Mike thank you for all the special videos and knowledge that you give for free to any who seek the wisdom. Myself I recently a month ago found my dream unmolested Cobra 2000 unit for $100 and having a counter issue. I just heard the amazing 2017 new years eve skip earlier tonight and rewatched your unstick meter video. My meters are swinging now and go back to zero and rest. I am happy, thank you for sharing your wisdom for those who seek it or want to learn. This counter video has sweet clarity and detail. I am not as scared now to investigate more or know if I am sending a pro technician a good radio or junker 😂. Happy new year
First thing to check that gets a lot of people is don't forget there is a AC/DC power selection switch on the back of the radio. If you have it plugged into the wall outlet make sure it's in AC. I don't have enough fingers to count how many times that has been all that was wrong. Also, those switch's rarely get moved so slide it back and forth a few times to clean it's contacts. I have seen them become intermittent connections because they became slightly oxidized.
@@mikesradiorepair I'll be damned! You're right. It had been 30 years since I had owned a radio just like it and wasn't even aware of that switch back then! Now I need to find a mic that fits it. I paid $40 for two big boxes of radios, Palomar linears and misc. stuff. The other radio is a 142 GTL I think. Haven't brought all of it home yet. Thanks for the info!
Hello mike. I’m wondering if you would sale a kit of all the parts you show in this video? I’m Looking to recap mine but would rather get the parts from you.
What's curious is that I got the digits to come on by putting a diode there... but no counting. I know it's there because jiggling the buttons causes the seconds to flash. I have to be doing something wrong. Must... study... schematic... :)
+MikesRadioRepair That was it. Damn I am getting too old. Can't even set a friggin clock :) It does work once you set the clock. As if the thing staying on 12:00 wasn't clue enough that it was not telling time. I win the 'duh' award today.
Very interesting teardown, but I will say I would sub, but your handheld video work is nauseating, sorry, but it is, what it is. Thanks for sharing though.

Good job on the FC board. Man I wish I had a dollar for every one of these folks had damaged. Traces ripped right off. Nice tip on the seconds also ;)
Yeah I have seen plenty destroyed by people that have never worked on double sided boards.
Thank you Mike. That is an excellent trick!
Thanks for showing us that tric
Good job! "thumbs up" worthy.
awesome ,never knew about that conversion
And best of all cheap and simple.
Mike, im wondering if you would repair mine if i send it to you??
they are a pain good job
What is the reference number for those mustard drop capacitors? What do I look for in the service manual
If you mean tantalum capacitors the BOM should list them as just that, tantalum capacitors.
@@mikesradiorepair sorry I meant the diodes. The little blue ones that you replaced the yellow ones
I just acquired an old Cobra 2000 GTL that won't light up at all. Any suggestions? Power supply bad? Fuse is ok.

Mike is there a mod to change the clock to 50 hz?
Not that I know of.

I do not do retail sales, repairs only. You can get parts from any of the big suppliers. Allied, Newark, Digi-Key, etc...

Ok thank you sir! I’ll start getting a list together.
through the magic of editing that job took you a second but, how long did everything replaced take?
Desoldering, replacing, resoldering and cleaning probably 10 minutes or so.

When you power up the radio it defults to 12:00 and does not start counting time until you press the set button.
