  • Patty Gasso ascended to the top of the pecking order among OU coaches before her Sooners won their fourth consecutive national title. But now that she has won eight titles overall, where does she rank among college softball’s coaching greats? What about current college coaches in all sports? Tulsa World columnist Berry Tramel and I will break all that down. Plus: outrage! Was it an outrage that Caitlin Clark was left off the Olympic team? Was it an outrage that Dan Hurley turned down the Lakers? All that and more - including Berry’s take on Storrs, Connecticut - on The Jenni Carlson Show.

Enjoyed your video, Jenni. Patty has just done something no other D1 softball team has ever done, four titles in a row. And it is much tougher to do that now than it was back in the 1980s and 90s when UCLA and Arizona were dominating the game. She also has won six titles out of eight. Those great UCLA and Arizona teams never did that. In the last eight full seasons, Patty's team has gone 16-0 at the Super Regional games. That is a crazy stat. Florida is the only other team to have two titles in the recent past and their record has been 10-9 at the SR level in the last 8 years. Florida State has been to three finals recently and they are 10-8 at the SR in the last 8 years. Mike White is one of the best coaches in the game and his SR record is 12-11 in the last 8 years.

Why does one need to be "better" than another? They are both great coaches, enough said.

Mike Candrea is an absolute legend. His run with the Wildcats was iconic, he grew that program from nothing and set the blueprint for what we see today in terms of the high level and passion in the sport. The reason he is such a legend is not just his love of the game, his long term passion staying with the same team but also because when he was doing it he was incredibly crucial to taking the game to the next level at the time. He also had no transfer portal, he did what he did with the recruits they had which makes a huge difference in the players and the team. He had to completely grow his talent. For his time, he’s #1.
Just like everything, GOATS are generational. Patty Gasso is the one of her generation. Same things can be applied for her (minus the transfer portal upper hand) and Mike Candrea was the GOAT of his. It all helps grow the game we all love so much in a positive way and I’m always here for it. Love and admire them both.

The only competition the wildcats had was UCLA so I don't think he's that great they didn't face much talent back then

I think they're the top two, but the fact that Gasso has changed the sport, made it more national but is STILL WINNING TITLES at a time of unbelievably high parity? That moves her ahead of Candrea in my book.

I would say her Softball accomplishments clearly surpassed anything Candrea did in his coaching career but better than Geno? I don't know if I would go there since it is different sports but she really has had a great run at Oklahoma.

Gasso is heads above Mike Candrea, All his titles came when there were only a few decent teams in the entire country.

NO way, having seen those young ladies play they could more than hang with today's players. The records I have a problem with are the 1980's records when the pitching distance was different and no where near the teams there are today. It's why MLB has what they call modern records and really don't count 1880"s

In my book, among active college coaches in any sport, Geno Auriemma, 40 year coach of Uconn women's basketball, at 1,213-162 (.882), 11 Nattys incl a 2, 3 & 4 peat, is the only coach to whom Gasso would place second. Patty's #1 in softball. She could absolutely coach another ten years, maybe well beyond. Only 62, very good health, loves her job, loves her players & coaches, changes lives every year for the better, and most importantly, grounded in her faith, she captaining this ship for many, many moons.

No way she coaches 10 more years with JT waiting in the wings. Or I'll say I'd be absolutely shocked.. My gut feeling and that's all it is, is that she retires after she gets her 10th natty, so 2 or 3 years from now probably, def within 5. Just my 2 cents, nothing more. BOOMER!

    286 D1 softball programs.
At least 40-50 have a legit shot to win every year
Patty sits alone as far as coaching goes

New system doesn't reward the losers of the winners bracket games. It rewards the winners of losers bracket games over them. Which seems totally unfair. Winners bracket team gets no rest while losers bracket team gets a days rest going into the game against each other. Loser bracket should still play 2 games a day.

Two journalists who cover amateur athletics try giving opinions about professional sports. It’s humorous! WMBA = 25 years of never turning a profit due to a lack of interest.

No argument that for the past 25 years, especially before CC that the WNBA had really been struggling. They didn’t nickname it “the dump” all these years just for no reason. But to say these two cover only “amateur” athletics is totally incorrect. That part being so wrong is far more humorous than any redundant “jokes” about the WNBA.

Hi, Randy. We both cover the Thunder, and last I checked, that wasn't amateur athletics. Heck, last I checked, OU and OSU athletics isn't looking much like amateur athletics much these days either.

@@Jenni-Carlson Hey Jenni, my post came off more grumpy than I meant it to be. For that I apologize! My anger comes from the lack of business sense shown by the WMBA. Folks who content that CC shouldn’t be on the Olympic team base their opinion on the idea she’s a rookie and probably not one of the twelve best players. It’s a valid point but misses the fact that the WMBA is a business first and a sport secondly. The NBA went through this similar situation in the 70’s and then came Bird and Johnson and they were smart enough to ride those two to financial success. Heck, even in 92 they choose Christian L (sp) over many other better players just to get eyeballs (ratings, revenue) to the league. Sorry, I could rant for hours on this subject and the stupidity of the WMBA.

I don’t consider Gasso the greatest until she passes Candrea. Mike Candrea won his titles without the help of NIL and the portal.Hell,Gasso may not be the best college softball coach in Oklahoma as Phil McSpadden at OCU,( NAIA), has ten titles.

    • @Jenni-Carlson
      @Jenni-Carlson  18 дней назад

Phil is great, but hard to compare different levels. While you say Gasso has the advantage of NIL and the portal, some might say it was to Candrea's advantage that he didn't have to deal with those things during his time.
