Will China’s Covid wave ruin Xi’s global ambition?

  • China's leader - President Xi Jinping - had hoped this would be the year he would assert China's dominant position on the global stage, with heightened rhetoric about readying for war and his country's claim over Taiwan, leading many to fear imminent invasion.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Then there was the public removal of a former president, Hu Jintao, from the Communist party congress and securing an historic third-term - setting Xi up to be President for life.
But, it hasn't been the year Xi and China had hoped for with runaway cases of Covid and protests at the draconian measures in place under China's strict Zero Covid policy - leading to public protests against restrictions, and perhaps for the first time in his decade of rule, Xi Jinping himself.
These same measures have damaged the Chinese economy which is seeing its slowest rate of growth in nearly twenty years. Xi hasn't been getting it all his own way on the international stage either, as the US further distanced itself with Biden vowing to take back more jobs from Asia to the US.
So what next for Xi and China? Will a faltering economy and a loss of patience over Covid restrictions force China to change its approach and tweak its plans for global domination? Or will Xi double-down and push ahead with a risky strategy at home and beyond?

If Taiwanese are so confident in their independence, then they should formally apply to the UN and sign a piece of paper saying they are independent.
The won't so do that because unlike imbeciles like you, they know doing so means the Chinese military will in Taipei the next morning, rather than a few years down the line if they just maintain the status quo.

A country becoming bigger and bigger in land doesn't mean it's becoming strong. It'll even cause more chaos and might even collapsed at an faster rate if you don't know how to control "properly". Take an example of all the stories of empires in history. On the other hand, take a look at how Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan is thriving despite the fact that they're small. It's ALL about system, it's NOT about area dimensions. China is no doubt super jealous and following steps of America and doing it in a worst *possible* way. I don't mean what American did was also justifiable. I'm not American, I'm also from Asia and am definitely not a fan of Americanization. I always prefer Europe. But the point is the situations like in Xinjiang and what the Chinese government doing to Uyghurs are totally wrong and despicable. And I seriously don't get it: aren't they considered to be your people if you consider it's "one country"? A government is supposed to protect its people and thus the people feel safe under the protection of their government. But I don't think even Chinese from mainland feel safe when talking about their government. That's all said, I think Taiwan is an independent country and doesn't need to merge with china. I stand with the majority of Taiwanese.

Japan lost and Taiwan was return to China in another treaty, The Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty. Chiang kai shek's ROC government who was consider to be the legal government of China at the time represented China in accepting Taiwan back for China. It is one of the best legal claim a country have over a territory in world history. And currently the legal government and representative of China is the PRC. The fact is China won't casually send the army to Taiwan. "One China Policy" means that CCP and most Chinese people treat Taiwanese citizens as long-lost brothers. However if taiwan does decide to go independent, then China will likely go for it. Taiwan has or will sign contracts with the US and NATO. If TW goes independent, it will be open to US or NATO military bases, which will severely threaten China.

They need more time to get countries in debt to them and so have more international support.
They need to build their own high chip factories , which now that the US has sanctioned them will take some time.
They need more time to influence foreign national and international organisations.
They need to decouple themselves from possible financial sanctions which they have already ordered their banks to prepare for.
China has always planned in the long term which, with their leader for life, and one party, they will be able to do. They are not stupid and seeing Russia’s mistake has shown them that the West can still hurt them.

China did NOT invade Hong Kong, which is already legally part of China since the Handover from the British in 1979. Similarly, China cannot "invade" Taiwan, which is already part of China since Japan surrendered WWII and returned Taiwan back to China in 1945. The only reason Taiwan has not been reunified back with the mainland is because of the Chinese civil war, where the KMT fled to Taiwan and militarily separated Taiwan from the mainland China.

      Two totally different things.
Similarly, Taiwanese laws are based on the sovereignty of the Taiwanese people. For the BOTs, the UK and/or the British King retains ultimate authority.
Finally, the BOTs are under actual control of the UK, with consent of the people there.

The people of Taiwan just voted in their local elections to overwhelmingly keep the status quo with China. The ruling DPP lost comprehensively to the pro Beijing KMT. The election had been promoted and fought by the DPP as a referendum to send a message to China and Beijing that Taiwan wanted to cease being a part of China. The result did anything but, with the message being for peace and cooperation with the mainland. The result was so bad, that Tsai Ing wen (who invited Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan) resigned as leader of the DPP. The election in 2024 will almost certainly reinstate the KMT as the governing party, (save for interference and organized colour revolutions from the US) who advocate the One China policy. The US will now double down and do everything they can to provoke China into some hostile action against Taiwan, but China just has to bide it's time and wait for the next election. Given November's result, the US now has absolutely no mandate in Taiwan.
