Lip is one of those amazing Nintendo characters that are unknown because their concept is just "too japanese for overseas audiences" (same with DeMille from Tomato Adventure, the spiritual predecesor of Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga), and not because their games were bad. Panel de Pon is considered a masterpiece among puzzle games. Which is why I say: Lip for SSB!!! The world has to know the original character of the game we knew as Tetris Attack!!
Lip is not “Too Japanese”. Panel De Pon really reminds me of Rainbow Brite and My Little Pony. Too “girly” is probably the thing they were shying away from. This was the day where Nintendo was dealing with a “kiddy” image problem in the West, and releasing a cute fairy game wouldn’t help at all.
PsychoJosh Erm... Furil IS Lip. Furil and Lip are literally the same character. Furil is just the alternate/Japanese-exclusive name for Lip. Like how Yossy is the same character as Yoshi. “Furil” even uses the “Lip’s Stick” wand in this game. The pun wouldn’t work if it was called “Furil’s Stick”. So... yeah. Furil and Lip are one and the same.
The original Panel de Pon was NEVER released overseas despite the replacement of characters (Tetris Attack and Pokemon Puzzle League 64) because they afraid that the characters and theme made it too girly for hardcore puzzle gamers. So they thought it was best that it's stayed that way, despite some mention from Super Smash Bros series.
It is finally past due that Panel De Pon to be released overseas (complete with *product tie-ins) *A Manga Series, A Board Game and a Hand Held version
Hi there! I'm assisting with a translation patch for this version of Panel de Pon, and your videos are helping tremendously with figuring out the context of the dialogue we've extracted so far. Would you like me to send you the link to the final product, whenever it's finished? Regardless, thanks a bunch for the videos :)
@Lady Lyndis Is it too late to ask for it, as well? I mean, I don’t have the game, physical or otherwise, but I really want to know what they added to the story and what the characters are saying. This game is cute.
Except for one detail, these *Panel de Pon Girls came long before the Puzzle League and the League itself and Yoshi's Tetris Attack would not have existed if those *Girls didn't exist either.
This game was released to the US at the time as Tetris Attack. Is basically a good re-skin of the game. So I wouldn't say they were cheap. On the contrary, they invested in changing the story, music and characters to something they felt would be more relatable to US gamers of the time.
So basically they wasted money on stuff that wasn't necessary and because it had Tetris in the name but isn't actually a Tetris game, it prevents it from being released on Virtual Console.
@@otaking3582 After Tetris Attack released outside Japan, Nintendo eventually re-released it for the Super Famicom add-on, the Satelaview. It was now called Yoshi's Panepon, or something similar to that. I'm not sure if the game kept in the "inspired by Tetris" text.
I am shocked at how fast you dispatched the CPU. I can't even go that fast. (I am using the only Panel de Pon game I played, Pokémon Puzzle League as an example here. ). the last stages always manage to get the drop on me. One move, I lose. i'm too slow or something worse to play efficiently.
@mistoroboto That's EXACTLY what I just said. I didn't said anything about them being cheap, it's just that the characters and set where too girly. So it was OBVIOUS that they replace them with characters from more familiar Nintendo francises.
“Too girly” Well... doesn’t seem like that stopped them from releasing Panel De Pon on the Switch Online’s SNES collection. And everybody seems to love Lip and friends! (As they should. I, myself, adore Lip.)
Gamer Luna My waifu? Probably not. I’m not exactly into the whole “Waifu” idea. But if there’s a plushie of Furil, would I buy it in a heartbeat? Abso-God-dang-lutely.
That is not true. There isn't much emphasis on the girls themselves, and there isn't any fanservice. The girls featured in the game aren't even scantily clad, they all wear short dresses which reveal nothing risque.
She’s both. Lip and Furil are one and the same. They aren’t separate characters. Actually, I just realized... I considered Lip’s last name to be “Panepon” (Essentially, someone slurring the name “Panel De Pon” into one word), making her name “Lip Panepon”, but if that’s the case... maybe her middle name is Furil, going off of evidence I’ve put together, meaning I think Lip’s full name is “Lip Furil Panepon”. Or maybe I’m just making stuff up.
Remember back when puzzle games were creative and different instead of all being Candy Crush clones?
I think Bejeweled clones is more accurate.
You forgot Puzzle Bobble clones as well. But then again, that's not actually a "block puzzle".
Chuzzle is pretty dang good.
i realize I am quite randomly asking but does anybody know a good place to watch new series online?
@Memphis River Flixportal :)

PsychoJosh Nah, her Japanese name is actually Sash Lilac.
Why can’t every video game be as adorable as this?
due to small sprites it was originally a nintendo 64 game

Yea, or else it would of ended in the (Games for Girls Section) and it wouldn't even sell well here in the states.

+Lady Lyndis I would like a link as well!
4 years later - but yes. Please :)

Is that offer for translation still up? Im learning Japanese, I'm a beginner but I can try.
If this Puzzle Collection could be released outside Japan, I'm afraid Panel de Pon would be reskinned to a Pokemon Puzzle League game
To be fair, I think this is basically a reskinned Pokemon Puzzle League.
That's literally what happened. When US localizers got a hold of the source code for this game, specifically.
DJ Oshawott Yup. They re-used PPL’s engine for the Panel De Pon remake.
Except for one detail, these *Panel de Pon Girls came long before the Puzzle League and the League itself and Yoshi's Tetris Attack would not have existed if those *Girls didn't exist either.

The one in the nintendo puzzle collection is based on a cancelled Panel de pon on 64, that was realeased in the west as Pokemon puzzle league.

What do you like about Furil/Lip?
- She’s Furil.
- She’s kind hearted
- She’s freaking adorable
- She’s Furil, okay?
Etc. Etc. Etc.
Well, Jac-Man 9999, I think she’s my waifu.
Gamer Luna
My waifu? Probably not. I’m not exactly into the whole “Waifu” idea. But if there’s a plushie of Furil, would I buy it in a heartbeat? Abso-God-dang-lutely.
I would buy a plush of Lip if it existed, since she’s MY WAIFU! (sings operatically)
Gamer Luna I’d buy one so I could hug it. Keep in mind, Furil *CRIES* on the Game Over screen.
I’d also buy it because it’s Furil.
@mistoroboto But it's as if you know exactly where every match is and how to use them to your advantage from the very beginning.
I wish I was good.

That’s a good thing, because all of the fairies are VERY young. I think Lip is, like, 7.
what happened to the cloud level being first in this?=
You are..very good at this game.
It's cool to see (Furil) has a 3D model in this version.
Why is her name furil? I thought her name was lip
Isn't that Lip was a cutie?
I knew someone would agree with me. I think Lip is among Nintendo’s most huggable characters.
She is Furil? or Lip?

@DrMecha Okay so they where cheap. but what I just said is the reason why they're being cheap in the first place.
but it was in other versions.i wonder just WHY they broke the order.
I love this game.
😁
All this time I thought she was Lip D8

Panel de Pon 64.
Looks Like Tetris Attack
OreDaiyoWarioDaiyo Tetris Attack is Panel de Pon brought to the west. In other words, a reskin.

Wish it had Yoshi characters instead of the fairies
