  • Spring Vlog: Planting Season Begins! | Farming Adventures in Southern Iowa!
Spring has sprung and it's time to get in the field! We have a little over 100 acres of oats to plant in this video. We rent a drill from the local NRCS office to get it done but not without a little trouble along the way!
We also get a delivery from Koch Agronomic Services! This year we will be trying out PROTIVATE this year - the hope being we can get our crops the critical nutrients required to promote early, uniform emergence and the flowability needed for all our planters.
Check it out here - getgreatergrow...

iowANFarmer, Ben Van Roekel, is a 2nd generation farmer in southern Iowa. His goal on RUclips is to showcase what young farmers have to offer to the agricultural community. He hopes to give the general public a glimpse into what life is like on an American corn, soybean, and hay operation. The channel will focus on farming equipment, repairs, precision ag, and daily operations on the farm. Join him in his daily trials and tribulations in the changing agricultural environment.

Going to Precision Planting meetings in the past, the presenter agreed that stale seedbeds were often the nicest to plant. Having been rained on, and settled down, they generally have consistent moisture and are easy to set the planter for depth, down pressure, etc...

Had good luck seeding oats by taking them into the co-op and have them added to the fertilizer and put on with an air machine and then working in with a field cultivator

Do you only plant corn into a stail seed bed? Or corn and soybeans? Im assuming you woukd do it with a row crop planter instead of a drill for soybeans. We do 15" row beans. Seem to harvest better than han drilled beans

Was wondering why not seed the alfalfa with the oats? I see it had a small seed box. In my experience we have seeded them together at the same time and it has worked great. Just have to swath the oats and use what i call a dummy head that has belts that pick up the swaths and feed them into the combine
