  • When Fidel Castro, the Prime Minister of Cuba, travels to Berlin in 1972, he receives a warm welcome. Erich Honecker, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the SED of the GDR, embraces the revolutionary leader and both politicians allow themselves to be filmed arm in arm. As a special honour, Castro hands over a presidential decree giving an island in the Caribbean Sea the name "Ernst Thälmann Island" (Cayo Ernest Thaelmann) and a beach in the south the name "Beach of the GDR" (Playa RDA).
