    Dan is reviewer endgame, I don't even need to watch anyone else.
    I'm still baffled by what 7hz achieved with the Timeless, they started this whole planar wars thing and took down all contestants, remaining undefeated to the very end (at least to my ears). Crazy stuff!

      Firstly, I just love the phrase “endgame reviewer.” I deeply appreciated hearing that. Thank you, thank you 🙇🏻‍♂️
      Secondly, I love your take and agree. The Timeless is indeed remaining my favorite besides the MEST. Well, of course making room to enjoy some OH10 would be nice.
      I don’t get to enjoy the other gear I love as much as I would love to. But all is well! I get to hear new things so often, and that in itself is a curious and fun kind of adventure.
      ….anyway! So yea, I will say I cheat a bit and listen to my car speakers a lot and just enjoy having music all around me 🤤 fidelity be damned…’ish

    Yo Dan this one came so fast. You are doing a great job as always. The quality of the demos keep getting better and better... 🤓
    My impressions:
    -Stellaris with all the clarity and details but unfortunately very shouty and bright at the same time and I think it could have more bass also to make it sound less thin...
    -The 7hz Zero even though it lacks on the technical departments still so clean and fun. I can't believe it is just $20 🤯.
    -T3plus the all rounder king. Very close to the zero in therms of tonality but with more bass!
    -Timeless very clean and fun as always also bringing that fullness wich I was missing in the Stellaris.
    -Ikko OH10 It was like a mix of the Timeless bass and the Stellaris treble. too Bright but also very full and engaging on the low end.
    -The MEST was little bit unfair comparison I have to say 😂. But is incredible how it can sound so cristal clean without being shouty or too bright...
    -Dioko I wouldn't imagine it could be better but it actuality is less thin and bright then the Stellaris. But still not my cup of tea.

  • @o.t.t.o.t.t.1834
    @o.t.t.o.t.t.1834 Год назад +2

    Hi Dan! GREAT job as always!!!
    The explanation of the graph is that we perceive sound not only as an absolute value (in dB) of a specific frequency but (even more) as a ratio between the frequencies themselves. If we want to increase our perception of the bass, we can achieve the purpose both by raising the decibels in the bass area and by lowering them in the high frequency area (keeping the bass value unchanged).
    In the case of Stellaris / Dioko, we perceive the latter as much more present in the bass although the values measured in that area are actually lower than Stellaris because in Stellaris the high frequencies are so above the low frequencies that they end up completely annihilating them. It's a typical example of unbalanced and poorly tuned signature.

    Dan Sir I totally agree with Giving your ears the time to adjust as many of my IEM’s I own
    (And Full Size Cans For that Matter) on first listen sometimes sounded not what I was expecting for the Money I had outlayed,Yet give them a few Songs and a bit of time your ears seem to Tune into the sound then you get it.
    The Stellaris I do not own but I’ve seen mixed reviews but none really praising its tuning.
    The Salnotes Zero I do own (2 pairs actually as I like them that much) and this review of sound does not do them justice especially for $20,On the Flip side I’m so glad I own the Timeless 7Hz as to contradict my earlier comment these are simply superb straight out of the box and have just got better with use.
    Overall it’s Amazing the leaps and bounds of available Sound you can get nowadays for so little outlay and I think it’s just going to get more and more regular
    Dioko vs Stellaris was no contest as the Dioko just literally opened up the Music and lifted the Sharp Veil The Stellaris has.Moondrop Will retune the Stellaris and it may become a decent IEM.
    On a personal note I still cannot ever see myself paying anywhere near $1000 or over for any pair of IEM’s when such close and even better Sound in my opinion can be had for a fraction of that kind of money,Or Of course I would put that kind of outlay into a full size pair of Headphones.
    Great Review As Always Dan and Thanks for the Time and Effort doing these Reviews from the UK 🇬🇧 👍🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼

And about the 7hz zero I think that 7hz zero just have rounded edges and less of that uppermidrange shout compare to the stellaris. On the sound demo it may seem maybe as a less exciting maybe too smooth. I feel that demos do more justice to iems with a sharper edges and transients 😄.

    As someone who's used to thin sounding treble from my shitty phone speakers before I got the Chus to me the Stellaris treble sounds acceptable but the lower midrange definitely feels lacking and makes things feel kinda off, the Dioko just does the neutral bright signature more cohesively in comparison without making things sound too thin.

    I can't tell how the Stellaris sounds live, but I'm listening this video using the Qudelix-5K connected to my Avantone Planar Pro, and from the whole set of tests I can tell the Stellaris is WAY over the rest of the IEMs, followed by the Dioko. The Avantone has a huge dip after the 30Hz, and still everything the Stellaris throws at it is there. It sounds open, bright but incredibly deep and somehow warm! It is really a strange combination for sure.

    The mest comparison was great. Really shows that having recessed upper mids/lower treble can be a noticeable benefit (depending on taste and song choice). Whereas, the Stellaris shows that if you go too much up in that area, you have a serious chance of ruining the tonal balance. Oddly, I found the bass on the Stellaris to be present... It just wasn't highlighted that well because of the stellaris's accompanying harshness.

  • @nikolaygramchev
    @nikolaygramchev Год назад +3

    Very very interesting review, as many before! But this time I have a conceptual objection - what do non-planars do in the comparison!? Planar iems have different flavours - they are fast, vast, have TOTL separation, retrieve very well details BUT are still difficult to tune. And that brings in the subjectiveness of what tuning everyone of us has as a preference. OH10 is a great iem but it is absolutely different (warm, musical, vibrant), Mest is several leagues above - I love these two, adore them but what was the purpose - proving bass lack!? Stellaris sub-bass is very solid; Stellaris needs foam tips and very deep Etymotic like insertion to be low end good and more balanced. The Stellaris is not that bass shy for my ears like the demo, guess it is also a difference of the chain.
    The cheaper T3+ and Dioko are compressed, boxy; the S12 is shouty and they did the S12 pro, many other planars were sacrificing too much detail for smoothness. If you prefer the Dioko - Ok but for me only Timeless is better but not in all. And I think 'your thin bass' is some mis-fit issue or the Stellaris so bright for you that bass gets thin, but that is different.
    The big 'blame' is that Stellaris is bright - yes it is!! But it has great staging, great instrument separation, great detail retrieval,.... And is an iem that is great for low dB listening. It is an iem that one will appreciate very well if he does headphones.
    Somehow, the implication of the review and the verdict are that Stellaris is useless. It is not, not at all! Yes, it is not everyone's beer but it does many things better than other planars (many qualities not empasized in the review) AND if one looks at it from the perspective of headphones he will value it.

  • @chrisstroud60
    @chrisstroud60 Год назад

    I agree about v shaped sound. It's how headphones should sound I believe. But most v shaped stuff seems to suffer from fatigue in treble and mid bass can get too muddy as well. Getting the v shape tuning right is pretty complicated. Tbh the best v shaped tuning iv seen is the buds pro or the kato from moondrop.

  • @lth_lch
    @lth_lch Год назад +10

    All the reviews on them make mention of it, but it's crazy how much the MEST's staging and imaging capabilities stand out against the field, even just listening through a demo. The Obsidian can tend to sound immersive and spacious at times with the way its bass can "fill out" the stage on a track, and the Timeless has that open, airy quality to it, but the MEST sounds truly holographic and three-dimensional in a way nothing else does in your demos. It's uncanny how real it sounds. The comparison video with all the big boys can't come soon enough.
    Not much nice to say about the Stellaris. It's somewhat detailed, but comes with all the negatives of a tuning that tries to force details on you. It's shouty, thin, sibilant, and the super in-your-face presentation kills any sense of depth or stage. It just sounds like the music is being laser beamed into my ears. The comparison with the Dioko killed any sort of praise I could have given to the Stellaris, and I'm not even particularly a fan of the Dioko either.

    Fantastic video comparison. Not only the quality was great but you shared your inputs with us after some comparisons.
    You got a subscriber.
    I'd like to ask something, what is the "best way" to listen to these comparisons? I just got my most expensive IEM and hope it helps to pick more details among the songs during the testings.

      I listen to my demos on any variety of output choices. I’ve enjoyed hearing differences on my car speakers, my laptop, or my tv sound system. I don’t often listen to my demos with headphones or IEMs. I find that the tweaking headphones and IEMs make are nice for listening to music, but often exaggerate the differences present in recordings. Or maybe I just enjoy listening to speakers instead of IEMs/headphones because I have things on my ears so much that it’s nice to take a break - just listening on speakers instead.
      If I had to recommend an IEM or headphone though, I would honestly just suggest trying different sets until you find one that makes the differences stand out clearly to you most.
      I don’t have a specific recommendation for IEMs or headphones because, well, I haven’t tried it often.

    Mate what an awesome setup and especially your method of testing.
    One thing I would highly recommend.....take a course for the oscilloscope and consider making your own graphs based on your own test samples.
    The main reason is that there are going to be QA differences (especially in the lower price tags) and your particular sample may differ from other testers. That way you have a direct correlation of your graph and what your audio gear is picking up.
    The second reason is that the way information is read is not as simple as "this one is high, this one is low therefore it should have more bass".
    Think of it more as a distribution comparison - if you have two identical results, but at 4k+ one starts to drop off early - it'll sound less bright but ALSO the bass and mids will sound more pronounced for the given Wattage of power being supplied..
    The best way to think about it is - if I move the same graph line up so that the higher frequencies match, you'll all of a sudden understand why it sounds warmer.

    33:00 almost definitely the relation between the lows and highs. the graphs lined up at 1k like this, stellaris has let's say +5dB over the entire range past 2k which is pretty massive for that range of frequencies that define the perception of loundess a ton. the bass measures +2dB. now if you line up the avgs of the graphs at the higher end, that would push the bass difference to -3dB for the stellaris, that is -3dB compared to an already basslight iem. also the mids will dip -5 too and that's how it sounds too, like it has no mids either

    Hi Dan,
    As a Dioko and Stellaris owner I have to say that Stellaris has the same amount of bass (OK, a bit more to my ears) as Dioko has. Ian fann’s and Super* Review’s measurements shows my statement clearly. There’s not much of a difference but you can notice it.
    I think the fit and shape of the tips are the main key factors. It's a cliché but the sound heavily depends on the right choice of the eartips.

    Would be curious to see the TKZK Wave get a review one of these days (price $38~$42). I seem to be going back to them, along with the S12's, most often. They are a brighter hybrid (!DD/1BA) with a large bore metal nozzle and the BA positioned in the upper nozzle...hence they are inherently bright by design. I am 55 (discerning up to 15KHz with a resonant ear canal freq around 6100Hz), so maybe I am seeking these brighter IEM's by nature. However, I have a few other IEM's...mostly good for my tastes (T3+, Olina, Lea, Heart Mirrors, KZ CRN/DQ6/ZS10Pro, CCA CRA, BL-03, and Quarks)...but the S12 and Waves are my current goto IEM's. For sure, the S12's are my favorites...the detail and its versatility are amazing.

  • @QOTSAPT
    @QOTSAPT Год назад +2

    The graph does not lie, the stellaris is too v-shaped to sound normal, the reason why you felt the dioko has more bass than the stellaris is because if you offset the extra treble you end up with a slightly warmer tilt on the dioko, like you inferred. I had to edit the comment because I read some comments, the problem with videos like these is that most listeners don't realise how bad their gear is, if your headphones sound muffled then the brighter iem are going to sound great but then when you go on to try them, they are way too bright and vice versa.

When I did this I actually felt like the low end was nearly identical and the greatest difference was in the high end.

    My perceptions usually fall right in line with yours, Dan. Until now😂 Still, I have and know I always will appreciate all your videos. The high frequencies are rolled off in my ears so the Stellaris seems to work best for me. I also have a Qudelix and use its 64 bit double precision parametric EQ to drive he4xx, 7hz Zero and HBB’s QKZ X while I listen to this so tuning isn’t a priority with me as much as being able to drive the frequencies I need boosted without distortion. I have my two cents to offer: sometimes bass can be perceived louder than the measured frequency sweep because of added harmonic distortions

      @Kenan_Guney Год назад +1

      @@fioreinforma-pilates-bisceglie im not talking about simple eq and i don't like to use fixed band parametric eqs too. My way to eq is to listening sine sweeps and playing with frequency generators on my iem/headphone and finding the spots where my ears perceive the sound of the iem/headphone with any kind of uneven peaks or dips. Then i 'manually' correct these areas by my hands in equalizer apo's editor.exe gui with unlimited band graphic eq. Since every one of us has different ear canal length and shape, the resonances are very different. So the correction way i'm doing is has to be done for each people and they have to do it manually for their ears in order to get the most out of the iem/headphone because again, we need to compensate our ear's own eq (resonances) and get the smooth response. Eq profiles or pre-made eq corrections don't gonna work for most of us as intended. That is one of the biggest issue why people don't into eq, cuz simply they don't doing it the correct way. It's easily the best thing i learned on this hobby and i wanted to share because i don't think there are serious amount of people equalizing the stuff in correct way... i'd strongly recommend you to check some videos about these topics from oluv's gadgets channel, "let's talk about sound quality" video for example.

While the Timeless really doesn't stage... at all. I'd recommend also taking a look at the Shuoer S12, it's tuned much like the Timeless but in my opinion improves upon some of it's weak points without tradeoffs while also costing less and being better built.

    Really enjoyed this. How I wish you also reviewed standard hi-fi gear with the same audio comparisons. It's not that I'm against in-ears/headphones, but more that I can't wear them because I'm electrosensitive and having them so close is a no-no for me. Hence all my listening is on standard gear with loudspeakers.
    A lot of other reviewers could learn from you, but for the most part it's exclusively talk-based stuff. I'm not quite sure apart from the difficulties of switching gear what prevents them playing stuff to listen to in direct comparisons. Maybe it's cost prohibitive, maybe they'd get dinged by RUclips, who can say.
    My opinion of the gear you played? Clearly the Mest is better than the rest, but the price seems exorbitant to me (I'll bet the parts cost is only around a couple hundred at most, and even with research, labour, advertising, distribution, dealer mark-up costs and so on, there's probably a very good profit margin).
    The Timeless seems a much better deal, though personally I'm not a big fan of treble emphasis and would be looking for something around the same sort of price that was a little better balanced for my taste -- but hey, it's all a matter of taste. I suppose I prefer a fairly neutral sound profile to a v-shaped curve.
