I have the Apple TV and the Roku 3 and as far as performance it's toss up. Apple TV has cleaner interface but I love the home button on Roku 3. Without a doubt Roku 3 has far more channels but quality is not quantity. Apple TV has most of the important and relevant channels. The headphone jack on the Roku 3 remote is awesome. Bottom line if your invested in the apple environment, your better off with the Apple TV but if not, the Roku 3 is for you. Both devices are awesome.
*I see it sale cheap at: #**amzn.to/1l8lLnY** .* the Good..... 1. Resolution. Except at the start of the movie where they seem to trade off lower resolution for start time, which I find annoying. 2. Faster than the old one. 3. Hasn't run out of memory yet. 4. Hasn't crashed repeatedly, though it does seem to crash about once a week.
i think this is a fair assessment. i actually already have an ATV that i like, but the fact that i have to have a computer or a phone running to access my NAS is absurd. Why doesn't Apple include DLNA on ATV? Because they want you to buy crap on itunes. Which is another problem - you can't access your content on a NAS without itunes running or by using a third device like a phone or computer. I am going to try the roku. hopefully it will work like my PS3 and recognize the media server natively.
Note: if you have Directv they will not let you link up HBOGo to the Roku. This seems to be Directv blocking this not Roku. wonderful little box packed with lots of options and channels.
Comcast will also block you from activating hbogo on the roku. In comcasts case it seems to be their relationship with xbox and their own boxes that is behind it.
Is there a product that's primary function is to play stuff off a USB drive onto an HDTV? That's kinda why, because it can indeed play USB stuff, but like you said that isn't the main function. I just wanted something small and portable.
If it's like the Roku 2, the microSD slot is only for storing channel config info and game saves, not video storage. Also, it ONLY plays a narrow selection of .MP4 files. If you have .AVIs, .MPGs, .MKVs or whatever, you're out of luck.
how do you watch just the regular channels like 2, 5, 7 the normal channels? Like cable all you do is change the channels but with the ROKU you have to select the App then look inside it for what you want to watch. Can you still flip from channel to channel for the regular TV channels or not? Thanks much! Cynthia
Patrick, Please talk to the powers to be to get Tech Feed on the Revision 3 Channel on Roku!!!! I have been a Roku fanatic since they opened the channel store and have the You Tube Channel but it would be so nice if Tech Feed and other Revision 3 shows that are not on Roku were. Please help.
WANT! would this take a standard atv2 power cable? reason being, is i live in australia. would i be able to import one and use an atv2 power cable to power it? i am a netflix subscriber and love plex and really want something like this for my bedroom. i already have ps3s set up in my lounge and family rooms, but don't want to buy yet another ps3 just to stream with. this thing is perfect!
What if your tv is not a smart tv;can you use a blu-ray player that has wireless streaming features? Or if you use a avr system that doesn't have any internet access;do you plug into still;and it'll work? Please advise if anyone knows? Thanks.
The ROKU has to have internet access, all the other stuff does not matter if it has access or not. I use an HDMI cable to plug into my TV, you can also plug it into many of the newer stereo system control boxes and a very few of the DVD players (most of those don't have an HDMI input). Mine runs directly to a Denon: usa.denon.com/us/product/bluetooth/avreceiversbt/avrs500bt But many other home theater systems have multiple inputs that will work.
The Roku players are not being updated by Netflix, so the Netflix menu in Roku is like years old in function. Most all of the other boxes follow the HTML-5 push updates from Netflix, so they all have the enhanced look with far more features. Roku users are stuck with the old "Instant Quene" route. No Netflix kids, either, so if you have kids, the Roku is NOT what you want. Netflix kids is HUGE for kids.
I own a Roku. Avoid it if you want Netflix to be your main source of video. The reason is because Roku has been avoided in the recent Netflix menu upgrades, and even their forum police admit they won't get such upgrades until well into next year. How big of a deal is this? Huge! Especially if you have kids. Netflix kids is awesome for kids, and Roku does not have it.
Roku with RarFlix + Plex Media Server and the Unsupported Channel Store == More content then one human can watch. - If I were to recommend one device? It would have to be anything with XBMC like the OUYA.
Bad review, fast talking, little good information, jumping everywhere, IMO these guys seem more like fast talking salesmen rather than good reviewers...
Got a Roku 3 and it was worthless to my needs. Just wanted to run stuff off USB drive. Ugly ugly ugly looking. PLEX doesn't work either, need it to be portable as I have friends, so I'm not mounting it for my house only. Not good for my needs at all. Maybe a future Roku will be nice when I want the streaming stuff also, I just don't want that right now.
I have had the Roku 3 for four months. Now I have 5 of these boxes in my home- It's the box to use hands down

Don't you think a qwerty keyboard on the remote would be handy? Or maybe an app like smart glass for xbox is coming for it?

Do you know if the Roku3 runs the sling player channel like the other channels?
I read that you need to stream it from your iphone to the roku??

Can this device get rid of cable or do I have to have a cable subscription in order to watch tv? I am looking for a way to do this.
does it have high rgb issues like the wd tv live and how is the mkv support?
My question is, can you watch live tv like local channels?
WANT!

RUclips is now on roku. I got it. Best tv box ever!!!
P.S.: the guy on the right reminds me of Dwight from the office
U right he do look like Dwight F.T.O, 4real.lol :-)
can this device be used in Australia??
Any option other than "Twonky Beam" to stream my RUclips subscriptions to Roku?
I agree about it being fast but so is the Roku 2 XD with the new interface :)
Will it play LIVE RUclips streams?
Is it only wifi wireless or can it be used wired (safe from radiation)? Will it work in Europe?
u guys always have the best unbios review...love ur stuff..keep up the good work.....btw can i get a job?hehe
The Roku app for Android is excellent. It will also stream content saved on your phone to your TV. I image the iPhone app is similar.
Does it support Google Play content like movies and Music?
Are there subscriber fees ?
YES as in iPhone app for the remote and you can use Twonky Beam to beam RUclips and others to the Roku Player :)
such a great video - i wish i had this much fun at my job :-)
***** ROKU 3 beats pretty much everything else out there. I have tried them all, and nothing compares to the number of channels that the ROKU offers.

If/when they add an official RUclips channel I'm getting one.
can i connect my phone and tablet to roku wirelessly ?
I may be getting this if the next appletv doesnt support amazon instant video..

Nobody... you don't have to pay for online features on the PS4 (excluding multiplayer of course)
You stream youtube to your Roku via twonky.
But is not worth it if what you watch is mostly local content.
I need one!
At this time no google play access
Is there still no youtube channel?
Faster than my Xbox 360
This is amazing
thnx...

RUclips app is brilliant.
Why would you buy a Roku then? Its primary function is streaming.... :/
Got on my nerves, my god. Just review the thing already.
crunchyroll channel?
awesome
time to get some workout you mean!
Who ever needed an Xbox?
who needs an xbox one now.. not me.
Bad review, fast talking, little good information, jumping everywhere, IMO these guys seem more like fast talking salesmen rather than good reviewers...
So... Roku > Xbox One?
You know if you don't want a zillion boxes all over the place.
Answer after E3
unbiased
Take note apple
I hate shiny plastic remotes.
How does this have so many likes? Such hate for the One...

Finally a cheap thing that has Disney channel
Fanboy city on here. You know that. Of course, they will be grabbing it anyway.
Maybe you should try building a PC like a real man or woman
