Stay in shape with Steve Gadd's flam exercises
Steve Gadd hosted a three hour evening listening to and answering questions all the way back in 2007. He let everybody in on many of his ideas on drums, his approach to music and opens up on many of his so-called drumming secrets. All not that secret because he loves to share it all. A thing that drummers gladly do. Watch this great video and read some cool background info on Steve and how he plays and explains many of the flam exercises he uses to stay in shape.

I am self taught was never in drumline in school ( i played trumpet). I love drum corps and incorporate those rudiments into my practice and playing today 30 years later.

Steve has never left drumming in a drum corps snare line! I spent my youth in the early to mid 60's playing in drum corps including the snare line for the Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights of Newark, NJ taught by the legendary Mr. Bobby Thompson from whom Steve also took some instruction. I love watching Steve play his solos as he often includes pieces of those great drum corps solos in them that most drum corps drummers the same age as Steve and I would recognize in an instant and often can play them right along with him!! Mastering the rudiments is key to being able to travel around the kit with ease and confidence.

Awesome. Marty Hurley student here. Regiment 1989 age-out. always loved Steve Gadd's integration of rudiments from that idiom.

It is absolutely interesting to listen to Mr.Gadd in this demostration of flam rudiments, sometime practicing can become boring, but so with his help we lose enthusiasm again. It is truly a pleasure to listen to her while, thank again ,a greeting from Italy by Daniele.

Inspirational to me has a drummer and it goes to shows why the best players in the world know how to open up the rudiments to make it happen around the kit for grooves and solo's. And to me they are so important in your development has a drummer.
    Thank you Dr Steve Gadd

He turns these rudiments into real music - like Philly, Roy, Buddy, Morello and others - but he (and possibly Cobham) had the deepest drum core roots.

Is it not because he is alternating the flamacue between left and right?

    • @stretch54

It's not really a moeller technique. He is using mostly wrist and not so much rebound here.
