Angela Lansbury joins The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square in a stunning performance of the title song "Beauty and the Beast," from the beloved 1991 Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast," in which she played the character of Mrs. Potts. Angela Lansbury joined the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square for their 2001 Christmas program, The Joy of Christmas.
"Beauty and the Beast" is based on the French fairy tale by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, “La Belle et la Bête” (1740). The Disney classic came out in 1991 and is well-loved for it's music and story. The lyrics to the song "Beauty and the Beast" are by Howard Ashman, the music is by Alan Menken, and the arrangement is by Lex de Azevedo.
Lyrics:
Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then somebody bends
Unexpectedly.
Just a little change
Small to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Beauty and the Beast
Ever just the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
Ever just as sure
As the sun will rise
Tale as old as time (Tale as old as time)
Tune as old as song (Tune as old as song)
Bittersweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong
Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the Beast
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Beauty and the Beast
Into the cupboard with you, Chip. It's past your bedtime. Goodnight, love.

2001 Christmas Concert.
Oh. Oh my lord. Her little voice. My childhood. I’m… I… this can’t be the very last time that she performed this, right??? She got two words out and I just. I. I’m. The tears, I can’t. I’m sorry, I’m not typing clearly. This theme just got even more emotional for me than it already was. Mrs Potts… goodnight, love. Goodbye, and thank you for the memories, Ms. Lansbury. 😭
One can't help but feel the emotion Ellie. I certainly do...
No. There was a performance six years ago when the film version came out. She was 91 then. A legend.
She also sang it at a 25th anniversary screening of “Beauty and the Beast” in 2016 - at age 90! Her voice is a little softer, but it is precious. It is a very moving performance, and I highly recommend watching it. (Have tissues ready.)
Rest in peace Angela Lansbury
This isn't the last time she performed this. There is a video on here when she was in her late 80s bless her
RIP Dame Angela Lansbury. A true Angel of Cinema, Stage, and music. Fly high and rest easy. You will be missed. ❤🙏🌹
❤
🙏🕯
Yes. Thank you for your beautiful work. You are much loved. And thank you for many wonderful memories. Rest sweetly lovely lady.
💖💚💜💖
May she rest in eternal peace 🙏🙏
Her voice was perfect.
She may be gone now, but her legacy and her voice will live on in our hearts and in screens for many years to come.
I miss her so much! One of a kind lady with an amazing personality and huge heart. She was a neighbour while I visited Ireland and she signed my Beauty and the Beast VHS back in 2009.
She has such a calming voice.
RIP Angela Lansbury ❤
OMG, the tears are flowing now. GREAT JOB ANGELA LANSBURY. Whath a beautuful, classy Lady. She has always been my favorite actress from when I first saw her in Gaslight and National Velvet. I have seen soooo many of her films and I have been a fan of Murder She Wrote since it first aired. I never miss watching it at night from 11:00 until 3:00 am. Again, thank you Angela for keeping me company in those wea hours of the morn. Love you and God Bless.
God knows what he’s doing that nice old lady has a tremendous, beautiful voice
Her voice always puts me at ease and calms me down . A shame she’s gone
RIP Dame Angela Lansbury the best Mrs. Potts hands down. No offense to Emma Thompson but no one can ever replace Angela Lansbury in my heart as Mrs. Potts.
Oh, my! This is beautiful. And that choir is the icing on the cake. 😍🎶❤️
God Bless Angela Lansbury… how I miss her 🥺
The one, the ONLY, Mrs. Potts!!! And the only of the song version in my book. Makes me feel warm and secure when I hear her sing!
Rest in Peace Mrs. Potts, this will hurt for a long time. My childhood slowly going away. Surely will be missed
This is my favorite Dismey song..She makes it magical..I see my Daughter and her Daddy when she was little dancing to this song..🥲
She is a legend❤
Loved her.. Singing even when she was nearly 90
I Just Heard The Sad News Of Angela Lansbury's Passing. She Was A Great Actress From The Golden Age Of Hollywood. Rest In Peace ♥️, Angela Lansbury.
I miss her she made my childhood magical when I was a teen saw her in an old black and white movie she was very pretty and funny actress but she will always be big hearted miss pots to me
wow.... what a blast from the past
I love this woman
Forever in our heart Dame Angela Lansbury❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ah so good! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏🙌
Amazing
we must protec her at all cost
Magic!
Rest in peace Angela. ♥
Even as an exmormon, I still love me a good motab song :)
Whether as Englantine Price or as Mrs. Potts, Lansbury is a gem of a gem. :O)
Rest in Peace ❤
I can’t believe she’s gone 😭
Jessica 😢❤ THANK YOU
❤️🥰
I honestly don’t think anybody else could sing this as beautifully as Angela Lansbury.
RIP Mrs. Potts (1925-2022)
She embodied Mrs. Potts; not just her acting voice but her singing too!❤ RIP Angela Lansbury 😢
She was Missus Pots as is Robin Williams being Genie. Nobody can match those 2
Fun fact about this BEAUTIFUL SONG:
Apparently when Angela went into the studio to record the song, she only had to sing it once, because her performance was so perfect. So perfect, in fact, that as she exited the booth, the entire team that was there was in tears.
An amazing performance by an amazing legend of a woman. God Bless Angela Lansbury 🥀🥀❤️❤️
Another fun fact - Lumiere is voiced by Jerry Orbach, who is known for Law and Order Detective Lennie Briscoe, and also for Harry McGraw, a detective friend of Jessica Fletcher's. I was a kid when Beauty and the Beast was released, and I hadn't seen Murder She Wrote but I knew about it and knew that Angela Lansbury was in a lot of things, but I didn't connect Lumiere with Harry McGraw until recently.
Very true story!
She was a Broadway beast in her heyday. 😉
I can totally see this in my head.
Is it only me who find this version more magical than any other? So love this version.
Rob del
You're not the only one. I think so too ♡
Rob del the best I heard.
Prob cause she is the original singer...no one comes close ;)
Rob del I do too!! She’s great❤️
Other singers may be more technically adept at singing this song, but Lansbury gives it heart and soul.
The world lost such an amazing actress, performer, singer, and all-round woman when Angela Lansbury died. She will be loved and missed by everyone for years to come.
In this version you can hear all of Angela's love and nostalgia for this song. And the choir was beautiful as well. :)
She sings that song as if it’s not just the title song of the movie - she sings it as if it’s the fairytale itself... wonderful, so warm-hearted and magical! She puts her arms around everyone while singing!
I LOVE how she included the "into the cupboard with you, Chip" line at the end!!
Every time she sings this song live includes the line with chip. Mrs. Pott's is more than just the song she's cuddly old lady that we all know or have known. And that line just makes it more real
It so adorable
No one else could of or has done as much justice to this original classical rendition. Rest In Peace Angela Lansbury ❤️
❤
You couldn't be more right!
My inner child is crying of happiness, I'm 22 and I'm crying
Callum & Friends I am 28 and absolutely love this version so much better. It's so nostalgic listening to it.
Callum & Friends I'm 30 and crying....I was 4 when this movie came out.
This song can move the heart of anyone regardless of age. I know, I'm 61.
haha same!
Callum & Friends I’m 26 I’ll join you in the crying session
The emotional sound of her voice was simply melodious and tugs at your heart. It's as if your mother or grandmother was singing you a lullaby. Simply beautiful 😍.
She will be terribly missed.😢
RIP, Ms. Lansbury, and thank you.
We we never forget the millions of hearts you've touched with this one song. Rest in peace now, Angela Lansbury. 💖
She sang beautifully well into her twilight years. RIP Dame Angela, what a legend.
I got to see this live. It remains one of the top 7 moments of my life. I didn't expect to hear this song because it's not a Christmas song and copyright issues with Disney so when she said "Howard Ashman" I was beyond thrilled. She sang one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite movies live.
I sobbed the entire song and was on my feet when Chip went to the cupboard. It was magical.
THEN, because it was the dress rehearsal she came back out and asked if we would mind if she sang it again because they needed more footage for the DVD. Dame Angela you can sing that song as many times as you want I'll sit here and love every second.
I was with a bunch of brand new coworkers. I sobbed and sobbed and I didn't care.
+ Wendy Garcia
Your story is magical. Thank you so much for sharing your incredible experience. :)
Wendy Garcia when was this?
Christmas 2001
Wendy Garcia This must have been beautiful! Sorry for my English, I'm spanish and I'm learning.
Wendy Garcia My favorite song from my favorite Disney movie - I would have cried right along with you. What a wonderful memory to have - thank you for sharing!
Angela, you're a queen.
Emma Thompson is great acting as Mrs. Potts, but Angela Lansbury IS Mrs Potts. And with the Choir singing backup--this recording can't be beat. So excited for the CD to be released in May. Love it.
Dale Boman But Emma Thompson did her justice! 😉 She'll be playing Jessica Fletcher next! 😄
Dale Boman first reaction from Emma when they asked her. Something like: I can not do that, I can not compare to Angela. and se went to Angela for advice :)
Dale Boman f
Both of them are also good as Mrs Lovett.
Emma Thompson's cool but she is NOT Angela Lansbury and never will be. Mrs. Potts is to Angela as Jessica Fletcher is to Angela.
I am crying and she hasn't even started singing yet.
J Z me too!
“As the sun will rise” always gives me goosebumps
It's a perfect moment. Right down to the way she raised her arms and and hands and the crescendo....just perfect.
It has always been my favourite Disney song. Thank you for this piece Lady Lansbury. Rest in peace. 🖤
No one could ever sing this song as lovely and as elegant as Angela Lansbury. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is most beautiful in their choral accompaniment. This makes my heart sing and brings tears to my eyes. The absolute beauty of Ms. Landsbury and the MTC together must truly be a slice of Heaven.
I agree, my Julie Andrews singing was absolutely beautiful back in those days!
And THAT is how you nail a song ...
Magic!
💙💜💙💜💙💜💙💜💙💜
Angela doesn't just sing this song. She lives it. She turns the song into something special. Nobody can sing it like she can.
This voice is ageless, breathe taking, and inspiring. Truely stunning
Angela Lansbury truly is England's sweetheart. She always had that positive disposition in her works, and this one believes that she and the Disney crew were very good friends together when she starred in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks". Her performance as Mrs. Potts in "Beauty and the Beast" is her way of saying thank-you to both Disney, and to all the families in the world, for helping her become successful and beloved by Disney fans everywhere. She has the voice of an angel to go along with this magnificent performance with one of the most cherished choirs in the world. To Dame Angela Lansbusry, may you inspire us as a people to do only good, for ourselves and others, and to live your days in happiness and fulfillment, onwards and upwards.
She is the voice of beauty and beast of Miss Pots
Good Night, Mrs. Pot. Until we see each other again. 😘😇
When she said 'Goodnight love' I burst into tears. RIP Angela Lansbury 💔💙💛💙💛
Perfect casting, 'into the cupboard with you Chip' is my favourite line from the film and Disney generally. Such a talented lady brought great tele to the 80's generation. :-)
Such a beautiful version of this song! Anyone listening to this in 2024?
And crying 😂
Crying 😂
Wow. She is and still is marvelous. ENCORE!!!!!!
Ben Alder I was at the dress rehearsal and she DID give an encore of this song. They needed more footage for the DVD. No one in the audience objected to hearing her sing this magical song again.
Give a break angela will want to relax she is 91
Rest easy Mrs. Potts! You will be missed! Such a beautiful soul! 🥀❣️
As a Utahn it was a great honor to know she sang with our tabernacle choir. RIP Angela Lansbury.
I don't know if I can ever listen to this song again without ugly crying. Rest in paradise Dame Angela Lansbury! Thank you for being in my childhood these 26 years!
Agreed
Legendary talent. Angela Lansbury you will be missed.
“Into the cupboard with ya chip it’s past your bed time. Goodnight love”
She didn’t have to put me in tears like that! 😢

EEEeee!
uu
Im going to cry my heart out when this lovely lady passes 😭
R.I.P. Angela Lansbury (1925-2022).
Omg I cried so much 😭😭😭 I got goosebumps all over my body too :')))
I wonder how many children have been sent off to bed by this beautiful voice of Mrs. Potts. This is was the first film we took our children to and afterwards, when the soundtrack was available, I couldn't get my son off to bed without the help of Mrs. Potts. Rest in Peace Dame Angela Landsbury. The stage will be a little darker without you.
I was at this particular performance. I was 16, and VERY gay, and very not LDS. My best friend had to bribe me to go, she did not tell me that Angela Lansbury was performing. It was one of the most magical days of my life. I cried then and Im crying now.
Awesome. My mom has loved Angela but has not seen her in person. She recently died at 79 before I could make it happen. You are very lucky. Cherish it.
AWWWW! That's amazing! I feel like I'm in a fairy tale right now with headphones on, I couldn't truly imagine how i would've felt being in this room!! The child in me felt so emotional!
only finding these Angela Lansbury versions today . you are so very lucky to have been in the audience !
Angela Lansbury and this song were the heart and soul of this movie. Me and a lot of other people will be forever to her, the songwriters and composer for it. Rest in Peace Angela, to will never be forgotten.
Rest in Peace, Mrs. Potts.
Rip Angela Lansbury. You're were a big part of my childhood. Thank you for all the memories
I can't believe that beautiful voice is gone forever but she's left behind quite the legacy
This amazing lady, is an international treasure!
RIP Angela. A beautiful voice and a magical performance. Thank you so much
My Nana passed a few years ago and she loved Murder, She Wrote. I can’t hear my nana speak anymore but I can listen to Angela Lansbury. I love listening to her.
Fly high and light, Angela.
Always in our hearts! 💔💗🥺
Rest in perfect peace, Angela. Thank you so much for Mrs. Potts, and for so many other iconic performances
Her transitions between spoken parts and the singing are flawless ❤. Just phenomenal.❤
Thank you, Angela Lasbury, for making this song as memorable as old as time. May you rest in peace.
She was 93 years old during this performance! Just wow! Still singing musicals in her 90's like an Olympian. What a legend.
Rest in peace, Angela Lansbury. You will be missed.
The one and only Angela Lansbury, what a class act! While Emma Thompson was great acting as Mrs. Potts, Angela Lansbury is and always will be the one and only Mrs. Potts. Only Ms. Lansbury can truly do justice to this beautiful song...and she still does!
Was looking for this song, now just listening and crying, definitely the best version and performance 💔
She passed ..
Un'artista completa in ogni direzione!! Cara Angela, riposa in pace e che la terra ti sia lieve! Certamente abbiamo perso una donna ed una artista straordinaria!!
This perfectly shows, it doesn’t matter how many octaves your vocal range is or how high you can sing but it’s all down to the emotion you portray and the story telling!! This is just beautiful ❤
Agree!
AND.... The pitches and style used here are of decent difficulty, because she was hovering at the edges of her chest register a lot, and transitioning between mix and chest often. Hard to do when young, and she was about 93 years old in this performance!!
RIP Angela Lansbury, thank you for having sung this Wonderful Song that will be loved, cherished and remebered for always.
She hasn't even started singing and my eyes are wet. Oh Lord how magical Ms. Angela was being Mrs. Potts, she taught my generation what pure love is just by sharing her voice
She's such a treasure. I'm glad I grew up with her, from Bedknobs and Broomsticks to National Velvet to Beauty and the Beast.
rest in peace
This made my night, and I actually got a little tears listening!! Love her so much!
Made a grown man cry. RIP Dame Angela Lansbury.
I just heard that Miss Angela has passed away today, and I’m am heartbroken 💔 to hear this terrible news. She was an icon for the world of Television and Cinema, and a very good singer as well. May she rest in peace. 1926-2022
Watching and still admiring her in 2020 ❤❤❤ this is TIMELESSSSSS
Miss Angela was singing from her heart! No one could duplicate that.
I am on a bus going to Swindon. And listening to her again 😭 It's not a surprise that I am close to tearing up. I remember her from other films too.
She was pure magic! RIP Mrs. Potts. 😭❤️
OMG im crying 😭 thank you
+Art City
You're not the only one...oh, why didn't they cast her as Mrs. Potts for the new live action Beauty and the Beast? It would've been so fitting! Like, a little *wink* to the original film...
Art City me too
Probably because Mrs. Potts is a mother, and Angela Lansbury, at her age, only can play grandmothers.
Art City me too!
Rip P. What kind of ignorant statement is that?
I was a young, closeted gay man. Living on my own and super lonely. I came across this performance one night on you tube and sobbed while watching it over and over again. I guess the nostalgia made me feel less alone. Love this lady.
YOU ARE NEVER ALONE MY DARLING....TAKE MY HAND....🌎💝😇🙏
I hope your okay. I got your back!
I hope you will be able to find someone so you won’t feel lonely anymore. Here’s a virtual hug 🤗
Take my hand dear. I'm with you
