I love this movie... and am still stunned by how much more I see on screen whenever I watch it on DVD. See, I originally had the VHS and had it for years until I finally got the DVD. When I watched the DVD though, I genuinely thought I'd gotten some different version, like a director's cut or something, because stuff was happening on screen I did NOT remember on the VHS version. It was small at first, Mole on screen with Sweep as he's saying "nice to meet you too" to Milo as the latter hurries off to answer a summons from the Commander. Then it kept happening, seeing more in the background than I ever remembered before it finally clicked as they were going across the bridge to Atlantis as Rourke and Helga were talking. I was seeing the movie as it was supposed to be. The only reason my brain was getting confused, and still does to this day, is because I'd watched the VHS version so much and for so many years, when the VHS version was edited in a way so you could see more with the limited screen rate VHS had compared to DVDs. So the VHS version has more panning shots and close up jump cuts to make sure the film isn't held up and can keep moving forward at its normal pace, while also letting you see everything and everyone. It's honestly quite fascinating when you stop and really think about it. The creative process of fitting things on VHS when the screen just couldn't show everything at once
Here's a fun fact. According to Disney wiki, Cree Summer said how she jumped at the chance to voice Kida due to finally getting to be in a Disney movie. disney.fandom.com/wiki/Kida_Nedakh
Atlantis the Lost Empire is underrated classic that should get more respect and honors considering that it is to meet one of his best and you're unappreciated both for the main heroine Kida is not an official Disney princess because there's no animal sidekick and there's no musical numbers but she's a great Disney heroines

Honestly, this deserves to be remade as a TV series, not a film...I mean, think about it; the entire first season could focus on their expedition travelling to Atlantis, with each episode focusing on a new set of ruins to explore/a peril to get past, while one member of the crew gets the spotlight and we learn about them. The team working on this film designed loads of specialist vehicles which only had brief cameos in the film or in supplementary materials (I remember a 'Captain Jack' tank driven by Helga as a Happy Meal Toy, and you can see a fancy bridge-building device model in that first clip with Whitmore; WordOfGod is these vehicles got destroyed by the Leviathan), but imagine if they got to be used in the show itself, with so much extra time to explore them with! In the end, you'd have a pseudo-steampunk world that's also reminiscent of Indiana Jones...I'm sure that'd draw crowds, and could easily be extended if it's done right (and if it doesn't, Season 1 ending with them finding Atlantis at least would be a conclusion of a sort). Season 2 could focus on Atlantis and spend waaaay more time building up to the conclusion, and then a Season 3 could do what Milo's Return failed to do; have the crew return to the surface and investigate oddities around the world...
I honestly agree with you. Even I was fascinated by this movie, and I was 6 years old. This movie was also inspiration and reason for my fascination for mysteries.
I LOVE this movie. I loved that it did something new to get out of the princess/fairy tale category and I agree with you that Tom Holland would make an awesome Milo Thatch. I also agree with you on the flaws but those never stopped me from loving this movie. This and Treasure Planet deserve much more praise than what they first got for being different and epic.
The early 2000's were kind of an experimental period for Disney animation. They were trying to step away from musical adaptations of old stories and produce more of their own original ideas, especially dabbling more in sci-fi and adventure. Atlantis is such an exciting movie and I still love it to this day.
Kida is still one of my fav Disney female chars for a reason. I WISH she could be included into the Disney Princess line up, she deserves it, even though it's unlikely due to the movie not being too popular.
@@GoldenFoxPictures I pin of the journal; if they made replicas of the shepherd’s journal, preferably lined, I would totally use it for dungeons and dragons or some of my archaeology notes
I definitely agree that Tom Holland would be a great choice for Milo should Disney decide to remake Atlantis. Heck, Tom Holland has said himself in an interview that he’s interested in playing Milo if the role should ever be offered to him.
Yup, it was his last film and was dedicated to his memory. Sadly, he passed away before he could finish recording and his remaining lines were filled in by Steven Barr.
Micheal J Fox in an animated film doesn't surprise me, but Cree Summer a voice actor being the lead in animated film released in theaters, that is really rare??????
Personally, I've never seen this movie, but I've seen Treasure Planet and I rank that as one of my favorite Disney movies to date that's aged well despite how underrated it is. But yeah, it's a big to do with both these movies. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Independence Day as that's a movie I appreciate greatly.
Wait where are you? If i should guess its because its isnt mlp but your oc make it more lively i guess there is more emotion in what you say but you know you do you
Personally, I like the fact that they added a back story to this lost city. No one really knows what happened to it after the flood. *drops into a dramatic voice* It still remains one of the greatest mysteries in the world.
I absolutely love Atlantis: The Lost Empire. But if I'm gonna be completely 100% entirely honest, I would only watch this once and then watch the Studio Ghibli movie Castle in the Sky more than this movie. The same goes for Treasure Planet.
I’m gonna be real, that part of this review has aged poorly… after the bullshit releases of other remakes afterwards, not to mention how ignorant Rachel Zegler is about Snow White while being given the role, I have no hope for anything Disney chooses to remake at the tip of their fingers…
Funny that you mentioned the idea of Tom Holland possibly playing the role of Milo in a Disney live action remake of Atlantis. Almost a year ago, I found a “Celebrity Interview while playing with Puppies” video with Tom Holland on RUclips. He actually said that if he could do a live action remake movie, it would be Atlantis: The Lost Empire as Milo Thatch.
This has to be one of my favorite movies of all time, yeah it's kinda got some basic plot beats and cliches like you said, but I can't help but love it. And for not really being a big fan of musicals, this is guys so right for me along side, Treasure Planet, Tarzan, and Brother Bear. (Yes I like brother bear and I don't get why other folk dislike it so much)
In regards to Brother Bear, there were two reasons I kept hearing back to back. One, it was criticized for "playing it too safe" by borrowing too much typical Disney cliches, and making a roadtrip adventure. And two, some people felt ripped off from the beginning and ending segments that were mature compared to Kenai's journey with Koda. Honestly I always found it stupid given the name of the movie itself. What were they expecting? Not to mention a majority of Disney films borrow cliches from each other all the time.
Honestly wasn't a big fan of it. It seemed to undermined a lot of what made the first movie important in its narrative, especially when Kida rose Atlantis to the surface of the sea at the end of the movie.

Atlantis, in my opinion, would have been perfect for Kingdom Hearts 3. I feel like it's a seriously underrated film.
I want to see this film show up in Kingdom Hearts
Did you know Marc Okrand created the Atlantean language? He also created the Klingon and Vulcan languages from Star Trek.
I think I remember hearing about that once. It's fascinating.
I'm actually a HUGE fan of both Atlantis movies, despite all the hate they get from some critics
Same here!
This and Treasure planet are definitely my favorite Disney films out there .(can't believe it's been 20 years since it came out).
I f**kin’ love this movie so much despite the fact that it wasn’t Disney’s best films.
I love this movie... and am still stunned by how much more I see on screen whenever I watch it on DVD.
