So I was roped into a very popular MLM to support my mum. I really didn't want to but I love my mom and wanted to support her. My mom was trying to get her car and we were getting close to the deadline and her upline was coming down hard on me. The final straw for me was when she said I "must not love my mom enough" because I wasn't trying hard enough???? I was fully enraged and told her she could shove her makeup up her you know what. Luckily my mom got really upset by that too and dropped out of the business. But damn, these people will do or say ANYTHING to keep you hooked on.

That's horrible, they prey on emotions ect like they encourage you to sell friends and loved ones or make them your downlines, I saw that they actually coach their 'staff' on what exactly to say to people to 'encourage' sales, really emotional blackmailing stuff. I saw that YoungLiving the MLM pushing aromatherapy oils make claims that their oils are cure alls, like they have an oil to help with depression, insomnia ect even going as far as recommendations for oils good for people with cancer, not claiming to cure it but their products help with side effects such as sickness, anxiety ect basically they'll say ANYTHING to make a buck. It's so incidious the way they target people smh. I'm so glad you and your mother don't have to deal with that kind of awful company any more. It sounded like they tried to manipulate you by trying to exploit the fact you only wanted to help out your mum and they were told to get lost and rightly so. Good for you

My own aunt tried to get me signed onto her team on an MLM where you sold friends and family vacation packages. It was right as I was heading off to college and she pitched it as "you'll be meeting so many new people in your dorms and you can show them all the videos and do the presentation and since they're college kids they'll all sign up for spring break vacations!" And then she told me she'd pay my entry fee to get all the material and stuff which that made me feel weird that there were fees. So I told my mom (yeah she approached me behind my mom's back. told her she wanted to take me out for an auntie/niece lunch date). My mom was like "That's a pyramid scheme. You're not doing that." and she called my aunt and that was that on that.

I had an old friend reconnect with me after not speaking for a few years. I had missed her and she had always been sweet. She asked me to come stay with her for a girl's night and to set up a Mary Kay party. I said that was fine and helped her go through her things and we made a lovely girl's night out of it. The next day she asked if I would stay for her party and be her demonstration guinea pig pretty much. Her Mary Kay overlord was there leading the demo's and pressuring people into buying the products. I helped her put away things from the party, then she and her MK sponsor cornered me and were trying to get me to be a seller as well. I politely declined and the friend did not speak to me after. So I was baited by an old friend so she could make money off of me.

@Kewliope Jones This exact thing happened to me and another friend. We were so ticked off! We thought we could slip out unnoticed but we weren't able to. Ended up ordering products that we were guilted into buying from the mutual friend that got us to go. Then she left both of our bags of products on my friend's porch inside her grill. By the time we figured out the stuff was in there we'd had a blizzard and everything had frozen and was no good. Interestingly enough the mutual friend who got us to go to the stupid spa day and got us to buy products never returned any calls from us. She disappeared like the wretched person that she was. Grrrr!!!

I know a few Avon sellers. From my perspective the problem is the customers. They order stuff, then when the order comes in they don’t return your call, or say they didn’t order this or that. So the rep is stuck with all sorts of random stuff.
Or some of the “promotional” stuff is on auto order and you have to remember to manually turn off that setting when you order. And let’s not talk about the factories not sending the right items in the order...
And then the odd rep is trying to sell just a few more bucks of stuff to get free shipping or get into the next level, and they order stuff nobody will ever buy...I’m working through some hand creams from a rep who did that.
Skin so soft is a wonderful product though, no matter what you think of the company.

They always try to sell you on the idea of being your own boss. Ask anyone who was left high and dry by Avon when they left Australia if they were their "own boss", or if they were totally dependent on the company! This happened to a friend of mine. She had already suffered enough, constantly having to tell customers that products were out of stock, paying for piles of brochures, and all for little reward!

I haven't even finished the video yet and I can already tell where it's going. When I was down on my luck and couldn't get a job, I gave it a go. Not only do you not make money but holy shit the people are toxic. The makeup is ~fine~ but the majority of sellers couldn't make it work (or they were very bad with makeup), so they're trying to sell overpriced sort of okay makeup to other people who are also in the same position as they are.
Then when you say you're leaving the people you thought were friends totally turn their back on you and start talking shit about you.
    10/10 should be avoided.

I have a story that actually turned out well in the end. It’s about the company Forever that sell Aloe infused product. A friends mom was a distributer of their products but she played it so smart. Before she got into the business she established a group of friends, co-workers and family members that would be interested in the products and then she started. She actually made quite some money from it in the end and as far as I know she’s still selling their products. The thing about Forever is that the products are actually good.. I always get their Aloe heat lotion for my mom, she swears by it for her stiff muscles, and the Aloe jelly is crazy good for healing tattoos and sunburns. (And yes, I did consult my artist and had him look at the ingredients before I used it on my healing tattoo)
I wouldn’t say it’s a good business practice and I would never jump into it myself, however. If you play it smart, do your research on the brand and the product then yes, you can make a profit. Do I support it? No. Can it work out? Yes.

Back when I was trying to find a job, I put my app in many places, even the online ones.
    Plus, I searched the paper.
I found one n the paper, got an interview, and when I get there it's above business casual but not quite fully business professional.
    However, most wore suits.
Me? I had on a nice blouse, black jeans that look like slacks, and black steel-toed boots that when the pants hand over the entire boots except for the tongue up to the toes and it looks like a professional office shoe.
I carried a laptop-type bag with folders, extra resumes, etc.
I sit through the whole thing and after they show us this stupid video we start chatting to the people around us.
I and a smallish group of about 6-8 people (we happened to be randomly placed together) started talking. It starts with a guy asking me my thoughts on this and if I was getting involved?
I told him fck no, this is a pyramid scheme and I am just waiting to get the hell out of here.
He asks why I say that and I explained it very similar to yours. A couple of people behind us heard overheard and got involved. Did we think it was safe?
I instantly said no, looked at the guy next to me and he said; I thought it would have been but after hearing this? I don't know.
From there another two people joined till there was a group of us and they are all asking my opinion and I tell them when they say that you're free to go? RUN!
This is a scam and you will lose thousands of dollars and be in serious debt.
As soon as they said you are free to go I was up and already on my out when I got snagged and asked if I was joining, I said nope!
He got pushy, tried ti give me his card, then put on this fake smile and charm, telling me that you're not like the idiots here. We can actually use you as a real employee. Blah, blah.
Whenever a guy starts that BS, I know what he's trying to do and it isn't gonna work.
I snatched the card out of his hand and walked off.
I stepped outside and off to the side of the doors, to take a moment and to light a cig.
I stood there for like a min smoking and 4 of the 8 people I spoke with left.
Another add 4 months later, get an interview, go in and I see it's the exact same thing.
    So, I walk out.
    They had changed their number.
    I reported them too.
They didn't sell makeup but "health" products.

It was just incredibly awkward. I was 18 when I joined and I was working at a grocery store. All I wanted to do was makeup. It was an escape from the life that I was living. My friend had a party at her house that I went to for the brand. The friend kept pushing me to become a seller. They had promises of making over 50k per year and getting a free Mercedes, but you had to sell so much and had to buy every product you used for these “parties”. The brand wasn’t even good. Also you had to go to monthly meetings with other sellers in your area. Over half these girls were pregnant or had children.

I tried doing the Avon thing around 2009, think I managed to sell to one friend and one neighbour, after buying a bunch of samples, a carry case and so on it didn't even make a dent. What's worse is they offered credit to help you get started, and I ended up something like £200 in debt.
I thought it was something I could do at home because I'd just lost my mum and I couldn't cope with going back to work properly yet (spoiler, I never managed to work again) it was silly to think I could do much of anything at the time but actually, I'd always thought I'd failed through my own shortcomings and hearing you put things in this context makes me realise I was set up to fail from the get-go.
I still have a lot of unopened samples... I couldn't bear to throw them away after spending so much, but I think I managed to beat the inner hoarder a little while ago and throw away all the out of date skincare and makeup, only the perfume samples remain.

My cousins wife was in younique, she'd occasionally put me into groups meant to sell makeup. I Don't fully remember it but I think the person above her that she was buying makeup from created the groups to try to get her friends and family to buy product from her so the higher up would in turn get money as well. It didn't work out, only like 4 people stayed in the group for a length of time & no one interacted or got excited over the makeup quality. They'd live stream putting it on and some.. shoddy before & after pictures to try and hype people, 'nows your chance to buy ---- do it while the parties still live'. After that she had contacted me privately via FB DM to ask me to join under her wing, I don't wear makeup, I've never worn make up & I also knew what younique was before hand so I was like, yeah, no. I have no clue how much she sold if any at all, I never really saw anyone interested in her posts & I am pretty sure they roped her in because she had 3 toddlers & was a stay at home mother. She often preached the empowerment and the strength of being a stay at home mom who could still make money/work from home. Sometimes wonder if I should have humored her or tried to talk her out of it, I barely knew her..
