RIP Maurice Hines (December 13, 1943 - December 29, 2023), aged 80 And RIP Gregory Hines (February 14, 1946 - August 9, 2003), aged 57 You both will be remembered as legends.
These two were just fascinating in this movie when it came out in 1984 !!! From the costumes to the beautiful music !! I went out and bought the soundtrack album !!! RIP Mr. Hines 🙏🏽
Gregory was a superb role model, great personality and a stylish dancer and actor. He is greatly missed. A talent to behold and keep his legacy alive for the younger generation.
Took karate with him in 1969. He was of course a black belt who could do it all with ease because he was a great dancer. Very nice guy in his early 20s.
They make something look easy which is decidedly not. I love to dance, and have won awards, but we all bow down to the masters and learn from them. These are two such people.
Word. Same here. I put my national dance awards down to the excellence of dancers like the Hines bros…. Beautiful dancers that will be inspiring forever
Am I the only person who LOVED White Nights?? I had never heard of Gregory Hines and only went to see the movie to see Baryshnikov dance but WOW, this other guy-I thought about the dancing in that film weeks afterward...RIP Gregory and Maurice.
I first saw Gregory and Maurice Hines perform on "The Johnny Carson Show". Their act was billed as "Hines, Hines, and Dad". They played musical instruments, danced, and sang. It was a quality performance.
Fun fact: the late awesome Johnny Brown aka "Bookman" from "Good Times" was briefly part of a trio with the dancing Hines Brothers, Maurice and Gregory, as a replacement for their dad. Hines, Hines and Brown performed on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1963 and 1964. He sang and danced. Videos are available on RUclips. R.l.P. giants.
This movie was about 2 hours 20 minutes and it could have been another 30 minutes longer,,,a pleasure to watch... too bad it didn`t do well at the box office
A client gave me tickets he couldn't use, I knew about the play but didn't give it much thought. well when the usher wall us down on the main floor he kept going and we were center stage 7 rows from the front . I couldn't believe the luck, then about 5 mins later I hear some buzz and I see this group of people. It was Sammy Davis Jr all deck out and sat right in front of me, so cool. He was here to see the last performance of the Hines Bros together. with the count's big band and the dancing was an experience I will never forget. To be that close to tap dancers of that level was thrill
Elaine S They were at their best, many show stopping moments, having fun making it look so effortless. I lived only 3 blocks from the theater district so I have seen some outstanding shows.
RIP Nicolas Brothers! You two was a pleasure to watch.Your dancing, Your choreography, your skill and your Love for one another was so refreshing and Beautiful. Love You Both!
@@wendyflorin48 I agree. Maurice is more "classic", for lack or a better word-there's a weightlessness to his style-where Gregory's style is more into the floor and grittier. I love them both.
This right Here is the Ultimate in Black History on the Tap Dance Level. Maurice Hines is the Most underrated Tap/Dance Master in History, and it's a Damn Shame!!! They have New Footage out there now from this Movie that was never seen. This fact alone should be explored!!!! This Movie is Classic on Many Levels.......Please know this!!!!
R.I.P. to Maurice Hines, big brother of Gregory Hines. Always saddens me when we lose one of ours. I pray he and Gregory are together in Abraham’s Bosom.

Maurice and Gregory did a night club act with their father called Hines, Hines & Dad. when they were young their father played the drums. They appeared on the Tonight Show with him a few times too.

I AQUIRED 2 PAIRS OF RED TAP DANCING SHOES THAT HAD BELONGED TO THE HINES BROTHERS THAT HAD BEEN DONATED TO THE SALVATION ARMY IN VAN NUYS CALIFORNIA .. THEY WERE 1/2 SIZE DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHER BUT THEY BOTH FIT ME OK .... I KNOW BECAUSE THEIR NAMES WERE IN THE SHOES
They didn’t dance together after this. Then Gregory passed away. I’ve always wondered how his brother felt after Gregory’s death. Did they ever reconcile?
I still think Maurice had a better command of what classical tap dance (light on your feet and smooth) has been. I prefer that. But I could never not watch Gregory tap given any chance
Dancing together in heaven now!❤🙏🏽

@@stellarocquie7957 And so charismatic.
I love when the brothers tap together. Love Gregory. And his brother too. Rip. Gregory. I hope Gregory and his brother made peace.
What talent, they were incredible.
The brothers dancing together was my favorite part of the movie, especially the reunion scene later in the movie.

I hate how Maurice wasn't as famous as Gregory for his talents.

There's certain scenes in Cotton Club that are my favorites and this definitely is one of them.
I was foutunate to see their last performance together in 78 , they performed in Sophisticated Ladies and sat right behind sammy Davis Jr very cool
Tell me more.... Please

Sophisticated Ladies ran from '81 to '83, with Maurice joining the cast closer to the end.
I didn’t realize they was brothers for real. Both a great talent
Frankly, this iconic tap dance scene is the only reason to see "The Cotton Club". R.I.P. Maurice Hines...

that's Gregory and Maurice Hines...
The definition of STYLE, GRACE, AND ELEGANCE!
And don't forget CLASS !!!
Best of all time. R.I.P.
Together again ! RIP Maurice🌹
Gregory is the more famous one, but every routine I've seen him do with his brother Maurice he seems to be the one more smooth & suave with his moves
Brandon Foster Facts, his brother was the dancer. Gregory was the actor.
Brandon Foster They have very different approaches and styles.

Maurice did a TedTalk in 2019 commemorating a Black History Month U.S. Postage stamp with Gregory's picture on it. I hope you can find it.
