All of Nightfly is fantastic and worthy of being a Steely Dan album even tho it was a Fagen joint. But Nick & Lex would really be impressed by one of the less ballyhooed cuts on Nightfly, the jazz ballad Maxine. The chords in that song are monstrous and they really show Fagen as a musical genius.

It's the same way Steely Dan fans felt the first time they heard the song. As each new album came out, we rushed to the store and celebrated our first listen.
Gaslighting Abbie - we know you listen for the music first, but on your second listen, be sure to pay attention to the lyrics. The guitar twangs have a purpose. They are meant to make the listener uncomfortable, since the song is about the protagonist and his girlfriend killing the wife.
It's similar to I Got the News. uncomfortable music surrounding sleazy lyrics. A Steely Dan trademark.

I'm so pleased you've gotten around to one of my favorite Steely albums. Always had great fondness for it. As for who was playing bass on Black Friday, it was Becker, which is what I thought since the bass line was so basic. Wilton Felder and Chuck Rainey split the other tracks for bass guitar. But how about that glorious dirty guitar solo that had me puzzled because I knew it wasn't Denny Dias or Jeff Baxter. Well, surprise surprise it was also Walter! You can look forward to the rest of Katy Lied because it's a delight.
I'm happy you've got a Dan concert coming up in the Northwest and you were wondering if they would have enough zip since Donald is old. What I can say is I saw them in 2016 with Becker and they were very good and energetic. In fact, I was caught off guard in starting my recorder because the band almost ran onto the stage for their second set! And, regarding Snarky Puppy with its speed of light blazing jamming will likely cause SD to up their game. That's what I would suspect, that the Puppy will rub off on the Dan in a most favorable way. My best guess is you're gonna catch a great show Nick & Lex!

So glad you’re continuing down the SD rabbit hole. Still glad you’re getting to hear more of the older songs but loving that you are finally into the later years. You are going to love Two against Nature. It got mega respect when released. Here is what Wikipedia has to say about the album….
”At the 2001 Grammy Awards, Two Against Nature earned Steely Dan wins in the categories of Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Engineered Album - Non-Classical, and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals (for the single "Cousin Dupree"). For these awards, the band was in competition with younger, more popular recording acts such as NSYNC, Britney Spears, Radiohead, Beck, and Eminem.”
They used close to 30 musicians on this album, including NINE drummers and 2 percussionists. Only a few returns from earlier years. This is a MUST full album reaction!!

Finally!!! So oddly enough this is the first song I ever heard of The Dan. Well first song i heard while actually knowing it was Steely Dan. A friend had the two against nature cd. After hearing this track , i went out and bought it immediately! I played this album so many times in 2000. Love it so much! But it weirdly ended there. I did not seek out any of their earlier work. 🤔. So glad you did gaslighting abbey! It has actually been on my list of songs to request! Lex, when you said you were nervous! I had no zero doubt that it was gonna blow you away. I also want to thank you for sharing the AJA documentary . Because my love affair with this band. Started there. And i have been obsessed since! What a great video to watch after a really tough and long day at work! Love you guys! Take care everyone!!

I'm so glad you're developing a love for Steely Dan. Like you, I was a late comer to the band. I remember one time, a DJ on the radio gave a choice as to what album they were going to play, the Rolling Stones' Some Girls or Aja. Being a huge Stones fan at the time, I was rooting for Some Girls and was kinda disappointed when Aja won. It was only about '82 or '83 when I bought a Steely Dan greatest hits tape and fell in love with the band, long after their initial breakup.

The title of Katy Lied is a clever variation of a katydid. Sort of surprised no one picked up on that. Two Against Nature was their Grammy award winning album, and the biggest hit on there has to be: Cousin Dupree. That is worth a listen for sure! Great reaction as always!

from Wikipedia: The album cover features a picture of a katydid, a "singing" (stridulating) insect related to crickets and grasshoppers. This is a pun on the album's title, which is paraphrased from a line of "Doctor Wu": "Katy lies, you can see it in her eyes".

The Katy Lied album was a "leaving the city and driving home" album when I was commuting 40 miles to college in Boston. On the last day of final exams that would be followed up by sparking one up, putting on the Grateful Dead "Anthem of the Sun" album and crashing on the bed LOL.
One of my favorite songs on the album is "Daddy Don't Live in that New York City No More". Great composition is the heart of every Steely Dan song but that one inspires the most vigorous involuntary head bobbing I've ever experienced.

As an Aussie I have a particular affection for Black Friday since they mention the town of Muswellbrook, which we pronounce as "Mussellbrook' & is about an hours drive from where i live in NSW Australia. Apparently Fagen and Becker randomly looked up the name in an atlas and found the town Muswellbrook. Also there ARE kangaroos in the bush around that town.
BTW the first song i ever heard by them was on the radio - Reeling in the Years. I then bought the LP Cant buy a Thrill.
