San Diego is a beautiful city. I've never seen a Padres game but I've walked around outside the ballpark and it is really nice. So many options to do before or after the game.
Excellent report on the greatness of Petco Park. I've been a season ticket holder since the Park opened in 2004. After visiting many parks around the country, it's still after almost 20 years in existence, my favorite park, but I'm a little biased. I lived in the Bay Area for about 3 years and went to many A's games in the late 90's. I hope someday Oakland can have something as great as Petco Park, the current A's home is not even close to this gem in San Diego.
I've lived in San Diego most of my life and what Mr. Mores did to build Petco Park is just great. Sure it's a tourist city but the fans who show up to games love our Padres. We have become a big league city.
I'm a youngin so whenever I hear Padres I think Petco Park, it's such an amazing park and honestly I would not have been nearly as into baseball if I had to see them play at Qualcomm, Petco Park's upper nosebleeds feel so much closer to the field.
As a native San Diegan who currently lives in Berkeley, I’d love to see the A’s build a beautiful stadium like Petco Park in Oakland. Love your videos Brodie!
Had my season tickets since they were at Qualcomm. Went to the Parade after their 98 post game run. We all walked to the future site of the ballpark. My how it has changed old warehouse to a rich and diverse social gathering place. Petco also host concerts. Saw Garth Brooks there in May. Awesome!
Thanks. Being from Europe, I'll visit southern California next Spring, will definitely consider taking a trip down to SD. Thanks for the vid, good stuff
Great stuff Brodie. I strongly suggest that the Oakland City Council take a visit to Petco. Have a meeting with the SD leaders, get some first hand feedback about the impact of a stadium on the neighborhood, the businesses, housing, transportation, etc.

I haven't been to Petco, but I have been to the Braves ballpark many times. Having a ballpark neighborhood like that is really nice. Going to a ball game becomes less a "get in and get out" affair and more of an all day event, especially on the weekends. Now, whether it's paid for with public or private money is a separate matter. I do have to disagree with your statement about how if San Diego had lost the Padres they would have lost baseball forever. 1) They figured out a viable solution and didn't lose the team. 2) San Diego is a big enough market and far enough away from any other franchises that they could very well have attracted another franchise at a later date. Oakland, on the other hand, is less than 30 miles from the SF ballpark and there's no way the Giants would ever allow a team to move back into Oakland.
I agree. This is Oakland's last chance to be home to a major sports franchise. If they blow it, they will become just another one of the many municipalities in CA that people get confused about.
I went to 2 games in late July this year. It was fun as they were facing the Twins and for the game on Saturday Sonny Gray pitched and he got the win and then the next game on Sunday saw Sean Manaea pitch and get the one. I got to see 2 former A's pitcher on the same weekend which was great.
Yeah, Petco Park has been a success here in San Diego. Redevelopment has been mostly a success. There have been a few projects in the surrounding area which were premature, like 30 or so story skyscraper towers of residential units but in general a pretty good mix of residential and business have taken over the area and most of the old businesses which never had a chance like ancient theaters had to go if it cost more to renovate than made business sense. If there is one fly in the ointment regarding redevelopment planning, it's that the local train doesn't connect to the airport. I haven't been to a major city anywhere else in the US where the train doesn't have a terminal inside the airport. You have to either ride a limited bus line or Uber about a half mile(?) to major public transportation and trains.

Manfred doing all he can to get the A's to Vegs. No way in hell the relocation fee was waived without the other owners on board. And who convinced them? Manfred, of course.
There is no way the relocation fee has been eaived or will be waived. Why would any owner give up their share of relocation fee for a team to move into a potential expansion city? Answer: Owners would never vote to give up their share of such a huge fee. If thr A’s move to Vegas, which I highly doubt will happen, they will have to pay the full amount of the relocation fee. If not paying that fee was an option, the A’s would have already made the decision to move and not continue trying to negotiate with Oakland officials. Nobody would continue with efforts to get a new stadium in Oakland if moving to Vegas was a realistic option because the relicatuon fee has been waived (or will be waived). Manfred doesn’t have the ability to convince any owner to vote gainsy their own economic best interests. Manfred works for the owners, they don’t work for him.

Oakland officials have to make a basic decision about whether they want to pay a majority share of the cost to build a new stadium in order to keep the A’s or do they pass on a new stadium and lose the A’s. I can understand a decision either way. But it appears Oakland official want it both ways by thinking they can keep the A’s in Oakland without paying any costs for a new stadium. That thinking is highly delusional. Oakland official simply need to grow a pair and make a decision either way. I don’t recall the specifics, but last I heard was the costs would be split between Oakland and the A’s with Oakland paying a bigger share of the costs (which is usually the case for any city where a new stadium is built). If Oakland doesn’t want to cover the cost to keep the A’s, then they have no right to complain about the A’s leaving. If Oakland thinks they will be able to keep the A’s and not pay any of the cost to build a new stadium, they are severely deluded. It all comes down to Oakland deciding if they want to pay the price to keep the A’s by financing a share of the cost to build a new stadium. Not any more complicated than that.
