The top poles just slide into each other. One has a smaller diameter end. If you look at the top fence posts on the store, you can see the difference. We cut that small end off one of the poles to have the same diameter on both outside ends.
The poles have male and female ends. We keep the female end on one and chop off the other to get the length down. When you put them up we just slide the m/f together and then hang on the tripod.

The T-nuts - just put the bolt though the hole you drilled, then thread the T-nut on. Once you tighten the bolt it pulls the T-nut into the wood.
