    Excellent info! Thank you. I've been thinking about buying a charcoal basket for exactly that reason-to have a super hot searing zone in my Akorn. You've convinced me!

    Weber coal grates are steel but Weber cooking grates are stainless steel. I was glad to see that tomahawk didn’t stick to it. Also the top vent is on the center of the lid and not off to the side like a Weber kettle. Your video showed that vent placement isn’t crucial. Great idea and video!

      BBQ Mike with the facts :) I didn't even season the grate - was in the back of my head that things might stick. Chicken i'm not sure, but had faith in the steak lol

    I’ve seen a couple of folks thst used the 17” grate as the base and lit their charcoal on it, then built their 2 zone fire there… then cooked the cast iron grates. I’ve never tried it but might give it a whirl.

    Interesting video. I contemplated if coals to one side makes sense in this grill. With the fan, I would think the fan would somewhat even it out. Of course, right over the coals you can get that char. What I've done is use the warming rack for indirect and then the main rack for searing at the end. That way I don't have to fool with removing the deflector for the sear.

    Rob;
    I have been doing tomahawk steaks on my auto kamado also. I managed to do 4 at once but it was tight. I do mine low and slow at 225 or 235 for about an hour and a half. This gets the internal temp to right about 120-125. I then sear them with a map gas torch. This sears very well and does not raise internal temps much keeping the meat a nice medium rare all the way through.
    I even bought a spare auto kamado from Walmart when they had them on sale for $224.00. I love these kamados. I have a Humphreys reverse flow Battlebox vertical smoker for big cooks but I love my Chargrillers too.

    I've been thinking of cutting expanded steel in a 14-15 inch diameter to use as a coal grate. I'll have to try with some cardboard first to ensure I have the right distance to the cooking grate. Has anyone tried the adjustable coal grate from Char Griller yet?

    • @RobsBackyardBBQ

    Would you consider testing out other mods? I'd be curious about a rotisserie but some of them have a pizza oven built in that doesn't close which seems like it would make it less efficient.

  • @jwamerica84

    This could make three tier cooing viable in the Akorn if the charcoal basket has a long enough burn time when run low and slow. Retrieving meat off the bottom rack would be a problem though.

      @@davidm.5727 nice! You're going to love it. This particular video i'm using the 'auto' version with the digital stuff, but the regular Akorn is right next to it. They're both the same size - the only thing different is the auto one you can set to whatever temp digitally and it uses a fan to keep it at that temp. You'll want to order the 'smokin stone' (amazon, or chargriller website) for indirect cooking.
