  • Alpha FLTA005, a mission called Noise of Summer, supports Firefly’s Venture-Class Launch Services Demo 2 contract with NASA that serves to validate the capabilities of launch vehicles that support a new launch class and provide more access to space for small satellites and spacecraft.
The Alpha FLTA005 Noise of Summer mission is prepared to launch no earlier than July 3, 2024. A 30-minute window begins at 9:03PM PST.
NSF will provide Livestream Production Services for this launch.

I wonder if I should tell this story - but oh well....
My father was George Arthur Jacobs, an aerospace engineer originally from Pennsylvania. He had a last contract in Sunnyvale that was something to do with the space shuttle engines. On the scheduled day of the first launch (which WAS successful) he sat in front of the TV set (what we had in those days) through every single hold and wait. I remember he sat there overnight, unmoving, following the entire process. I had to go to the kitchen and bring food to the man... Until it finally went into orbit, and then he shot up out of his chair, CLAPPED his hands together and said: "THAT'S IT! WE DID IT!!!"
~ and then he took me out to celebrate 😎
It was one of the most unforgettable moments in time that I remember about MY PAPA

The ice shaking off like little Space-Fireflies, damn gorgeous vision. Great to see they're getting success, more launchers in the marketplace leads to lower prices to launch customers, and the competition leads to innovation.
Microphone on Structure, don't expect to hear the exhaust gases burning, but instead, fuel pumps, valves, maybe tank slosh, pressurisation events, things inside the structure, all very cool stuff to listen too.

Telemetry and video feed were a tad glitchy, but not bad. For their 5th overall launch, pretty amazing actually. They went up to over 500km altitude, impressive! Great coverage Das, @NSF, you guys rock! Congratulations to the folks from Firefly - "Noise of Summer" appears to have had great success!

When I was doing bridge construction we were patching damaged concrete and that is how we found the weak points by tapping on it with a hammer and listening to the sound.

From New Zealand - congrats to Firefly! Great launch!
It'd be great to see reusable stages being used in the future as I'm aware that the present system uses expendable rockets.
Hopefully, reusable ones will come soon and that could help to bring down launch costs too!
    Keep up the great work!

I hate to give the NSF team more work to do, but I really liked the different opening montage for the Firefly Alpha launch. I realize it was part of a joint coverage between Firefly Aerospace and NSF. But I think it would be really cool if there was a different opening montage (but same music) for the different types of rocket launches; Vulcan, Atlas, Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Starship, Firefly, Electron, etc. And then keep using the existing intro for everything else including Starship updates, etc. I.e. the custom montages would just be for actual launch livestreams. Although I’m guessing Jack would be the one who would have to do it all, if so sorry Jack! But I think it would be really cool.

If you are half a century old with the mind of a teenager, you can really appreciate the progress in all of these launches. I missed Apollo with my birth by 2 years. My generation has sat for 50 years with NOTHING! No flying cars and a rise in right wing self centred thinking. We are in a resource scarce bubble of a world, full of narcissists who have no idea how we got here. This is HOPE! For our race. Without that you get d T and a very de-ad planet! Good job firefly. You should have never been cancelled in the first place 😂 hope this got past the fasc m o d s.

I admire your enthusiasm and enjoyment of being here. But do yourself and your listeners a favor. Take a breath. Slow down just a little, and take some time to enunciate and form your words. You will stumble and stutter less, and add to the enjoyment of your listeners. Over 40 years announcing experience here. Listen to yourself, and to some of the old timers. Cronkite, Bergman, Roy Neal all covered space shots, and were as enthused as you, but showed their excitement without stumbling.
