  • Embraer’s new C390 Millennium aircraft promises to revolutionize the industry, and with global tensions continuing to rise, it seems like every nation will beg for this aircraft.
For many decades now, the medium-sized military cargo transport market has been dominated by Lockheed Martin's C130 Super Hercules.
    So, what happened?

Embraer has a great product here. I imagine Sweden will get a few of these soon (via the Gripen JAS39 E deal). And this could be a killer combo now that Sweden is becoming aligned (probably increasing the market for the Gripen) with nations that want to up their air defence without going insane with the lifetime costs of operation. Provide the extremely capable and reasonably costly Gripen with a medium transporter/air refueler like the 390 and the new NATO trainer jet (that the SAAB also designed with Boeing) - offering a really good trainer both for advanced 4th and 5th gen pilots.
For example, Romania has just received the first of 32 F-16 A/MLU fighters from Norway. Though they were massively upgraded 2 decades ago to Block 50 standard), the bodies are 40 years + old. Thus we can easily imagine that Romania will use the F-16 as a stepping stone to new(er) airframes within the next decade. These are markets where the Swedish-Brazilian partnership can find a lot of success for nations that want an air defence, not being willing to pay the extra cash to fly 5th gen deep into contested airspace outside their own borders.
I even think this combo can be really interesting for nations that (will) fly F-35s, as we see even the USA now is busy procuring advanced gen 4+ fighters to their stealth fleet (the F-15EX and F-16 block 70). Poland is doing the same - creating a mixed fleet of 4th and 5th gen assets, as is the UK (flying F-35 B and the Typhoon). Israel, Japan, Germany, Italy, South Korea (etc.) are applying the same strategy of a "generation mix" (yes I know that fighter generations are a mess and not really indicating true capabilities/the right job).

I think the Brazilian embryer. C3 90 is a pretty impressive cargo plane. I think it has its roles. For countries that don't need a medium left aircraft. Going to real dusty Rough airstrips I think it's perfect. It's like a smaller version of the bowl in C17 globe master. Think the Lockheed. 130 Hercules is a pretty robust cargo aircraft. That can land in dusty. Not really well kept air strips. The C130 hit Hercules has been around since the late 1950s. It's try testing and true, but the embryer. Option is pretty good.

It will certainly be hard to dethrone the C-130. It will be interesting to observe how this plays out over several decades. The C390 has remarkable abilities, but is largely unproven in real world situations. As a Brazilian, I hope the C390 has a long and successful lifespan. Being a product of Embraer, it starts out on solid footing with a worldwide support system already in place. Given Embraer's success, it is likely that the C390 will follow suit. We shall see...

Lety me give you just one example. In the US a C130 model is used as a Hurricane Hunter. It is perfect for that mission as is the Coast Guard use of the C130 for search and rescue. Now when it comes to airlift and distance the C390 will excel but in a small country moving freight say around a country the size of Italy, a C130 would be just fine, Different strokes for different folks.

Considering only about technical, a country that have aging C-130s should consider the C-390 as a viable solution.
Alright, all the maintenance crew should be considered, to see if it's better to maintain 4 T56 turboprop engines or 2 IAE turbofans, and what does that tend to be as availability of the aircraft.
Fuel consumption, time to deliver, etcetera.
We all know that giving a mission to a C-130... consider the mission is done.
Only time will tell if this would be true also to the C-390.
    It appears to be fine.
I have a feeling, by it look, that it can be stretched a little more. If it's true, what would be its characteristics? Even more game changer?

It's so easy to understand this is an made in US video. Not only one reference to the Airbus A400 which also competes with the Super Hercules and has been adopted by major european military as well as asian countries like Malasya and Indonesia. The KC-390 Millennium is though a game changer with jet turbofans instead of usual transport planes with propellers. Both have advantages and disadvantages, but summing all up my money is (an literally is a PT bought 5 to reforce or replace its ageing fleet of Hercules C-130H, although all of them had been overhauled few months ago - we still have only 1 of 5 [the later to be delivered in 2027 - we're a small country but had to upgrade the Hercules cause we couldn't wait to operate cargo at full throttle just in 2027]) on the Embraer Model. Portugal was the first European and NATO (with NATO compliance already in use in the first received aircraft) country to operate one of this. News are that other EU and NATO countries are already interested in purchasing numbers of this plane to operate in their air forces. In Europe Hungary, The Netherlands and Austria, surpassing 4 contenders in the Netherlands conducted tests and even the air force demands for the airplane. Outside Europe, South Korea has bought 3 as they see a lot of potential regarding the Aircraft, which is no surprise, by 2026 and likely to buy more. But really, where was any mention to the A400 which was the biggest competitor of the Super Hercules?.... Poor research, I might guess.
