Paused a different Paul Harrell video to check out this new one! As a 20 year old new gun owner that isn't from a gun friendly family this channel is such a wealth of knowledge. Thank you so much Paul.
I foresee great things for you in the firearms world; I was raised by gun-hating leftists as well, and I'm now a competitive shooter and published firearms history author!

As always, the very best presenter I have EVER seen... professional, concise, clear, impartial, a joy to watch. Would love to meet and thank you for your work while promoting your videos to everyone I know
Mr.Harrell, I have purchased all of these brands and I must say that they all are highly effective at dispatching soda 🥤 cans I pray that I never have to use them for any other reason……..
The Green and White box Remington load can be found just about anywhere, including Walmart; the Corbon and Buffalo Bore take a bit more looking. They all seemed pretty equal on the meat target, except for the one BB that didn't expand. The more relevant point might be which one hits closet to the fixed sights on most .38 snubbies.
I really appreciate you going over all of this stuff, Paul. I'm a big fan of .38 and appreciate a true expert, like yourself, testing all of the capabilities of these various rounds. Very informative. Thank you
I have a .357 360 PD which requires 120 grains. I was looking for .38 Ammo with less kick. I am SO GLAD he included the 125 grain 38 Plus P Remington. It looks optimum. I will keep the .357 in the speed loader.
Agreed! Remington seems to produce good results with lots of their ammo, and it is not over hyped on the labeling. It is their standard sjhp, or hp. In some of Paul's other videos the Remington stuff does very well in those tests also.
He comes up to the checkout register at the grocery store with a cart full of ribs and oranges, and the checkout girl asks: "You doin' another youtube video Paul?"
My wife carries a 38 Special 1 7/8 inch snub. Load it with 125 gr JHP , accuracy is good, shoots to the sights and penetrates well. The old police detective load was a 158 gr hollow point hollow base bullet at 800 fps. Police used that load for decades.
As someone who is trying to transition to lead free shooter, I found this video very helpful. I will also note that all copper projectiles are still rather new, and hope they will become as consistent a performer as their older lead based brethren.

Love this channel, so well presented, its a great loss to those who don't know about Paul's channel. There should be at least 2 million subs just for the great 70's/80's intro.
WOW, I just chonographed the Remington 125 SJHP 357 magnums out of my 4.2 inch SP101 at 1515 fps and my 6 inch 686 at 1584 fps. They are definitely magnum rounds.
Billy, late comment, but I was shooting those in the 80's. They were some of the hottest 357s available at the time. It is the only load I have been unable to match in my hand loading efforts. They may not be today's "hyper" ammo, but "entry-level" they are not...never have been.
Brandon - The dog had to be put down, much to my disappointment. From there, lost the desire to film anymore. But, have to admit, Paul's videos make me think and inspire me to get the camera out again. I'm not "into" the shooting channels much, albeit I've been active within the shooting community for 30+ years. Paul's vids are a step or two above the "tacti-cool" videos most put out. Thanks for the note. Hope you are well.
Thanks so much for this video. You are right that the 637 is a good representation of the typical guns carried, because I carry a S&W J-frame with a 1.875" barrel and already do carry the Hornady CD 110+P in it. It's helpful to know what that barrel is pulling in velocity with the Hornady round and also helpful to have other ammo tested that I have been wondering about. This video will be very helpful to many. Thanks again for sharing.
Paul - This is an excellent video that will benefit a great many of us, because snubnose .38 Special/.357 magnum revolvers continue to be a widely employed concealed carry alternative. THANK YOU. I wanted to add one comment, which I help may assist some viewers. I often carry a 2.25 inch barrel Ruger SP-101; as you’re well aware, it is: - A very high quality five-shot revolver, - Designed for great durability/reliability, - Delivering surprising fine accuracy (with Crimson Trace grips, it is quite accurate, even at 50 yards), and - Quite capable of handling .357 magnum loads (including stout ones). It’s a “snubby,” but it is also somewhat heftier than a J Frame. Magnum recoil makes RAPID follow-up shots difficult form the SP-101 (or any snbunose, in my opinion). Therefore, I opt to use Buffalo Bore, 158 Grain, +P, lead semi-wadcutter hollow points, rather than any .357 magnum round. This round is an adaptation of the revered “FBI load,” its soft lead composition is specifically designed to enhance expansion, it provides 1000+ FPS muzzle velocities, and it has a gas check that virtually eliminates barrel leading (even with the soft lead in this LSWCHP). I believe this round is near peerless for defensive use from any short barreled 38 Special +P or .357 magnum revolver (I even occasionally carry it in my Ruger KGP-141 - a SUPERB revolver - with a four-inch barrel).
I'm a newer revolver shooter just started with 2 revolvers this year a 38 spl and 357 5 in" the .38 I carry daily the .357 is a back up hunting weapon and fun range gun these videos help a lot cause I was debating ordering the buffalo bore cause I felt like a scrub carrying the Remington ammo now I feel better about it.
J Cleveland ...Yes. Straight forward, no BS, videos loaded with practical real world information. I love the lack of slickness in production. Other guntubers would have dragged this out to 25 minutes with useless slow-mos, special effects and self aggrandizing.
You consistently produce some of the most informative and interesting gun videos out there. It is clear to see the effort you put into them. I hope your style of videos never change! Thanks for what you do!
I've been watching yt gun channels for a couple/few years now. How is it I'm just now finding this hidden gem of a channel? I checked out a few of your video's now and have liked them all. The videos are clearly well thought out, well put together, extremely informative, outstanding presentation and your subdued sense of humor absolutely tops it off nicely. Well done sir. Subscribed for sure.
That is some high speed to get out of a short barrel. For snub nose .38 +P I use the fast burning powder, Bullseye and I use the Hornady XTP 125 grain HP and they really do a number on the pestilential coyotes around here. If you take a small dog for a walk outside the city the coyotes may actually attempt to get it whether there's a human around or not. Las Cruces NM.
Thanks for another good video. While I tend to like the fancy bullets sometimes, I'm glad to know that less fancy bullets will do the job. I still carry Silvertips in my .38 much of the time.
Thanks Paul. Well done, and great that you put the Rem. ammo comparo in too, for the times you cannot find the other hotter rounds, it is good to know what the green/yellow box can do for ya....
Thanks for another great comparison, Paul! I'm an advocate of having just a couple of boxes of Buffalo Bore to carry, and then training with those very same Remington rounds. I believe the barrier penetration ability of those copper bullets notably exceeds those of inexpensive soft lead hollow points.
I'm feeling better than ever about the Cor Bon DPX I carry in my airweight 637. For me it's worth the extra expense to get the extra velocity and consistent expansion from the ammo that just may save my life one day. Looking forward to your eventual 357 sig video since that is my other carry caliber. Great video as always, Paul.
Thanks Paul this proves the BB ammo does do what it says. I have this as carry ammo in my SP101 3" and I tried to get the Underwood to you but had mailing issues. The Underwood is half the price of the BB so may be a better choice.. Thanks again!!!!
Paul, I have watched a great deal of your videos and find them very well done and informative. I also share your skepticism of the ‘hyper’ ammunitions, with few exceptions. However, one load that does seem to live up to the hype and which I think you ought to take a look at and perform a review of is the Buffalo Bore 38 special +p outdoorsman. It’s a 158 gn SWC designed for outdoor protection, and there really isn’t anything else on the market comparable. I have attempted and failed to match its performance with my own handloads. I have personally chronographed it at 1173 fps from a 4 inch barrel and 1062 fps from a 2 inch barrel. That would be 483 ft/lbs and 396 ft/lbs respectively, which is remarkable performance from a 38. In any case, I think either a review of this ammo or perhaps a review of the Buffalo Bore outdoorsman line of ammo (they offer several ‘outdoorsman’ loads of various calibers) more generally would make for an interesting video. I’m not affiliated with Buffalo Bore, I have just found that they offer some things that aren’t available elsewhere in the market and which I can’t seem to replicate with handloads. Thanks for your contributions to the hunting and shooting communities.
I love the Meat Target for testing. The Buffalo Bore almost reminds me of the old super hot "Treasury Load." Those were basically "light" .357 Magnum loads.
Paul, very good video. The fast buffalo bore ammo is great, but i like how you proved the basic ammo is just as effective. I have arrived at the conclusion by watching many videos of yours. In self defense, the gun you are most skilled and accurate with is the best choice maybe even disregarding caliber or cartridge as long as the projectile is suitable for the task at hand.
For the .38 Special it seems like the ancient "FBI load" is still the round to beat. I tend to go for heavy-for-caliber ammo to begin with no matter what round I'm shooting. Handgun power is marginal compared to rifle power so I opt for a bullet that will penetrate well. As much as I've had shitty luck with cheap Remington ammo I have to concede their higher end nickle cased 158 lead semi-wadcutter hollow points seem to be consistent, reliable and accurate.
I like a 158gn or 200gn cast bullet out of a 38 and a 357 Magnum but I also like the lighter JHPs from them too. I think the 38 Special gets a bad rap when it was perfectly fine for LEA’s for decades. Also considered a 148gn WC as fast as I could push it without leading the barrel for a defensive load but I’m waiting on Paul to shoot a meat target with some.
Ahhhh...I love the sound of "gunfire in the background"! Life is Good ( ...to borrow a quote from Hickok45😉) As usual, another Objective, informative, "facts only" presentation. Thanks Paul, I think I'll retire the Hornady ammo in my .38 for Remington green and white box.....I'm wasting 💰.
I use the Buffalo Bore 340 gr. +P+ .44 magnum on wildhogs. That is one place the high dollar ammo is worth the extra money. For every day use around the farm for coyotes I prefer Privy Partisan ammo. Hotter than Winchester and Remington. Good for cougars as well. For concealed carry super hot ammo isn't necessary, nor cost effective unless you're rich and have money to spend in excess. Remington makes adequate ammo for every day use and won't break the bank. Just my opinion.
Take away, 90/10 rule? For 90% ($$?) extra cost, 10% extra effectiveness.. once expansion threshold met.. your mileage may vary. As always, Paul is a professional and provides a common sense (backed with much experience) demonstration. I've gone back to green and white (and sometimes just white) boxed ammo. Stay safe out there.
The Buffalo Bore uses Barnes TAC-XP projectile. If you buy it as a reloading component, it runs about 69¢ per projectile. You only get 40 in a box. That doesn't help with the price. Copper is much harder than lead, so more velocity is needed to open up the hollow point. Perhaps different construction can mitigate that problem. The real big deal that may come in to play is lead bans/restrictions. I'm fairly sure those are coming.
I wish I could add a constructive comment on Paul's videos, but I'm from the UK, don't have any firearms & don't shoot. I am a subscriber & every video gets a thumbs up, but I've nothing else. It's an interesting watch, though and I do like Paul's teaching style - less laughs than Taofledermaus though. Deepest sympathies for everyone killed, injured or affected by events in Vegas last Sunday.
Were it not for these mass killers, we could have no problem arguing for self-defense because the overall statistics show our gun violence has gone down as our gun ownership has gone up. Guys like this, though, would be making bombs if they did not have guns. Would you rather have a Timothy McVeigh or a Stephen Paddock. *_You be the judge._*
John Lloyd Scharf I've got no idea why I'd illicit a question like that - I wasn't asking to get involved in a debate about gun control in a country that I don't live in. I was merely offering my sympathies to anyone who may have been involved, and that's all there was to it - I watch several channels and take part in several forums which have a large number of Americans on them - prior to the start of the hurricanes I wished people well, and following them I expressed sympathies, and the same with this. It's none of my business what the laws are in the USA, (although obviously I do have opinions) but I think that it's fair to say that if I was anti-gun then I wouldn't be subscribed to 4 separate gun/shooting channels.
Funny thing is you guys across the pond get run over by trucks and acid thrown in your face. Bads guys gonna be bad I guess. Thank god for the 2a, someday maybe you guys will win that right too.
I used to live in the UK. I hate the fact that so many people there have been indoctrinated with the fact that guns and evil and self defense is a dirty word. It's pretty sad. Buy yourself a gun, its not impossible. In the US, I love the fact that I can drive to work with guns in the truck, any amount of ammo and pop 10 minutes down the street at lunch to shoot for 30 minutes. we enjoy freedom here. research buying in the UK. maybe look at some black powder pistols.
Thanks for the video Paul!! I use the Hornady Critical Defense in my 642 everyday carry gun!!! This gives me some other options available, that I haven't tried. As always, very informative!!!
Paul: some of your viewers are concerned about the most unimportant things. range noise? earplug case? protective eyewear? you have my full support....!!!
What a nice Christmas present it would be if you made it to 100K subscribers by then!! Keep it up Paul.... Love your down to earth presentations.... Knowledge in every vid...
awesome but I'll stick with my 9 mm compact. Equal or better performance and more capacity within the same foot print. But the video shows an excellent point; how much stopping power do you really gain with more expensive +P loads especially, on short barrel handguns @ 10 yards or less. It seems the quality of the bullet is more important on effectiveness. Paul, I do see a pattern in your videos. You really like the green and white box Remington ammo.
I used to think .357 Mag JHPs were the best for snub nose revolvers but after shooting Buffalo Bore's wadcutters in .38 +P that's all I use. Hell, on 3" barrel revolvers I'd still shoot wadcutters. I will also say that I'm not a huge fan of lead free hollow points for defensive handgun usage, but you can find some form of the all copper hollow point on the shelves of nearly every store at least in my experience. So if your options for ammo selection are restricted because you live in a more anti-gun state, the all copper hollow points are fine. I avoid them but that's just personal preference. I do like the Critical Defense in .38 and the Critical Duty in .357 Mag because that ballistic tip helps it expand out of shorter barrels (Hornady is a brand I trust pretty much across all calibers). Since wadcutters pretty much have to be ordered online, the Hornady ammo is a good option for SHTF scenarios where you need ammo immediately. Like when Hurricane Harvey rolled through I picked up some Hornady 9mm Critical Duty and 00 Buck Critical Defense at the local store because of hurricane looter boogaloo (though I fortunately didn't need to use them).
I switched my concealed carry from a Ruger lcp 380 to a Ruger lcR 357. I like the power and ballistics of the 357 but if I have to shoot in a defensive situation I’ll go def. I’m thinking about carrying some hot 38 spl loads. Those Remington green and white box looked to have done very well but idk what I’m gonna go with
Should you have a concern about going deaf as a result of a self defense confrontation, sounds as if it's more a concern should you find yourself in an extended combat war zone. Put another way, better temporarily deaf than permanently dead.
Considering how people fall all over themselves praising Buffalo Bore, I am surprised by both the middling performance in the meat target and by the fact that there aren't dozens of BB fans in the comment section expressing the hurt that is presently present in the butts.
Sir, what is your opinion about Center Axes Relock shooting technics? I think that is the best way to hurt yourself shooting at your own chest, arms, hands and fingers. Besides, shooting a gun so close your head in real shootout scenarios, without glasses and mufflers, can lead a blindness an earing losses. Please, I really appreciate your position on this! Thanks!
I would like to see you test the effectiveness of underwoods extreme defender in 38 sp +p and its only a 100g bullet. The box promises 15.5in of penetration and a much larger temporary and permanent cavity.
1 minute in and there is a lot of thought behind the evaluation. Comparing the Buffalo Bore to the Hornady and Cor-Bon is a great evaluation of premium 38+p ammo.
7:34 - the parameters of the question have changed.. buffalo bore has 125 gr .357 magnum jhp for $33 and theyre almost never out of stock - golden sabers sourced locally are upwards of $50 for the same 20 rounds.. when you can find them! - so buffalo bore is currently *way* more bang for your buck in my neck of the woods, without all the searching
Great Video, only odd ball comment, at about 7 mins mark a fly went by and I must have his twin in my place, cause my gut reaction was, I wanted to get up a swat it . Carry on.
Hi Paul, please consider a similar test for the brand new .38 Special +p Federal HST 130gr round. Walmart carries them typically. It's deep seated like a wadcutter for consistent powder burn and the bullet is tuned for expanding well at snubbie velocities. I'd love to see your meat target test for that round, rather than the typical gel setup. Love your videos, man, and thanks for your time reading this.
The future is likely going to be more and more copper or composite projectiles. Could you consider testing some lead versus copper rounds shot into solid objects, such as doors, car window, etc? I wonder how copper holds up to solid objects a bad guy may be hiding behind. Thank you for your honest and entertaining videos.
Is it worth the extra cost you ask? I've seen a lot of videos on the Barnes and just looked at your HST vid a little while ago. Yup the Barnes bullet is worth it. I have Barnes in Buffalo Bore 45, Double Tap in 10mm and 357 Sig, plus a sub loaded 9mm for my Ladysmith. Oh yea, and the Barnes brand ammo for the 44 mag and 223.. I took advantage of clearance and sales and got them quite cheap. I always saw praise for the HST when the question came up in gun forums and I was always intrigued, but now I'm convinced. Thanks for the effort Paul.
A worthy rewatch. Paul, positive thoughts & healing mojo still being sent.

Very good point. We cover that in one of our other presentations.
I bet the one that did not expand was the last round fired and it went through the cavity created by the others.
Alas, wally world doesn’t carry pistol rounds anymore.
Buffalo bores actually the easiest one to get, you just order it online. Get 12 boxes or more and the shipping is free
@@patrickjones8255
Yeah but it would be cheaper to buy a car than buy 12 boxes of Buffalo Bore ammo. XD
I’m coming to really like the non biased reviews and examinations in these videos. Very refreshing to not be pitched on RUclips.

The 125 SJHP in a 357 is a devastating round. In 4 inch guns it gets 1400 fps and expands beautifully. Thanks again for another great video Paul.

I believe the barrier penetration ability of those copper bullets notably exceeds those of inexpensive soft lead hollow points.
Thanks so much for doing the base comparison with the green box Remington ammunition. For me it made the presentation/video.
Very informative for those of us that carry 38 spl
I love the Meat Target for testing. The Buffalo Bore almost reminds me of the old super hot "Treasury Load." Those were basically "light" .357 Magnum loads.
Paul, very good video. The fast buffalo bore ammo is great, but i like how you proved the basic ammo is just as effective. I have arrived at the conclusion by watching many videos of yours. In self defense, the gun you are most skilled and accurate with is the best choice maybe even disregarding caliber or cartridge as long as the projectile is suitable for the task at hand.
Most informative gun vids on RUclips
Paul, I love the meat targets! So much better than ballistic gel. Thank you and keep up the testing.
I can't thank you enough for the awesome videos and hard work. I much prefer your videos over more well-known RUclips gun channels. Keep it up. 👍👍
Nice test, as usual. I think I'm going to stick with the "cheap stuff", as I already have been, based on other reviews you've done. Thanks!
Two videos in one week ! I love it. Great job Paul !
Rob Babcock maybe the old timers had some good, practical ideas. Yes they did!
Thank You Paul
Truly appreciate that there's rarely any wind noise on his mic. What does Paul know that the bozos don't know?
Woooooo baby the meat target is back!
R Re Paul's dogs are happy !!!
The meat target never gets old. Love it!
Love ❤️ S&W 38
The Buffalo Bore uses Barnes TAC-XP projectile. If you buy it as a reloading component, it runs about 69¢ per projectile. You only get 40 in a box. That doesn't help with the price. Copper is much harder than lead, so more velocity is needed to open up the hollow point. Perhaps different construction can mitigate that problem. The real big deal that may come in to play is lead bans/restrictions. I'm fairly sure those are coming.
Interesting. Not the results I would have predicted. Thanks!
Fascinating, I think I'll buy the Remington green and white box. For this type of ammo, do we really want it to fly through the intended target?.?.
In the US, I love the fact that I can drive to work with guns in the truck, any amount of ammo and pop 10 minutes down the street at lunch to shoot for 30 minutes. we enjoy freedom here. research buying in the UK. maybe look at some black powder pistols.
p51mustang24 What's so funny about terrorist attacks? Or these fuckers in East London throwing acid around?
Thanks for the video Paul!! I use the Hornady Critical Defense in my 642 everyday carry gun!!! This gives me some other options available, that I haven't tried. As always, very informative!!!
Paul: some of your viewers are concerned about the most unimportant things.
range noise? earplug case? protective eyewear?
you have my full support....!!!

Makes wonder how some Underwood ammo would do. Such as the
38 Special +P 158 Grain Lead Semi-Wadcutter Hollow Point Gas Check loaded to 1000fps.
Outstanding videos, and great unbiased info. I appreciate your time and knowledge.
Hello from Los banos California great job on the video
Keep them coming Mr. Harrell
It's cheap, reliable, and available at my local stores.
Great video!! I'm convinced that I no longer need expensive ammo to he effective. Thanks.
Finnaly Paul has a decent camera!
ToyCorner he chanes it though
Thanks for making the Buffalo Bore 38 Special video.
Well yea I agree with that since then I’ve shot it once without earplugs and it’s not near as bad as I thought when I first got it
Considering how people fall all over themselves praising Buffalo Bore, I am surprised by both the middling performance in the meat target and by the fact that there aren't dozens of BB fans in the comment section expressing the hurt that is presently present in the butts.
Very good and informative as usual, Paul. Thank you.
Thx so much for this info... Perfect for my SW642.
Thanks!
Just looked at a couple of videos on the topic. Now I have to go to the range and try it.
I just watched one of his how to videos...He kept putting his talking hand in front of his weapon. I turned it off after 10 or so seconds.
Thank you for posting this video, as it really helps to put some perspective on how this ammo performs. And more information is always a good thing!
I would like to see you test the effectiveness of underwoods extreme defender in 38 sp +p and its only a 100g bullet. The box promises 15.5in of penetration and a much larger temporary and permanent cavity.
So if I buy the less expensive ammo then practice with my carry ammo, will my increased accuracy offset the advantage of a little additional power?
If you can t hit the target the higher power level is moot , so the answer is surely “yes”
1 minute in and there is a lot of thought behind the evaluation. Comparing the Buffalo Bore to the Hornady and Cor-Bon is a great evaluation of premium 38+p ammo.
Buffalo Bore moves right along. Interesting results.
Carry on.
More good info!
Thank you sir.
That would be a good ammo to test. I always like to test off the shelf brands because I perceive that's what more people will have.
