Golfer Lexi Thompson ended up losing a tournament after a TV viewer reported a violation of the rules, which officials apparently missed. An eagle-eyed viewer reported in an email that the 22-year-old golfer's placement of the ball was wrong. The viewer saw Thompson marking the position of the ball then picking it up. Video shows that when she puts it back, it's an inch closer to the hole. Upon hearing the mistake was going to cost her four strokes, Thompson replied, "Is this a joke?" #InsideEdition

It is breaking the rules. You can’t just decide, hey I’m going to put my ball here and not there. It’s a penalty. That’s why the rule is there to enforce it. Did she intentionally cheat? Maybe not . But it’s a rule , she broke the rule. Chella Choi did the same thing. Got called out, and quit a tournament for it. Then owned up to it after.

iifymbro there is a rule though
You can’t place your ball in a different spot. Did she cheat? Intentionally? Maybe not , but you can’t just put it wherever. That’s why there is a rule for it. Chella Choi did it, quit a tournament for getting called out for it, then after the fact decided to own up to it.
Lexi or Alexis or alexi or lexis, whatever she changes her name to, she has a history of it, she has repeatedly broke the rule. 2 times she has been called out on it. Both times she cried and complained. She has admitted that , in her words, she can bend the rules because of being Lexi Thompson..
so if I drive 90 in a 20 speed limit, I will just say my name to avoid a traffic ticket... Lexi did this, still got the ticket. Oh well

In my opinion, Lexi cheated and got caught. End of story. I'm glad she didn't win. She received the correct penalty, 4 strokes, according to the rules. Through the years I have seen many people cheat that way, even pros. Golf is a game that must be played by the rules, no exception. Anyone who disagrees with me, must be a cheater too. As far as a TV viewer emailing in the infraction, that makes no difference. He did the right thing, pointing out her cheating, protecting the field. I'm sure one of her playing partners saw the infraction, and didn't say anything. That was incorrect, and not protecting the field.

I wonder how many other times that Thompson has "inched" the ball closer to the hole when replacing the ball after marking it. This is not something that is done by "accident" because usually the edge of the coin is located near the tangent where the ball contacts the green, not perpendicular to the edge of the ball looking downward. The fan was right in calling about the infraction, and it was up to the officials to decide the consequence of his finding, so Tiger is wrong about the comment.

She got caught cheating. Simple as that. She knew what she was doing. The officials SHOULD have been watching that. For a viewer to pick it up at home and not the officials is a failure on the part of the officials. Every time a golfer handles a ball, there is always an official present. It's the same in billiards. An official watches the player closely to see if they bump any balls on the table.

I like Lexi Thompson but her infraction was completely INTENTIONAL. If you look at it closely, the ball came to a stop in a SMALL DEPRESSION. You can tell it by the slight height change of the ball when after she replaced it. She could've marked her ball and fixed it IF she was allowed to do it under the rules but she just went ahead and placed it away from the depression. That's cheating. 4 stroke seemed harsh and I feel for her but she deserved it and IT WAS BY THE RULE.

You pick up the ball and put it down in a different spot within the same motion. There is NO WAY a pro golfer does this by accident. I do not for one moment believer her when she says she didn't mean to do it. She plays golf every day. She knows how to correctly mark the ball on a green.

    • @movieguy992
      @movieguy992 7 лет назад +5

She did place the ball in front of the marker the issue is that she moved the marker to the left instead of directly behind the ball. She didn't move the ball closer like this video says. She moved it to the side probably to avoid a mark on the green. Yes it is a good call after i looked at it a few times I agree. I golf too. The bigger issue is letting fans call in and then changing the call the next day or later in the round. Golf needs to be like every other sport and either make the call right away by an official or let it slide. And I don't care if you don't like Leveon Bell...I'm not even a Steelers fan just an example.

So someone tells you something is wrong, you go back and look at it, and they were right, you would propose we do nothing because a viewer caught the mistake first? Great logic.

chels x if there was a spike mark in front of the ball an inch would make a difference. I don't believe this was the case. Just sloppy replacement of the ball by Lexi. However fans calling in to make the call should not be allowed.

    This
type of event (deliberately mis-placing a ball to avoid a spike mark)
can be avoided by the introduction of a 'standardised' ball marker that
MUST be used by ALL players, incorporating a semi-circle indent at the
end that must surround the ball when the ball is marked - replacement
'outwith' this semi-circle will be easily observed and quite obviously
discourage 'forgetting' where the ball was! I have today submitted a
representation to the R+A to have this issue addressed and included in
the 2019 rule change process. BTW - golfers KNOW EXACTLY where they have
placed the ball, AND they KNOW it is WRONG. The establishment have
chosen to call it 'careless/not intentional' for the sake of numerous
reputations (I think Elliott Saltman may have something to say about
that!), however, what is clear is that the 'process' of 'marking a ball'
has to be better regulated to avoid such 'errors'. The TV viewer ref.
issue will also be changed eventually, but the most important issue is
stopping the actions of players who appear to 'forget' the basics -
standardising the marker will stop this!

  • @wreckim

You can't remark your ball IMMEDIATELY and change the position. There was no real advantage there, but the immediacy of her replacement clearly showed that the position had changed, and she should have been VERY careful about that. When you mark the ball, and then others putt, you can simply replace your ball pretty much in front of your coin etc...and nobody cares. Trevino joked that if you let him remark his ball a few times, his 3 foot putt, would become a 2 footer.

I have seen many great catches in College Football but Because one of there feet was a tenth of an inch outside it cost the team a touchdown...And in some occasions when the team is on the goal line a tenth of an inch could decide wether that ball crossed the plain....And in College Basketball a quarter of an inch could decide wether it was a two or Three pointer and that has decided many games in the past. She was penalized and it was the right thing to do. Golf like Hoops & Football is a game of inches..

  • @robertm7889

If she didn't notice or know she did it when it looks this obvious...by inference she must do it all the time by reflex and just got caught. Lucky she wasn't disqualified.
Robert Di Vincenzo lost a chance to be in a playoff in the 1968 Masters because he signed an incorrect scorecard not because he cheated but because he gave himself a par on a hole he birdied.
Hale Irwin calling a whiff (no one saw or knew about) on himself and losing the British Open by one stroke.
Those were heartbreaking applications of the very strict rules of golf at a professional level.
This wasn't. She cheated and got caught.

  • @tomgates316

I absolutely don’t condone what she did, moving the ball. Accident or not.
If it’s missed by the tournament judges on the course and she ends the day with a signed, validated scorecard, then judges missed it and that card should be left as is.
For the viewer complaint, judges should then be keenly aware to watch for that ball movement the remainder of the tournament. If done again, the player is penalized at that point.
Football, baseball, basketball, hockey, etc - they don’t change the score of the game, or impose penalties afterwards. People call MLB, NFL, NHL, etc all the time to complain a referee completely blew some call. It’s a human game judged or ref’d by humans that can make mistakes and miss something.
The viewer calls should only be allowed to raise awareness, but never change the outcome of a finished round or completed game. The course judges missed it. But the next round they could certainly say “we’ll be watching you closely “.

Somebody asked below the same question I am asking. For those of you who know golf, please respond. Why in the world did she mark her ball, pick if up slightly, and then put it down again? Clearly she was going to putt the ball, so why did she pick it up in the first place? Did she have to mark the ball prior to putting? If she had to mark the ball, did she have to pick the ball up?

Officials should be with each golf group. That way golf would be like ALL THE OTHER SPORTS AND HAS OFFICIALS, NOT SPECTATORS OFFICIATING THE TOURNAMENTS!! ! Could you imagine a critical play in basketball or football game where the fan 20 rows back says, that was a foul or a penalty and the game stops and the fan comes in and makes the call based on their camera footage? Golf needs to get into the alignment with the rest of sports and have officials make calls on the spot so a player knows where they stand with their score at the instant in time, not the next day!

The reason everyone is mad at the guy watching at home is funny. Golf is the only sport were you call your own penalties. No other sport does this. She had to of known she moved the ball. She sets up to ball with putter like she is going to putt, then decides to marks the ball, picks it up about 2 inches moves her hand toward her body then sets the ball down. She does not even try to line up any part of the ball to the hole just picks it up and moves it. strange. She never did this move on any other hole in the tournament.
Just like football you have the guy sitting on the couch making the call on the close play. i think baseball is talking about doing something also. At least golf does not have to pay there TV referee caller official
