I traveled to New York by myself last summer (as an European 20-year old girl) and it was the best experience ever. (I did meet up with a friend there, but only for like 12 hours or something). I do admit I was a bit nervous at that time, my first time all alone in such a big city, but I kinda had planned everything in advance (like what things to visit, where to eat, etc) and I wandered the hell out of the NYC streets. Traveling solo is so refreshing in such a big city, surrounded by people of all sorts; you're just minding your own thing, you don't have to take care of anyone else (only your belongings, haha, be careful with that), you can visit any museum you want. The only downside is that there's nobody to take good pictures of you lol.
And I also managed to find a fairly cheap airbnb up in the Washington Heights, pretty cozy area, close to a subway station.
To anyone who is afraid to do it: JUST DO IT, it will be amazing, I promise. Just be mindful about your surroundings, keep grounded and enjoy the views! New York is wonderful!

Alright, stand your ground and do no be timid, that is the best way. I love to talk about traveling, the first time I was in Europe I was scared that I would end up in a bad place so I took taxis , all over. The second time I could not afford the luxury of taxis, I could not afford to be scared, so I walked and took buses. I have been with the same women for almost 30 years , but I still travel alone. I spent 3 months in Europe, I have taken tours and cruises do not fall for low prices, it happened to me.Expat Explorer Tours = garbage, Contiki Tours=garbage, Costa and Carnival Cruises=garbage.Tours are a good way to be safe and see places but use caution, for instance if you have never been to Ireland , I suggest CIE Tours , A taste of Ireland, it is fantastic nice hotels , buffet breakfast and dinners, dinner shows, all good, all attractions are paid for.The only complaint I have is, they mentioned , would see a must see in life, The Trinity College Library, they pointed it out on the bus as we drove by it.I also do not fly , although I have been on all modes of transport , with the exception of a private jet and hot air balloon, maybe someday. I took The Queen Mary 2 out of New York to England, it is too basic for me, the next time I took The Norwegian Escape from England to Miami, a much better ship.I enjoy , non conventional modes of transport, I love train travel. When I travel I pack heavy, extensive first aid kit, plenty of meds, Grovel and Imodium,Pepto etc,bug spray , sun screen, small flashlights , a whistle, just in case there is a problem , I always carry the whistle , a compass, lighter, duct tape , packing tape, scissors, and a small toolkit, mini candy bars to give as tips. Watch the opening of, Then Came Bronson, an old tv show ,I am not into cycles but , I love they way he explored.Happy trails to you. Cheers Joseph

I was thinking to spend most of my time using the subway but, what about buses or walking around night time? I've seen few bars and restaurants I'd like to pop in, will it be safe being solo? As the man said... GO! Go alone, go solo, or go by yourself... it doesn't matter! Just go! Because in addition to being the city that never sleeps... New York is also the city that never leaves you feeling "lonely"! There's always someone to help when you need it (yes, New York'ers ARE friendly)... but if for some reason you really do want to be left alone most New York'ers will gladly respect your wishes! After all, there are 1,664,999 other people in just Manhattan that might need to ask directions or help buying a Metro ticket! But the moment you really realise New York will never "leave you alone" is when weeks or months after your trip you find yourself smiling as a fond memory of NYC taps you on the shoulder and say's... "Hey, remember when..." :-)

I visited NYC by myself in 2018. Best vacation ever. No compromises, everyone is too busy to judge.. easier to get resturant tables... also there are plenty of hostels with social areas to meet people or even use eventbrite or meetup to find people. I went to see a movie at 10am and was the only one in the theatre.

The majority of my trips to NYC have been solo. It’s honestly the best way to experience the city for the first time. Unless you’re with one other person that is a great traveler and won’t “bug” you or put a damper on anything. Lots of places have specific maps that you can get that will show the “highlights” like Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the Garden, Yankee stadium, etc, and also includes an overlay of the subway system so that you can see exactly what train you need to take and how many blocks you need to walk. If you’re concerned about safety, don’t be, there are cops all over the place and plenty of 24 hour businesses that you can go into if you’re feeling insafe or need help.

I went to NYC solo in August 2017, and had the best WEEK OF MY LIFE! It was the most freeing and liberating experience I've had. I want to back SOLO again! 🤗
My suggestion is to take time to research a few tour books, and You Tube videos. Plan a few must see places, but keep an open mind, and be willing to wander. Also determine where you will want to stay. I stayed at a great historic
B & B in Chelsea which was central for most of the city. (Unfortunately the Inn has closed and the building was sold ☹️).
I lucked out with the weather, was mid August, and wore shorts the entire week. Mid 80's and nice. Wouldn't mind trying late Spring or early Fall, but prefer not to have to layer up the clothing or deal with bad weather.
Final tip... plan at least 4 FULL days!
You only live once... just do it! 😀

Any updated advice for 2023? I know this video is 3 years old, but I hear so many bad things in the news that I have a ton of anxiety coming to the city solo. I've been coming to the city lately via car, and haven't had any bad experiences. But mostly because I stuck to one general area. The other day I finally took the express bus to the city, and walked and citibiked a large area. Although I was nervous of getting robbed or something horrible, I didn't have any problems. No one bothered me and I only encountered friendly people. That put my anxiety at ease a little but I'm still nervous because of the increased crimes, and I walk around with my RUclips camera equipment strapped and exposed outside of my backpack.

New York is one of the best places to travel solo. I've done it many times. You didn't mention using the MTA subway, and or buses. For the best experience, I highly recommend to people to learn how to use it ahead of time. I used to walk insane distances because I was intimated by the subway. The directions didn't make any sense to me. So later, I made the effort to learn the lines (RUclips is the best), so now when I go, I take the subway as much as possible. == Reference some of your other videos, people new to NYC need to be familiar with scams . If someone is overly friendly or "helpful" when you don't need it -- move away. Don't be overly trusting - same in any big city. -- the city I live in, too. --- I definitely agree about walking tours. I don't know about free ones, but they don't tend to be expensive. At least the ones I've been on. Always factor in a few bucks for tips for the tour guides!

I visit NYC twice each year solo. Last year I added a trip with my wife and daughter. We had a blast! But solo is excellent. My hobby is photography, and over the years I've done lots of street photography in the city, along with a couple scheduled fashion shoots. On an earlier trip I went to the Elevated Acre, and it was great! New Yorkers are nice people. :D Will I do it again? I've already got my bus ticket from DC and my hotel reservation in midtown for an upcoming long weekend. I walk (roughly 10 miles a day), take the subway (The BEST way to get around the city, including the outer boroughs), and occasionally even use the bus if I'm interested in Manhattan views from NJ. I've visited lots of cities, including San Francisco and Sydney, and there's nothing like NYC.

I didn’t even know this was a concern some had. I’d imagine crime would’ve been the primary concern, but so long as you keep to yourself in the tougher bits of town, you’ll be fine. I travel solo all the time and the only thing I miss sometimes is just sharing the experience with a friend.
If you want to go somewhere and nobody else really wants to tag along, don’t let that hold you back. Be smart, stay safe, and enjoy yourself!

Went a few years ago on my own and loved it. My main purpose was photography and food and since I was on my own, I could easily make plans and then change them on the fly because of how I felt at that particular time or weather-related issues and not have to ask or check with other people I'm traveling with. I always find that I'm able to find more photo opportunities when I'm on my own because I'm just really focused on that and not in a conversation with someone. Sure I love having friends around so I travel with friends and then right after that, I'll plan a trip just for myself. There are so many resources to help you plan it if you're nervous and a lot of it involves youtube in the form of vlogs, tip videos, etc and of course blogs online and other sites.

Well, it depends. As long as you're street-smart - know how to spot tourist traps in Times Square - and ask questions if you're lost, you'll be fine. Make sure to ask a MTA employee/NYPD if you are. They're happy to help.

I live in Philadelphia. I have traveled frequently to NYC. One of the advantages of Philly is its proximity to NY. I would say a majority of the times I have gone to NY it has been solo (except for two year period when I had a boyfriend that lived in Manhattan). It is nice to go with someone but I really prefer to go by myself because of the freedom it offers me. Many people have a complex about traveling alone. They think that there is something wrong with them if they travel solo. Not the case at all.

I went to NYC by myself when I turned 40. I was tired of not going anywhere just because I was single. I had the best time I have ever had doing anything. Do IT. After that, I was also brave enough to take my kids on vacation as a single parent. Traveling alone is freeing.

What a great spot in the city you've just unveiled for us, the ones who dream of going to NYC by themselves. Unlike the Vessel, which looks as empty as its design, this place seems so cozy and soothing in the middle of the concrete jungle that it's as if you're dreaming,... almost unreal! Dont know how you do it, but your vids always leave me so enthusiastic and craving for more, like "ok dude, let's pack and get away out of here right to New York". Thousands thx Jon for let us dreaming....

Anyway to keep this short it was the best experience ever, I walked the length and breath of Manhattan, went to games, shows, museums, etc. Loved it so much I usually get back every year but normally with a friend. They are always amazed at how well I know the city and its all because of that first trip

Yea i stayed in an airbnb in New Jersey so save money on the accomodation, altough you need to buy a pass for the PATH train which brings you to Manhattan which is around $30-$35 for a 7 day-pass but it saved me way more in accomodation so, and the PATH also drives the entire night so it was just as much of a pleasure as using the NY subway ☺️ Another alternative is an airbnb in brooklyn but i dont have any experience with that

One place I would recommend to Broadway fans- Marie’s Crisis Center in the Village. Trust me! Research it. You may want to show it in a video. Or not. It’s rather fun to keep some places secret.

I have traveled to NYC 1-2x per year since my first trip in 2011, and at least half of my trips have been solo. The more established you and your friends get in your careers, the harder it is to coordinate schedules, and I'm not going to miss an opportunity to visit my favorite city because no one is available to come with me. My experience has been that New Yorkers are the friendliest people and you're more likely to make new friends if you're travelling alone. I love trying new restaurants by myself and sitting at the bar.
On a personal note, I would love to see a living in the five boroughs vs. commuting from New Jersey comparison video. My company has a New York office, so moving to New York is a possible option I would like to pursue in the future.

I travel to New York alone a lot and I still have a great time. I take tours, go to museums, visit many places. You can have fun going solo in New York. On one of the tours I went on, I helped one of the tour guests find their subway (which happened to be the same subway I was taking) after the tour and we ended up having a really nice conversation. Also, I find that I have more time to explore things when I go solo. ☺

So I am a resident here in NYC, one of the things I do here in NYC is that I'm an avid illustrator and I like drawing landscapes I observe and sketch them out. The reason why I'm here in this video is for me to keep busy as a college kid closer to the financial district which my university is in the Tribeca area. I love my city too, but with all the security concerns and problems around I don't want to look around the city the other way around. Even as a artist I'm still trying to get recognition and jobs out there. Not many of the jobs around here does have a good position for me to be in. I also live with an family that I also have two of the visas of being Japanese and American citizen. It troubles me living currently, however I must say that without an word of Makoto Shinkai (the animated director who developed Your Name and Weathering With You) said something about making your boring life into something beautiful.
