You're not missing anything OP. It's just a basic reminder/task tool, that at best can initiate a one-shot prompt without supervision. It's rarely a good idea to actually let ChatGPT do anything unsupervised though, making this feature questionable with limited utility.

No notifications. I dont understand how it's supposed to help. Im not logged into a desktop 24/7. We need mobile push notifications. Also, no email notifications are working.
This gives me an opportunity to think about what it is I can automate in Y life. News, crypto alerts, video posting. This is awesome and I’m glad to be apart of it.
I tried it to get the latest news updates about specific things related to my work. I enabled browsing, and it provided me with 1-2 months old news... Far from useful atm.
I asked ChatGPT if it has access to real-time data. It told me , no, it does not. Neither in the free version, or the paid version. Totally useless for what I want to do.
Everything I've asked it to do, says it can't (its no longer in beta)... but heck my calender can do everything else... so far dont see much use for it
Chatgpt was doing something similar for me 2 months ago. I started a project, and it was telling me to check back for updates on the project. I was also giving directives and time-frame, and it was agreeing and meeting deadlines. Crazy

I always appreciate innovation. What if the pre-scheduled task needs to be cancelled or changed at the last minute and you’re offline, unawares? These automations can only go so far, but these ideas are really cool even in these beginning stages.

The people entering the prompts are. Over the next few years, I expect that to be a big thing. You won't really need senior software developers, for example, you'll need people that are good at writing prompts into an LLM. In that example, software experience will be helpful, so (some) programmers will probably keep their job for a little while just to babysit the AI. But eventually the AI will be able to ask the right questions so that no technical knowledge is needed.

Insane? Respectfully disagree. This feature isn't much different to old-school reminder/tasks that we've had since forever. The main difference here is that you're trusting ChatGPT to generate an output without step-by-step supervision. That's actually a big weakness with this, since the quality of outputs is almost never optimal without some iteration. That might not bother garbage in, garbage out users, but those who aim for refined quality outputs likely won't be satisfied with what ChatGPT spits out of the tasks. Very simple tasks might be fine, but then you probably don't need gen AI for those. Either way, this feature isn't that useful.
Hey, Yeah, I wanted to comment the same thing. I set up two tasks yesterday. One didn't work at all, and when I prompted it what went wrong, it had no idea. The second task, however did work partially. It emailed me instead of a push-notification. The results were also sub-par but interesting to see that it was able to email me. It may take some adjustment.

Just tell it to make and publish automated AI videos, documents and media for all platforms by using others videos. It will use all the things it needs and you can then go rest on a beach and count the money. Unless others do this and saturate the market.
