Stay in shape with Steve Gadd's flam exercises
Steve Gadd hosted a three hour evening listening to and answering questions all the way back in 2007. He let everybody in on many of his ideas on drums, his approach to music and opens up on many of his so-called drumming secrets. All not that secret because he loves to share it all. A thing that drummers gladly do. Watch this great video and read some cool background info on Steve and how he plays and explains many of the flam exercises he uses to stay in shape.

Love this guy....so relaxed...but articulate and precise as well.....not easy to do. His touch and feel on the instrument....rare... he is a legend.
sorry to be so off topic but does anybody know of a trick to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow forgot my password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@Reed Baylor instablaster ;)
@Angel Emmanuel Thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out now.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Angel Emmanuel It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much you saved my ass :D
@Reed Baylor glad I could help :)
Steve Gadd is one of the best.
I am self taught was never in drumline in school ( i played trumpet). I love drum corps and incorporate those rudiments into my practice and playing today 30 years later.
Steve has never left drumming in a drum corps snare line! I spent my youth in the early to mid 60's playing in drum corps including the snare line for the Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights of Newark, NJ taught by the legendary Mr. Bobby Thompson from whom Steve also took some instruction. I love watching Steve play his solos as he often includes pieces of those great drum corps solos in them that most drum corps drummers the same age as Steve and I would recognize in an instant and often can play them right along with him!! Mastering the rudiments is key to being able to travel around the kit with ease and confidence.
Awesome. Marty Hurley student here. Regiment 1989 age-out. always loved Steve Gadd's integration of rudiments from that idiom.
Thank you Steve Gadd
It is absolutely interesting to listen to Mr.Gadd in this demostration of flam rudiments, sometime practicing can become boring, but so with his help we lose enthusiasm again. It is truly a pleasure to listen to her while, thank again ,a greeting from Italy by Daniele.
This man IS music.
No one is smoother than Steve!
beautiful playing
Mr. Gadd reached me in 1978/79
! It never left me!
That was a killer groove there at the end.
Inspirational to me has a drummer and it goes to shows why the best players in the world know how to open up the rudiments to make it happen around the kit for grooves and solo's. And to me they are so important in your development has a drummer.
Thank you Dr Steve Gadd
A true master at work
Badass as usual!!!!
Listening to all those flam paradiddles, I cant help but start humming “Late In The Evening” in my head 😊
Thanks for the comment, Andrew! The video in which he plays and explains 'Late In The Evening' is coming soon!
drummerszone Awesome - a natural progression! 😉
He turns these rudiments into real music - like Philly, Roy, Buddy, Morello and others - but he (and possibly Cobham) had the deepest drum core roots.
I thought I could play drums and then I saw Steve Gadd play 😂
Gadd makes rudiments FEEL good.
Rudiments + Samba beat = Good Times
Thank you Steve good lesson.
The most decorated drummer over the last 50 years and will be remembered in 200 more years .
Steve Gadd has such extensive knowledge in flam rudiment.
His Army days took care if all that discipline Steve has!!!
brilliant
I totally get that and agree with the assertion. It’s tiring watching and digesting but sooo worth it. I love flams, now I love them even more. Some greats are just meant to teach. Look at his face, he loves it and eats it up………..gobbles.
Thanks...
Very nice Steve, hoping to get together after this virus.
Funciona ! Em tudo! Grande super mestre na bateria sou fã
I like how you said exercises because Steve Gadd doesn't practice. He just plays.
man i worked on these but forgot the 'make sure you play them as relaxed as possible' and now my hand hurts like hell. 🤦😄
FIRE
I exert more effort in watching him play it than he does in actually playing it.
Well put.
This is why spending time in a drum corps helps your playing as Steve, Cobham, Shrieve, McKinnon, and several other great drummers did.
Gadds drum corp style is evident in most everything he plays.
Reminds me of Marty Hurley flam exercises. Imagine 200 drummers playing this all at once and clean. :)
Sounds like music to me, but then again, it's Gadd.
Gadd ... "God" of drums!
Wanna know it how he does it?
Do it, practice and make up your own things!
It works !
And listen,... listen, and again, put that record on!
And that, my friends, is why Mr Gadd is just the most beautiful player on the planet
สุขภาพแข็งแรง รักษาสุขภาพครับ
Steve marched drum corps as well as Cobham.
Correct me if I'm wrong but is he calling the Pata Fla Fla a flamacue? I'm not with the rudiment police I assure you. Lol! but I believe he is. He sounds great as always.
paradidd
Is it not because he is alternating the flamacue between left and right?
SG♫♪ ♥
Fantastic stuff! Thank you Steve and drummerszone for this. I'll be doing flams in my training even more now. Young drummers can get expert advice from the masters at the touch of a button now, truly amazing! www.toneally.co.uk
He has elephantine muscle memory.
Great stuff , shame about the terrible sound!
Metronomes use Steve Gadd for timing...
Hey Steve, Brilliant Drummer you are, but you are playing in the moeller technique in which you failed to explain! Please explain to your legions of fans!
It's not really a moeller technique. He is using mostly wrist and not so much rebound here.
Bravissimo...ma non è una novità lo e sempre stato...
The greatest drummer on the worst sounding snare.
He must have a good chiropractor
Steve is holding out on drumtechnique. He is literally playing all moeller technique without explaining his grip!
If those are flams they are very open.
He marched in an east coast drum corps which is the style out there. Flams were always open
Thanks, didn't know.
21 deaf drummers do not like this..Because these basic flam rudiments are too much work for you dislikes Slackers!!!
This man cannot not swing.
Excuse me??????
He don't swing both ways like you
At Least Jim Chapin never under tought no one!
Most overrated drummer, he is just a average drummer
Darth Vader Explain why in your opinion. Then explain why he has drummed for the litany of great artists on record and as a touring drummer. Go
Darth Vader let's see your career 32 nd notes dont make a drummer great lots of tenique out there but no gifts.
Do you even know..what you're talking....even if you have 5 hands you will never be able to play like him....😂😂😂😂😂😂
He's slowed a lot but he's in his 70's. Calling him average is stupid. Gadd was the hottest drummer in the industry mid 70's to mid 80's. He has some of THE best drum tracks ever recorded to his name.
Are you a metal fan....
