THROWS COACHES, THROWERS, & PARENT THROWS COACHES,
We know why you’re here.
Learning Track and Field throwing events: Glide Shot, Rotational Shot Put & the Discus throws is hard… really hard.
It’s technical, it’s not natural, and you have to spend equal time between building up strength levels & mastering throws technique.
For throwers and parents of throwers, you find you’re on a deserted island looking for a throws coach, and if you are a throws coach, well… you’re like a unicorn! Rare & beautiful.
But at the end of the day, throwing the shot put and the discus is awesome!
It’s a sport of warriors, gladiators and truly the OGs of the Olympic games.
So why is it not more popular?
It’s because unlike football or soccer, where you can find a congressional library of information on how to play, and there are coaches everywhere you look, throwing is more like a scavenger hunt…
Except, you have no idea what it is you’re looking for.
What you need is a solid, proven track and field, throws training resource to go to in order to understand
All the technical positions.
The key drills to perfect shot put & discus throws technique.
Tutorials on how to throw the shot put & the discus
and educational classes & lessons on how to coach the throws for every level of athlete.
Whatever it is for you…
We’ve got good news for you-
This is EXACTLY why we built the Throwing Chain Reaction System®, or TCR for short.
Once inside this comprehensive track and field, throws training system, you’ll be consistently getting better at training and coaching for bigger results faster than you ever thought possible.
No more spending hours searching online for some glimmer of hope video- in fact you can enjoy training or coaching again since you now know what to do and how to do it.
If you’ve been throwing for a while or coaching your whole life, you’ll gain so much more insight and start advancing quickly.
Nothing is more motivating than success.
and it all starts at Pillar 1…. oh, you’ll learn all about that inside the TCR System.

i am 65 years old and threw the discus in high school. I pulled out my rusty discus and was light tossing and found your video. I never had a coach explain the release. Awesome, it is inspiring me to get into masters competition. Thank you
Awesome. Thanks for the comment. 💪
Go for it! Kansas, Japan May 2021. Finland World Masters this year I think, also. Once per week try standing throws with a 3kg medicine ball. It really helps!
Your rusty busty ass can’t throw at that age! Nigga might have to get hip surgery
M?mmmm+op0 pop ikmfm?
I want to be like you now what can I do
So I just found out I've been throwing discus wrong for a couple years....thanks for the video it was very helpful

@@aretethrowsnation thank you!!
Hahaha my friend Dillon released out the back if the hand the past few years 😂
I know Im randomly asking but does someone know a way to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the account password. I would love any tips you can give me.
@Jaden Reginald instablaster =)
I have never worried about my hand grip but after this video I think I am going to consider the grip more. Thanks
Ji Ji makes a difference. 👊. Worth playing with.
I got a PB next session after this video :)
Ji Ji way to go!!!
My experience is that many beginner throwers are either sub-consciously or consciously afraid that the disc is going to fall out of their hand during the throw. That is where the tendency to get the knuckles on the rim and "cupping" the disc or too much little finger on the release comes from. The cure is confidence that the disc won't fall while it is being swung (stop and it will fall out).
Often goes beyond confidence and becomes an issue of lack of specific strength and how the disc itself is being held.
@@aretethrowsnation Could you expand on what you mean by "specific strength"? How strong the fingers are?
BTW back in dawn of history when I was in HS throwing the 1.6KG disc; I used the forefinger middle finger together grip. This helped as my hands were big; big enough to "palm" the discus the way I would palm a basketball. When I went to the 2KG disc, I couldn't palm that disc. I found it better to keep the fingers apart with that disc.
I threw in highschool and I didn't know this.... thank you!!! I'm wanting to throw in some senior games, I appreciate this!!
Holding the discus correctly was one of the first things I learned from my coach. We practiced releasing and rolling with the forefinger many times.
Its basic but very important.
💯
I changed my hand positioning yesterday i got my PB from 29.6m to 30.8m after a few tries. I am very excited to see how much it can help after I use it a bit more.
hi mate great to hear. Hope it’s gone well.
What a small world it is Erik. It’s Claudio. We were teammates at Mt SAC in 89-90. It’s great to see you are doing well. I was searching for quality discus skill development video’s on RUclips when I ran across this video. I will always remember you as a very talented thrower. A couple of years ago I began training & competing again as a Masters Decathlete. My goal is to finally become a more powerful & skilled discus thrower. I’m looking forward to learning from your videos. Thank you!
Claudio Andrade my man. How are you buddy. Been a long time and sorry hadn’t replied to your comment. Hope you are day and healthy. Lmk if I can do anything. We should catch up. Our Mt Sac team is considered on of the top 10 all time juco teams. We had multiple Olympian’s and so many guys that did really good things. Shoot me a DM and lets catch up soon. Great to hear from you.
Best!
This is so helpful, I've been throwing wrong and seeing this video is really gonna help fix my throw. Thanks!!
I am only in seventh grade but I’m the best at discus in my entire grade and am better than some of the eighth grade throwers and recently I’ve been noticing that my release was starting to decline and make the disc wobble around when I found this video I was low key relieved cuz this was one of the first vids that came up and it was exactly what I needed thanks bro
you’re welcome dude. lots of good stuff on our site too. check it out sometime. aretethrowsnation.com
thanks so much for this i’m teaching the younger kids on my track team how to throw properly since they were not taught right and this helped me understand and explain to them more to for what they can fix
I’m a junior and this helps a lot
Thank you it's very helpful
I’ve been releasing it wrong for 3 years! I thought it was supposed to come off your middle finger so I never put my index finger on the discus!
Hope it helps.
Great thx from S.Korea!
I am damm sure your theorem can be applied to all kinds of sports
It is very helpful
Bro this video is helping to make sure confidence of discuss tomorrow zone bro wish me all the best 😇
thanks sir to teach us❤❤
This was helpful thank you! I've been holding it with progressively wrapping knuckles I picked it up from Elite throws coaching the first time i found out i held the disc wrong
Update this really helped nice vid
Excellent, good tips there. I noticed, with a good throw it helps to have as long a throwing arm as possible. That is,. No "elbow Bending" it shortens the throwing distance 🙂Fly high all
Good discuss throw.
Whose watching this before sports day🤣
Agreed
Got a track meet today lol😂
Got a meet in 4 days first year doing it so I'm trying to get the form down😂

Thanks for this video. I'll be trying out for discus in about 1 and half months so this was very helpful!
Edit: I made the team! I'll be going to my first meet next week!
Gracie Ard way go to. 👊💪
Hello...
Thanks
Super sir 🔥🔥
Great advice. Funny how little things can hurt you. Having lost and won Gold by literally 2 inches...this advice is GOLDEN!. Figured this out early.
Keep up the good work...and good advice! VBM
Good job
Useful
Thank you
Good tactics for learner's to learn.
thanks.
I can’t seem to get the discus to release off of my index finger. I’ve tried for a little bit but the change in grip definitely helped me throw farther even with it coming off my middle finger.
Watching this before the meet day 😅
Just an FYI, I am 11 and I threw the discus 65 feet and 10 inches, thanks for the help!
Good work. Keep on grinding. 💪
good jobs that was my first meet winning throw… for the BOYS 👏
Sir how will throw easily
Hello from Germany, i like your video, i already knowed about the most of it, but my personal problem is still there. I have long middle and ring finger, but a smaller index finger and can not hold the big 2kg discus correctly. Du you know this problem and do you have some tips?
Christoph it’s all about the angle of the hand. but unless you have a freakishly long finger. You can and should get it off the index finger. Angle the thumb away from you.
Hey Erik would you have any recommendations about sector fouls with this grip? I find when i angle my wrist back like you show I have issues with releasing too early and often fouling out of the right sector, im going into my first outdoor college season and would like to get rid of this issue any tips?
we’d say look at your video. likely less to do with your grip and more to do with the position of your hips at release. this grip allows you to maximize the radius of the discus from the start (pillar 1) to finish (pillar 6) which is key for more “sling” and thus more distance. best of luck and thanks for commenting.
I know this is a little bit of an older video now, but do you think having small hands is a big disadvantage on discus? I'm sort of a beginner deciding what events I want to do and I don't want to sink a bunch of time into something I'm going to be disadvantaged in.
The key is to get very comfortably holding and dragging the discus. Generally speaking throwing requires a considerable time commitment and everyone has their own rate of improvement. Keep that in mind. But small hands are not necessarily a limitation. Hope that helps
thank u sir its very helpfull👌👌
Sabari Krishanan you’re welcome.
I’ve been practicing disc for a few months & was wondering where can I find a place that I can actually practice before the season starts or like park or maybe even an actual facility because I’ve searched everywhere for months and can’t find anything that has cage .. I feel like if I practice on grass at my local park it won’t be as accurate any tips is helpful !!!
All you really need is a good concrete surface. Grab yourself some sidewalk chalk measure out an 8‘2“ circle. And that’s just as good. Cages aren’t necessary unless you’re super erratic and you can’t control the discus. Ryan Crouser was dragging a portable ring to parks during the pandemic. Or sometimes just throwing off of concrete. So the concrete surface will definitely serve you well. sidewalk chalk is like $1. easy. keep learning and put into the work.
Sir,
My age:15 year
My hand grip and step are perfect but discuss can't long travel (it's (discuss) just go-31 mtr)

Im doing discus in spirts day, ill change my comment to say if it worked when Im done
To learn this, do you recommend to tape your index finger to your middle finger?
jassie boel we recommend to learn how to “cock” the hand and the double finger position becomes more natural.
@@aretethrowsnation thanks!
Are you joined the sports in school or college right?
Wow
Hi sir how to find a coach for discus
🤩🤩
I’m have to do discuss at a meet rn, I have no idea what I’m doing

Sir
I have a middle schooler who is a pretty good thrower. His PR is 128. He just finished 7th in state. He throws it off his middle finger, always has, how urgent should we be about trying to fix that? would it make a big difference?
It’s something that will make a considerable difference. It’s definitely something to start working on changing on the off-season. Plus he’s gonna be going to a bigger Discus. That’s when it’s going to make a really big difference
@@aretethrowsnation thank you! he has a really long middle finger, maybe that contributed to it. hoping to see you all in Knoxville.
@@KevinHash we’ll be there. hope to see you there.
Sir discus throw weight category
I just started track 2 weeks ago and I'm already a 110 foot thrower, I'm 14 btw, thank you

Very good knowledge dear sir... please tell your name? My son is is 14teen years .his throws 40 meter 1.50kg.
Coach Erik Johnson is who is in the video.solid throws by your son.
i have small hands and have a hard time holding the discus properly. suggestions?
stevespyder k keep playing with the things in this video. When you do learn to adjust it takes a bit of time. At first then discus will feel likes it’s gonna fall out of your hand but that all changes quickly (as mentioned In The video). be patient. And done the sweet spot that’s just right for you. 💪👊
I am actually surprised....that the grip is not well taught....one of the first things I learned and researched....40 years ago.....
so important and so often brushed over.

Really don’t wanna go off on some kinda tangent here but I’m trying to incorporate this and it’s really frustrating. I only find myself releasing off the middle finger and getting little to no spin at all now, I can’t figure out exactly where I’m going wrong either.
Tittis well you likely have the thumb up and not angled. Check out our other video on how to hold the discus.

Cool channel, content. I also dream of a disc, and I also have a RUclips channel.
What is considered a good throw for an eighth grade girl?
jessa florez it’s all depends. How far do you throw. ?
Arete Throws Nation TV I throw a 98
But that was last year, COVID-19 cut my season short
jessa florez thats a solid 8th grade throw.
Thanks! I never really know because my school doesn’t have a discus coach
I'm in sixth grade and I threw 83ft with a normal standing throw
