My boys are now 17 and 22. I still carry a bit of the trauma of feeling like I was ‘just a mum’. I’m improving this a lot . But it saddens me that I’m even here now having to write this. I grew up in a family that kind of conditioned me to ‘ be a mum and housewife’. And I was . I moved out of my childhood home at 18 and had my first son at 21. I decided to be a stay at home mum . For many years people would ask ‘ what do you do?’ And I would get the sad little head tilt from them as I replied. I didn’t feel worthy or good enough. Now that my boys are older and I’m starting to get that empty nest feeling , I realise it is the hardest , most worthy “job” I could have had. If only I had known that at the time.
There will forever be the people that look down on you . That’s their problem. If I could go back I would not change being a stay at home mum. It’s the greatest purpose in life I could have been given. It’s a shame it took me until after being a stay at home mum that I really realised this. I mean, I did know it, but other people’s judgements tainted it . Maybe it was the lesson I needed to go through to get to where I am today
