The concept still exists. The AC-130 called "Fat Albert" for the US Navy Blue Angels has rockets. They need them for assisted takeoff due to the weight of the aircraft when fully loaded with the squadron's cargo. It's not always needed, but they do use em when necessary. Plus the takeoff is awesome to see at an air show.

What most people dont know is that another program was going on as a backup for this attempt. A bunch of OH 6 aircraft were being modified by the Army National Guard depots to strengthen the OH 6 to carry one ranger and a pilot. A hook was mounted on the belly for the ranger to hang from after putting as many of the hostages in as possible and then taking off. I have seen info about this operation before , but nothing about the other project. Might come to light one day.

Some dark but legit funny humor to the failed Eagle Claw operation was one of the Delta operators actually was sound asleep on that C-130 that got crashed into, waking up to the plane on fire. He didn't even hesitate to just jump out the nearest door, not bothering for a parachute to to check what he was jumping into (thankfully it hadn't left the ground so he suffered minor injuries). When another operator asked him what he planned to do after jumping like he did, he replied "One problem at a time, Eric, one problem at a time." Only good to come of the failed attempt was the creation of special fireproof suits for the operators and the creation of the 160th SOAR Wing for special forces to work with as the Navy choppers where the main problem.
