On my first Stygian try, at week 7 on a short scout quest, all 4 heroes of my party got afflicted, and began a negative feedback loop of stressing after ONE HIT from a maggot, and then all died of heart attack one by one (without a single death's door check). Rage quit is an understatement.
Happened to me today. Ended a difficult fight with all of my party with high stress and a helion on death's door + bleeding. Helion dies from bleeding two steps further, triggers a chain of hearth attacks that wipes my whole party
Not to brag, but I finally attempted and beat Stygian about a week ago. Honestly, I think the best tip in this video is knowing the final party composition. Simply knowing what groups you're going to run in the Darkest Dungeon assaults does help in so many ways (knowing what heroes to take from the stagecoach, knowing what trinkets you're going to need, what skills to buy, etc). So, this a long way of thanking you!
I am at 60+ week in Darkest mode, only lost 3 level one heroes and one vestal level five (because shambler lol). I would recommend the use of blight and bleed resist trinkets, like Blood Charm, Ethereal Crucifix, Fortifying Garlic and my favorite one is Cleansing Crystals. I never spent gold in bandages and antivenom, but for activate curios.
Those are some useful tips. I have a bad habit of buying more supplies than I need and am not great at stress management, since I rely on treatment facilities between missions. I tried Stygian once before losing too many heroes, and while I'm not sure if I try it again, I'll take this advice into account if I do.
btw you can edit it to any number you want in dlc>crismon court> features > shared > rules.json I honestly prefer blood mon to mostly limit deaths rather than time, You can't skip weeks anyway with death limit
That is correct, but even if you keep the town abuzz, if you manage to lose only 9 heroes at max and beat it within 86 weeks, then you are pretty much playing the original Stygian mode but with flagellant and districts active
I just finished a Stygian run with Crimson Court activated, and I realised, besides the higher death and weeks cap, it might actually be an advantage, because you don't get any unexpected town events like Wulf or the Shrieker. You just have 'the town is abuzz' all the time, which is predictable and managable. In retrospect I would've preferred to turn it off, simply to get more out of the game with the random events, but I believe it might actually be easier this way.
It is an interesting idea if you do not mind the town abuzz event. I didn;t mind the 86 weeks, but getting more weeks would not be bad and especially more deaths. Thank you for sharing!
I always bring resolve 0's and sometimes a single high character (to guarantee that I get through alive) though doing that will usually make you miss out on the quirk unless my high resolve character is the only one or one of the only ones left.
Funny enough, That is the correct pronunciation. "Stih-Jee-En". If you have heard it differently, Then those folks are mispronouncing it. It's kinda hilarious, because the word Stygian literally means "Very Dark". So the difficulties are essentially: -"Alotta Light" -"Darkest" -"Very Dark". Lol.

These are great tips and very valuable. The one I really struggle with is identifying my parties for the final DDs and that's something I must try to do for my next run. Just random thoughts (some of which I have probably added to other videos, so sorry if you've heard these before): I think it's ok to over-provision for the first 5-10 weeks. Tbh, Stygian is such a crap shoot in the very early game in terms of the classes you get and dungeon layouts. Getting through this period can be among the hardest part of the game and I just restart if I get my 0-lvl characters wasted by spiders. The town events Bumper Crop and Caregivers Convention are really useful, saving a ton of money. Removing and locking in traits in a single turn is amazing. If a medium run is going really well, save the campfire til right at the end, that way you can remove stress, use the PD's ability to remove disease, get trinkets via the Anquitarian etc. Overall, it's a shame that a flawless run can be derailed by bad RNG in one of the DDs, which is very possible, and that the bosses are totally pointless. I hope they fix this for the next game. Thanks for this really enjoyable playthrough and all the ideas along the way.
Great tips too! Caregivers Convention is always on my radar especially in higher resolve levels. Saving campfires is great, you can also remove so much stress with some of the pro/con abilities (like Revel and Quarantine) without worrying about debuffs. Agree with the bosses too... most totally skip.
First tried my run of stygian last week. Did not enjoy taking upwards of 3+ crits in a row at times, but hey I made it! Demon's cauldron occultist was my personal MVP as I ran one in as many dungeons as I could. I favored multiple houndmasters over a lot of other damage characters/as an alternative to stun for occultist if I didn't have one available. One Man-at-arms was also all that was need to tech in for certain fights and dungeons. It also pissed me off that I shambler hunted for about a quarter of all the weeks I played (about 70 weeks total so about 17/18 weeks) and ancestor's map came on the last kill (which also had to be on medium dungeons as opposed to just apprentice dungeons). This annoyed me because I had to use an extra trinket slot for scouting on a different character, for even more weeks than just when shambler hunting, when I could have itemized for more offense or defensive, but hey, ultimately it's worth it to not be surprised and to have info on the dungeon. Stuns (and especially double stuns) are your best friend, and they mitigated more damage than any defensive mechanic in the game. Overall, in my opinion, the difficulty of stygian is quite managable until you just randomly start getting crited over and over again, which leads to it being not as satisfying as I thought beating it would be, but DD is still just a fun game that it makes it worth it anyways.
@@HiDdeNSQuiDZGaming I appreciate the guides you have put out. They definitely made me more aware about how to approach certain encounters, so thanks a bunch for that!
another tipp: the shambler is not worth it always. I did one with level 5s and i didnt even get an ancestral ,just gold and a normal trinket..lost 2 on that run later too.
Maybe because you already owned all the ancestral trinkets, maybe certain trinkets are limited to certain dungeons. I have done only 3 shamblers at apprentice and veteran levels in my current run, so I can't say much about champion. But I must agree as some powerful ones like the pen and the map can sometimes pop up as long dungeon's rewards, which are sure a lot safer to get than entering some nightmarish disco fights.
If crimson court is activated you should get 100 weeks to complete the game. You still need to beat dd only. Once you do death penalty and time limit is removed
@Grey Knight Thank you for the correction! Regarding whether to keep the crimson court on or not, I was thinking more along the lines of a first time Stygian player. The town is abuzz event, may eventually tempt someone to start the crimson court just to get it out of the way. This is when a slippery slope begins of managing the crimson curse, the enemies from there, and the time limit. This can all start around the harder to the hardest part of the stygian run as well! If you are experienced I think leaving it on should not hurt. Also, I believe the town is abuzz event will pop up rather frequently thus it may suppress other good events that could help you along the way.
