When I was in Australia my friend's brother's English wife served Bubble and Squeak in a casserole dish. It had cabbage, mashed potatoes and onion with a little bacon. It was very delicious! 😋
I always made my bubble and squeak with left over cabbage and left over boiled potatoes seasoned and fried in a frying pan with some butter or spread but never with anything else and it delicious but all messed up not tidy!
I don't know about you, but since I've stopped snacking I really enjoy my meals more. I just appreciate flavors so much more when I look forward to mealtime. This is a must try!
I found your channel through Sage's when she did the 1940s cottage pie and I must say that you are the most adorable woman and I love your channel. I have subscribed and will continue watching you!
Fab ! That looks delicious Carolyn. It's nice to see how other people make their Bubble & Squeak 🙂. I've just had a jacket potato with a small amount of cheese and butter from my ration and a dash of brown sauce along with half a tin of beans ('using' 2 points from my allocation for the month to get the tin of beans). xx
That sounds really nice, love a jacket potato! xxxx I didn't buy beans with my 16 points so shall really miss them during this month's challenge! C xxxx
@@1940sExperiment .... I love beans so will struggle with just the one tin lol I have a wedding to attend this month and a couple of meals 'in and out' but will try and stick to the ration amounts on all other days x
Looks so yummy, Carolyn! I’ll put that on the menu later this week. It’s so great to watch someone cook it, as it’s more of a pancake than I realized! We’re late starting as I wanted to finish up leftovers from last night. Thank you! 💜
I love, love, love bubble and squeak! It's my favourite thing of all the Christmas dishes. We make it with the leftovers from the Christmas roast. And brown sauce is essential! I have cavolo Nero in my veg patch, maybe that would make a good version. Thanks, Carolyn, really enjoying the challenge. 😊
Bit late catching up with this, actually a bit late catching up with all your stuff ! (life has been happening as it does ) but this looks lovely, I'm thinking that if a little grated cheese was available it would add to the flavour ? I think you do very well cooking for yourself after a full days work, most people would take the easy way out i.e. eggs/beans/sardines/etc on toast or a quick sandwich, (I know I have !) but you are an inspiration. Take care
That looks lovely Carolyn! I don't know if you've heard of it but it reminds me of the Japanese street food dish called okonomiyaki! I give it a big recommendation! xx
and....as Rayne said, it also reminds me of a korean dish I would encounter while stationed there--can't spell it, but it was 'vegetable pancake' made of scraps of veg., grease, bit of flour. Yours looks good, and I will be doing that later.
thanks! I've seen 'bubble and squeak' referred to on the British tv shows I'v watched; always wondered 'what' (thought originally it was something like sausage and beans -which can also cause some 'bubble and squeak'
I'm sure there will be people who may add a spoonful of beans into it if they needed to use them up but generally it was mash, and leftover veggies and meat xxxxx

Bubble and Squeak was not a "wartime recipe". It's a classic which has been around forever.

I use allspice in mine. And salt and pepper. But definitely allspice, and cabbage.

That looks delicious!
I live in America & for some bizarre reason I thought "bubble & squeak" was made with potatoes & beans. Silly me. Lol
