  • Why do mantras 10 and 13 read almost identical? Repetition occurs when something is important enough to be repeated, to reinforce comprehension of the meaning and embed an idea deeply in listeners. The speaker of Isopanisad also uses repetition to underscore the importance of two parallel themes: knowledge and faith. There are consequences to mistaking avidya for vidya; just as there are consequences to substituting faith in the Absolute with faith in anything less. Mantras also employ repetition, to create a path to consciousness. Throughout history, the Bhakti poets have applied repetition like waves rushing onto the shore: madhuram madhuram madhuram sings Vallabhacharya, impressing upon listeners the exquisite irresistible sweetness of his beloved Lord Krishna.
