WHO ARE M-23 REBELS?

M23 is a rebel group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), formed in April 2012. It is composed mainly of former fighters from the National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP), which was disbanded following a peace agreement. The group's name, M23, refers to the March 23, 2009, peace agreement between the DRC government and the CNDP. M23's formation was driven by grievances over unfulfilled aspects of this agreement, including issues related to political and military integration. The group has sought to address these grievances through armed rebellion, causing significant instability and conflict in eastern DRC.
