Pumpkin vs Red Wigglers 62-day time-lapse - FAST PLAYBACK - worm vermicomposting

- The bin's worm population was split; half of them remaining in the bin & the other half of the worms were loaded into the hollowed-out pumpkin. A bunch of shredded paper was loaded in after them to keep the worms up near the top of the pumpkin. The idea being that the pumpkin would be consumed not just from below but also from throughout its inside surface. It worked just as planned.. the worms made their way through the pumpkin quickly.
The top surface of the bid's contents were continuously being moved around - by the worms underneath the surface, and with the help of other helper critters in the bin such as the many pill bugs.

i love how there's a "versus" in the title as if the pumpkin had a fighting chance of victory
I think the pumpkin had the advantage. I've seen pumpkins decompose without worms, so this video is nothing more than just watching a pumpkin decay over 60 days.
Man vs car is a smashing success
I mean he had the high ground!
Damn I had 20 bucks on the pumpkin
They are still putting a VS in between Tyson Fury and Antony Joshua and Joshua stands as much chance as this pumpkin did.
This is why they tell you to never stand in the same spot in the woods for more than 10 days at a time

cant have shit in the bin
I'm amazed you could stand 2 months without getting in and digging around. Your willpower is incredible!
One of the very few things I did do - which was just out of view of the camera - is poke a couple vent holes into the back. It was becoming so smelly that I just wanted it to be eaten & dried up already.. I somehow thought that making a few punctures around back might help get it through its stinky phase more quickly. Haha The piercings were made on day-13 & a small flap from one of the piercings comes into view a week later on day-20
I also periodically (likewise, out of view of the camera) poked my fingertip gently down into the material to ensure that it wasn't drying out. To my surprise, the material retained its moisture just fine the entire time
Thank you for watching! ..oh, and thanks for recognizing the immense willpower it took to keep my grubby hands out of the bin ;)
Lol
@@A-V after eating the whole pumpkin was there a explosion in the number of red wigglers?

This was great! I remember, when I was young, watching the TV show and they had time lapse photography! They showed all sorts of things! One of my favorites was the seed, it sort of looked like a bean, coming up through earth, sprouting and growing! I've always loved this type of filmmaking. You did a wonderful job! Thank you!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it - your kind words are very much appreciated. Thank you for watching!
We have a worm bin, but I prefer to make pumpkin soup from the pumpkin. The worms can have the skin. The worms sure did make quick work of a lot of watermelon rind this summer.
I love watching these videos. It certainly puts a kink into the "everything has to be chopped up for the worms to eat it" crowd. Plus, it's really cool to watch. 😎
Wow that's amazing! I would not have thought a pumpkin would be broken down so quickly!
My dogs were going crazy - the music in this video made them IMMEDIATELY calm down!! I’m honestly shook haha
Do you clean their litter box after they poop?
Pure black gold.
Yes, and plant vegetable crops in it!
Worms produce the most fertile and valuable poo. Next would be rabbits.
The poop is the thing we want on worm bin 😂 they are not fed for nothing !
Yes but you have to have little tiny containers!

Thanks! That was a great show.
In Cincinnati?
Came to watch a pumpkin, left pondering life.
Amazing how quick the first 10 days went. Like a balloon deflating.
Everybody chillin until the pumpkin deflates like a balloon
What I thought was the most interesting was how lively the other surface matter is as the worms come to surface and shift things around ever so slightly. You don't notice it in normal speed. So that was really interesting to me.
Thank you for watching!
This reminds me of when my dog died when I was 10. It was a intense winter. We thought he ran away but a few months later after the snow melted.. we found him. The flys came first, then the maggots. I came every day to make sure all the worms were fed well. We all surrender to nature at some point. 🐕
Awesome video, love the time lapse!
Just set up our heated outdoor worm bins here in Texas
So cool! For the first 10 days it looks like the pimpkin is just sinking into the container!

it looked like the pumpkin deflated ROFL 😂😂 cool video though 👌
Lanelle Toscano so cool and so gross
This was a great video. I went over to a guys house once to get some rabbit manure. Under his cages were piles of manure and around the edges there were earth worms right under the soil. I think I got as many worms as I did rabbit manure. That was a great trip and my gardens really benefited 2 ways.
Sounds like some good shit...

Cool. Well made vid. When the seeds hatched, they got those too!
Hey my friend wants to know if this will work on a body, like ahhh he just wants to know.
Great vid! I fed the smallest jack o lantern pumpkin to my worm bin when I started it a couple of weeks ago and every seed germinated. I pulled up the sprouts and put them in the feed zone.
I had a small pumpkin too that I threw into one of my really active bins. A few weeks ago I had a number of sprouts that popped out & they too became worm food. In hindsight... I wonder how this video would have turned out if I had not removed the seeds from the pumpkin.
@@A-V wrong time of year for pumpkin, but maybe 2 butternut or acorn squash next bin turn over?
Actually.. I have a cantaloupe melon in the freezer which might be the subject on a similar upcoming time-lapse. The next one though must have some tweaks to improve the result.. such as: a) do the time-lapse in the dark using a flash camera, and b) enclose the environment to boost the ambient moisture levels throughout (ideally resulting in the worms making more appearances out in the open). Thanks for watching!
given the general persistence of pumpkins, how rapidly it collapsed in just the first few days was the most surprising part
Dang! Frickin worms, man! So satisfying to watch! 😆
Wow. Best time lapse!!
I love my vermicompost, I feed the worms well and they repay me with amazing soil.
Whenever I add new worms to my compost I tell them "you guys are going to love your life now!"
Very cool and surprisingly soothing
I noticed that worms seem to really love anything from the gourd family. They go crazy for that stuff
Fair play to the cameraman, I couldnt sit there for 62 days straight 👌
Do you really think he sat there for 62 days?
@@TheEthikos absolutely.
I think he may have left the camera there and did other things like shopping and laundry. Might need confirmation on this but I doubt he held the camera for 2 months solid
@@Englandsbestlover Nah he absolutely held the camera for 2 months straight. There's obviously no other way.
Slash Exactly 👌
That was awesome! ✌
Amazing video, know how well they work in our compost!
That-that-that-that-that.. That was honestly kinda terrifying and interesting at the same tine.
Just wondering how you did this without getting flies? In Australia it would be hard to not get maggots but would love to try this
To be honest I sorta expected to get some sort of pests while making this but maybe because it was winter I did not - luckily. Perhaps also because it was done in my basement - as opposed to outdoors where more bugs probably would've been attracted to it. Thanks for watching!
That was amazing and scary...all at the same time.
Me gusta ver estos videos, es curioso y me ha motivado a tener mi propia vermicompostera.
¡Gracias por ver!

Dude, I think I saw like 2 worms.
Amazing.
That's the one downside about this video.. as interesting as it is to se how quickly the worms ate the pumpkin, they stay out of view of the camera due to the bright overhead light. I wonder how this would've turned out if it had been filmed in a dark place with a flash. Anyhow - thanks for watching!

Ninja worms, man. You cant even see them, but the pumpkin just dissapears
I can hear the pumpkin screaming in terror....
How big of a plastic bin did you use? Like, the size of it? Great video!
They are those "bus bins", also known as "bus boxes", used by the bus boys when they come to clear the tables at the restaurant. I have some of the more shallow kind and I have a few of the deeper kind too. I think the deeper kind is best suited for vermicomposting. Thanks for watching!
I was just recommended this video, but in reverse. Lol.

Pottery kiln. Leaves no trace. 🤫
Gotta grind their bones into a fine powder and feed it back into your bin if you don't wanna get caught

My longest lasting Halloween tradition is carving a pumpkin and then letting it stay outside until it turns into dust.
This is amazing to see!
Imagine if one day the ground moves at this time frame but everything else is normal and any moment you could be hounded of your flesh by supersonic worms?... Just me then OK.
Sounds like an interesting movie concept (where the human species is extinct at the end of course)
