  • 2021 see's the much anticipated launch of the BMW R 1250 RT. This update brings the popular Sports Tourer up to date with BMW's superb 1250 boxer engine equipped with shift-cam technology, giving the R1250RT more bang through the rev range.
    The new BMW R1250RT comes equipped with radar adaptive cruise control which, contrary to my initial scepticism, is actually really good and I can definitely see it being of use on long motorway slogs across big miles. The huge 10.5" LCD display now offers full integration with the BMW connected app, and the R 1250 RT even offers wireless charging of your phone via a convenient weatherproof holder.
    So is this the complete Sports Tourer to rival the mighty Honda Goldwing?
    Hope you enjoy the vid folks, keep SUBSCRIBING, keep SHARING, keep LIKING, and keep letting me know what you think in the COMMENTS section below!

      Yeah it is a difficult one between the GS/GSA and the RT - both fantastic road machines.
      For me personally, the GS wins it as I feel it’s a bit more flickable for the tighter stuff for how I rode personally. The RT is an incredibly agile bike, especially for its proportions, but I like the styling of the GS more.
      Plus I like the image the GS has, there’s nothing more satisfying than going around the outside of a flyboy on a tractor 😉😂👍

    This was a great bike, 2014-2020. The reason so many complain about 2021+ is because the TFT and nav are overly complicated and unreliable. I spent a week on this bike, considering it as a replacement for my 2015 RT and decided to keep my current bike, mainly because of the new TFT screen, convoluted menu navigation, and the dependency of the navigation system on my phone. If your phone doesn't support wireless charging (needs a charger cable) or is in a case, it probably won't fit in the compartment designed for it. My 2015 has a Garmin-based Motorrad GPS that works independent of my phone or a cell signal. In my view this bike was designed by engineers who don't ride, or who spend a lot more time on their phone than their bike. Buy a 2014-2020 well-maintain, used model, and save yourself a lot of money and grief.

I don’t understand why BMW have made the heated grip and seat bit so difficult, but then give the pillion a simple toggle switch. Quite like the idea of the pre-set buttons even if they do look like a bit of an after thought.

    Great Vlog Bruce. With my name I too have been waiting for some reviews on the 2021 version. So for you an avid GS fan, could you see yourself with one of these instead? If not why not? Hope they give you and TMF a long-termer soon! Live your life pal! (Love that road southbound to Alresford that you were on, one of my favourites!)

      No I’d keep the GS - it feels more flickable to me, I love the utilitarian nature of the tractor - you can literally take it anywhere, I actually like the look of it, and I like the fact people expect you to be a certain type of rider when they see you on one, and I like to see their faces when they realise that’s not me.

    Your 'plug' for the UltimateAddOn clamp struck home, Bruce. As the owner of a 2017, R1200RT, my biggest gripe of 1200/1250RT reviews is no mention is made of how difficult it is to mount anything on these motorcycles. It is so bad BMW now offers Tubular Handlebars (a US$275 upgrade), to make it easier to mount accessories. Talk about being designed by people who don't ride. I am going to be in Glasgow in September and may well have one of the clamps sent to my friends house.

    As a rider of almost 52 years (and still persisting despite my body) I have to say, life on two wheels for most is a series of ‘stages’ - a bit like life itself really. With apologies to the Seekers , “To everything there is a season - and a time to every purpose, under heaven”. That’s why, amongst many other things, Motorcycle Reviews are totally ‘subjective’. Different things suit different people for different reasons at their various stages of life/motorcycling/circumstances etc. I feel blessed at 72 years of age and having owned around 40 different types and brands motorcycles, that I am ‘still here’ for one, and still riding, for another and still looking at my ‘next motorcycle’ 😜. Ride what suits when it suits and never criticise the choices others might make, be it right or wrong, it’s up to them to review and rectify if necessary. It’s been a long and wonderful road. Cheers 👍🤩

      A bit harsh that comment, just because Africa Twins/ GS are not your cup of tea, people buy things because they just like the look of them, like rugged looking 4x4's to use as an everyday car and not an offrode farm tool, we are all entitled to have our own tastes without being labelled a 'twat' for doing so, if we were all the same stuff would be pretty boring.

    • @gasdive
      @gasdive 3 года назад +2

      I've always thought this is the right market for electrics. You could fit a lot of batteries in there and that wave of endless torque... Build it with CCS and job done.

    • @markgr1nyer

      @@gasdive If they can get hold of the Tesla batteries range shouldn't be a problem either.

    • @gasdive
      @gasdive 3 года назад +2

      @@markgr1nyer I don't think Tesla will be selling batteries any time soon.
      But BMW makes the i3. 2/3 of an i3 pack is 33 kWh and would weigh 179 kg. That leaves 100 kg for a rolling chassis, motor, controller and fairing. It would be tight, but maybe doable? No more than a 20 kg penalty compared to the petrol bike.
      The K1 had a drag coefficient of 0.34, about 1/3 of a Zero. If they could get the electric RT to 0.5 (which they should) and it was 20% bigger frontal area than a Zero, it should use about 2/3 the energy per mile. Or in other words, go 50% further per kWh. The big battery Zero, with the extra battery has about 16.5 kWh of usable energy and goes 112 miles at 70 mph. So with double the energy and 50% more miles per kWh it should go 3 times that. 336 miles on a charge on the highway. That's a good 4+ hours riding. With CCS, stop for a break for half an hour and you'll have another 240 miles range added.
      That's a no compromise super touring bike right there. 500 mile days with one stop.

    • @markgr1nyer
      @markgr1nyer 3 года назад +1

      @@gasdive that would be incredible. Put the bulk of the battery pack low down in an L shape with the motor in the cut out of the L (from a square) to keep a very low center of gravity would work a treat. Hopefully someone at bmw mottorad R&D is reading this.

I get that you didn’t like it but then you’re a much taller chap and I can see the gsa or even the RT suiting you better. For us shorties, the RS with flip up screen, wider bars and luggage is the perfect all rounder we can flatfoot.

    I used to own the 2012 version and loved it. Not sure about the new TFT / Satnav screen, Looks a bit bland in its basic mode. I would like BMW to allow downloads of different screen layouts. But i suppose eventually those will be on all models. Considering how big it is this bike is very flickable. I never had a problem going through London traffic.
