside the YMCA as well which is just sad and scary. These people need mental health assistance in the worst way, and a place to stay… it’s just a slippery slope because even working middle class residents struggle to make ends meet.
Whats so funny is that encampment have always been left alone until the city decides to take responsibility, brutally! Months and months of people congregating and growing in numbers at these sites in Toronto. Problems are decades in the making. Open inquiry to what happened.
Unsustainable immigration. Too many immigrants in too short a period of time. What Canadian city has been able to cope with the increasing demand for affordable housing? High demand for a limited supply pushes up the cost of homes and rentals thereby making the problem worse for local governments. I blame the federal government's too-liberal immigration policies that off-load housing problems to municipalities.
These encampments became permanent instead of being temporary sleeping areas like in the 20th centuy. Vagrants would find a quiet spot to sleep the night, then be gone in the morning at sunrise. You would never know they were there, no garbage lying around, no tents left, no sleeping bags lying around.
This is what the Toronto resident will experience when they vote Olivia Chow as their new mayor.
For sure.
How do I get free water and hydro? What is wrong with this city? Guess that's why property taxes just went up!
Such bullshit.. I may just go homeless now and sleep around all day
This is more of a byproduct of the pandemic than inflation. We have so many shelters and services catering to homeless we have become a magnet. You don’t see this in Burlington, Dundas, Ancaster, or Oakville, etc. Panhandling is out of control too. They are everywhere because it’s a great way to supplement their income. Giving money only encourages that behaviour. They could be doing some employment training or something positive
So true feed the fire it will allways burn makes sense right I see people doing it I will never give there's tons of work out there get a job get a life or overdose
If Chow becomes Toronto mayor, the same thing will happen here.

Why not! Hamilton is a cesspool anyway, this action might actually improve the city! Might as well distribute free fentanyl as well!
Affordable housing will never be built in this shithoke of a city. I know Ive been waiting 6 YEARS and no solution in sight. Ill be disabled and homeless if anything happens to my family that i have to impose upon just to have a roof over my head. Housing prices are too insane. Id be $500+ in the hole every month before amy other costs, like food or electricity. Canada is dying as our government spends on other countries. We have to take care of our own first, before others unfortunately.
The city is already bad enough. Where I live I walk down the street and see drug paraphernalia that's handed out by the city everywhere. garbage throwing everywhere by the homeless people that just sits there for weeks and months at a time like forgot about affordable housing. Get some halfway house shelters set rules and stop handing out drug paraphernalia you're not doing them any good. Everybody has gone through their stuff some more than others but leading people down the road to easier drug use is not a solution to anything.
❤
Why are you down loading mental health problems, drug problems, unemployment problems, unto the residents of this city! We are the ones paying the taxes for our streets to be cleaned up, police services, health care, now you want to put the encampments in our paid for City Parks. The parks where Seniors go to get out of their apartments for an hr, children go to play, we go to have a few hours of enjoyment! You call this a solution to Homelessness, Think again, solve the problem not add to it!!!!!!!
why not fix up the homes on Strachan st west? put in those who are most at risk, disabled, single parents with kids, who evers been on the waiting list the longest.?
Hamilton is going so down. Sellers who are non Canadians while homeless rate is increasing.
Affordable housing is only one part of the puzzle. The root of the problem is a lack of good paying jobs, that these people would be qualified for, combined with a lack of good family and social ties to keep them "on the wagon" and off drugs. Moreover, we have a social culture that simultaneously not only condones living in such a degrading way, but actively mocks these people in private. We need to be more considerate for the plight of others and not always thinking about ourselves. And this means putting pressure on politicians to make the right calls for what's best for these people and society as a whole, and not what's best for one group of elites. The first call should be to re-shore all the jobs that were sent to China and make it illegal to outsource to lower wage labor. We also need to reduce immigration to increase wages in certain sectors where they are being depressed.
This is absolutely ridiculous.
Victoria already tried that experiment. Have fun with that.

Just need to stop letting in all the McDonald's working immigrants then there would be less homeless real Canadians
Stop building luxury apartments and condominiums in towns and cities that only accommodate the Upper Class citizens. Start building high rise apartments of affordable rental rates under $1,000 per month but with a police substation (stopping drug use, violence, and crimes), CCTV video monitored, secure front entrance, high speed internet connections, running hot and cold water, a kitchen, and a bathroom, and most important, properly heated during the winter. Then make these buildings owned by the provincial government, not private citizens as not-for-profit housing solutions.

Someone should teach these homeless folks not to litter. Being homeless doesn't give them the right to throw garbage around and burn plastics . The plastic will probably end up stuck in some poor little animals stomach. The plastic floats floats down to the sea and innocent cute little fish and birds die after eating it .Shame on those homeless folks for having such disregard for mother earth shame .The city provides garbage bags and they still litter.
Great job Doug Ford. Why people vote for him is beyond me. This is getting worse. We need money injected into this that is spent ...and spent well.
Ya... This isnt an ontario only thing. Every province is having the same issues. Gotta look upward for why.
Then look lower into city management.
Blame JT and his NDP buddy. The same shit in other provinces and cities...
There's literally not one example of where more money injected into this issue has done anything. Many cities have tried to spend their way out of these problems, and the result is always the same: more encampments, more ODs, and more crime. There's no reason to think that Hamilton is going to be the exception.
@@mattyp3119 + Amen to that. 100%

I guess you can't say there is a problem if the tents are accepted and legalized.
Under the United Nations Charter, its against the law for any city of a country under the United Nations protection to make homelessness a criminal act. In fact, it is every citizen's right to have adequate housing provided by their city of residence.
This must be Hamilton, California? 🤣🤣🤣

I have just finished watching this disturbing interview about our rampant, disgusting free for all homelessness. Moving these camps around only makes you (councillers) feel better and gives the fire dept. time to wash down the human remains, needles, garbage, and food waste that is making our citys rat problem only worst. Why doesn't a reporter find out and print a list of how far away these camps are from our mayor and her counsillers homes? Lets see how their bleeding hearts are being put to the test, or is it just the rest of us taxpayers that have to deal with this burden on society. The great majority of these people are young, decently healthly looking if you can over look the drug fog. With all the jobs available all over Hamilton why are they not able to stop pan handling and put a roof over their own heads and food in their bellys? I remember when you would be picked up and arrested for loitering, and then the streets were alot cleaner. You were not in fear for your life out walking because you don't know when one of these people will snap and become violent. We need mental health rehab centres opened asap as well as drug rehab centers. Stop wasting OUR tax dollars on the LRT which will only give them something to do all day long while they ride around to keep warm and the rest of us will avoid the system because we won't feel safe. Put that money into something that works starting in weeks , not years. The city needs to come down from their isolated covid world they have lived in since 2020, and talk to the hundreds of thousands of us who pay for your whim, that make you feel better, but not us as citizen. Your priority is to keep us safe, not just spend our money.
So the solution is to just let them do bad, but just.."with dignity" what a JOKE. Rent prices need to be adjusted by the government and THAT is what will help combat homelessness. How can the people making decisions be so disconnected from the truth? Or turn a blind eye to the real issue? $2400 for a basement apartment is currently an "option" for my family. What is that? If a home is under 2000 sq feet it shouldn't be $3000 a month to live in. Make better choices and actually help people instead of allowing greed to swallow this city and every other. Pathetic.
He said that is the opposite of Toronto but Olivia Chow is leading the polls in Toronto and she wants to do the same thing. So Toronto will do the same after election.
If she wins, that's exactly what she'll do.
It's so wild how Chow placed third against John Tony and Dougie like 6 years ago and now just based on name recognition she is certain to be elected mayor of Canada's largest city...

1. All mentally ill people living on the streets will be given mandatory treatment. They will receive treatment and support to get them as cognivitily well as possible . If they can return to society independently. Then all aupports should be provided. If not then we need to provide care .
2. All drug users on the streets will be arrested and be given mandatory treatment . No criminal charge will be added to their record. All supports provided with the latest medical care .
3. All violent assauts prosecuted with no parole .
If you want to pitch a tent outside Starbucks , relieve yourelf in the street , and threaten people with knives . Then the state should remove your personel autonomy.

Whether a city "allows" encampments or not, they exists in every major city in this country, and to think they're going to magically disappear, is delusional.
Send them to Nunavut
Funny how we have(and have had) so many empty schools in Hamilton over the last 10 years and haven't bothered to use them to solve the homeless issues but rather tear them down to build 30 story condo buildings & brand new one family homes that the majority cannot afford. I've seen several examples of tiny home encampments in the US that have been done successfully for people that were homeless and are not anymore; where they are all responsible for their tiny neighbourhood and it is helping the people feel more like human beings as it should!. All I've seen here is B.S. study after study but no one doing anything about the issues except lining their own pockets with the money. Until that evil is ousted out it will never change.
Ok.

They should make the encampment up at behind Aberdeen & the stairs are I believe its Mountain Ave by Mapleside ... I think it used to be a hydro or old reservoir that isn't used anymore! Its away from any local neighborhood ... there are 2 major fields here ... I'm talking about the upper one. Yes ppl do walk their dogs in both fields that's how we found it, but it would be such a good location for the encampment at least to start. My son and I have seen 1 person camping here and we never saw or heard them. Never imposed on us walking the trail and playing with our dog in this field! Idk why the city isn't looking here!
