  • My Jaguar XF boot / trunk would not open.
How do you get into the boot / trunk if the lock has failed. I'll show how to get access to the boot in this video by removing the rear seats. Its a lot harder than it sounds an you need long think arms.
Find out if what happened next, it's shocking !!
There are three parts to this footage

Oh my goodness! We are having the same problem. I am so annoyed with the fact that the dealers are making money with such situations. What kind of cars are these that they are known to have these problems but have no easy provision to fix. What a nightmare. Thank you so much for your video and sharing the whole process. Much appreciated!

I am unsure if some of you have tried this when you watch this but because we never use the boot keyhole, it sometimes sticks just at the point it releases the trunk. Your fingers might not have the strength so a pair of pliers to hold the key and turn it but if you feel you are putting too much pressure on the key then stop, I don't want you to break the key. The joy of the part that has gone is electrical so the key should work, its just the lock is seized a little and needs that extra tiny turn of the key.

A real pain! Although consider yourself lucky you had folding seats. Mine didn't have folding seats when I bought it so to do what you have done would be even more painful! It's an odd thing that Jaguar fit the folding seats to all the XFs but some don't have the release cables, although they have the latches at the top of the seats. Behind the seats is a sound deadening panel the would need to cut away.
I 'upgraded' my rear seats to folding rear seats by removing the sound deadening panel behind the seats and buying some latches and cables off Ebay, the best £35 I could have spent. I found a RUclips video howto! Although on reflection I may have just got away with buying just the cables.
And why no seat back release inside the cabin, bonkers!

Danke, super Video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😁😁😁

I managed to get the seats out and used a length of 15mm copper pipe with a V cutout to operate the seat back lock pull handles (my variation on your hand-crafted push tool!). A right faff to get there but thanks for the guide, it was a real help. Just to clarify your instructions, you only need to undo the black 13mm nuts on the bottom and lower sides of the seat backs. Getting the ruddy trim clips off to remove the boot trim was almost as bad as the seats - I resorted to using snips on some of them and I'll buy new ones as they're cheap enough.
In my case you could hear the click when pressing the fob button, boot switch or internal switch but it wouldn't lock or unlock. The key did nothing at all. I can't see any issue with the harness, no chafing or bare wires and it tests fine with a meter, but all I did was unplug and re-plug the lock and it burst into life with a reset sequence. I was actually planning to unscrew the whole lock from the boot as working inside was a bit awkward, not to say claustrophobic.
So far it's working fine but I'll get a new harness anyway and I'm leaving the seat backs and trim out for a week or 2 in case it fails again - don't want to do that again unless I have to!

Hi David, thanks for the review on the process. When I was filming the step I was discovering all this, but the "putting the seats back" I more clearly show the steps. So it be handy for others to view that one as well as this to get an idea on all the steps! I hope other XF owners find this useful if they run into the same problem. It does sound like a replacement wiring harness is a must have when the car is 10 years old!

If you lift the middle headrest there’s a button the traps that center armrest down giving you access to the trunk

Thanks for the suggestion, but my XF does not have the "Ski Tunnel" if you look at the rear seating you can see both rear sea panels are solid. Unless the is secret switch on the car to release a rear seat not sure of any other way to access the boot :(

Grab a wire hanger lower the middle arm rest and hook the hanger on the emergency handle inside the boot and pull down.

boydr357, you might have a different XF config, but the back of the arm rest is solid on my XF (MY12), so no way to access the boot other than seat removal.🤦🏼‍♂

On the soft close mechanism, hidden behind a sponge like membrane inside a hole. Tear out the sponge and you will find a yellow torque receiver. Get a tool and turn it. The boot will open. Then the boot works fine, without the soft closing.... Thats a good thing. :)) So you definitely got ripped off on a few levels. Sorry man.

Wait does the boot button on key fob not work and does the key on your fob not open the boot? I know I had to replace the wiring for my trunk button back there as it’s a common thing that wears out on these cars

Complete lock out nothing worked , key, fob etc . Even the garage was unable to open it as they had to cut the lock to open the boot.

my jaguar 2010 trunk light stay on , how to fix it ?

Hi Thanh, I've not looked into this. I would be suspicious of the wiring loom shown in this video, as the light is on when the boot opens up (unlocks). If a wire is breaking it could mean the boot light circuit is open circuit.
